Not been able to keep up with the thread but congrats to OrangeCinnamon's daughter. Getting a job in this pandemic is a feat.

Not sure how I feel about schools opening March 8th ,as has been leaked. I really hope they do it in stages with secondary later. Or have proper precautions in school. Before schools closed DS had to go into isolation twice, so wasn't v happy at all with the social distancing.

Monkey2001 · 22/02/2021 08:58

Indeed, I was not expecting to hear that schools will be open to all pupils 8th March, teachers will be rightly concerned, but most of our DC will be delighted. Hope Boris announces a change in vaccine policy, although it should have been done 2 weeks before they went back.

Frequentflier · 22/02/2021 09:05

May I ask perhaps a stupid question? DH who is vulnerable got his vaccine on Friday ( and v grateful we are too). Looks like schools will open a few days before his immunity kicks in. Would it be ok for me to ask to keep DS at home for that week?

crazycrofter · 22/02/2021 09:46

@frequentflier, is your ds at an independent school? If so, I've found they're much more understanding and flexible about time off in normal times, so hopefully they'll be reasonable now.

@orangecinnamon well done to your dd!

piggywaspushed · 22/02/2021 09:52

My school would be fine with that, too.

My DH is escalatingly anxious.

Leaks to press at 11pm don't help anyone!

Frequentflier · 22/02/2021 09:56

Yes, he is at an independent school and we are in London, so he takes the tube. Maybe I am obsessing too much about the 3 week immunity thing. After a year of thinking about this, am no longer sure of my own judgement. i myself will likely get the vaccine only in July as I have no conditions and am under 50 ( just!)

Feel for the teachers.

Fferny1 · 22/02/2021 10:13

Just checking back.into this thread under a name change.
Congrats. to your dd @Orangecinnamon.
I am desperately hoping my 3 will be back in school in 2 weeks and the news being leaked is correct.

AndwhenyougetthereFoffsomemore · 22/02/2021 10:46

Congrats on the job @orangecinnamon's dd: sarni-tastic! I am trying to persuade ds to apply for jobs at a few of our local summer attractions: very seasonal but (hopefully/maybe??) a bit easier to access!

I'm half excited half nervous about the school news: the dc are SO ready to be back at school but I really feel frustrated that teachers haven't been prioritised for vaccination: it feels such a no-brainer to get them jabbed (even as drop in/mop ups at the end of day, as was done with local police force). @Frequentflier: I would certainly ask school if you can delay a few days - I would have thought most schools would be understanding in that situation.

icanbewhatiwant · 22/02/2021 11:03

Yes news is correct as the vaccine minister said this morn they will all go back 8th. He also said 4 weeks later we will be able to meet up to 6 outside again.

Dh getting his vaccine this week. So he won't have the better immunity in time. But they went to school in December when cases were much higher, plus I'm sure they aren't going to catch it on day 1 and bring it home. So I'll try not to think about it. Mine only go on the bus with other school children though. Not public transport though.

Yes...be great to get teachers done. But I think they are going to continue in age order instead.

Wheresthebeach · 22/02/2021 11:05

I'd much prefer a staggered start back.

Really hate how everything is leaked so comprehensively to the press.

Zandathepanda · 22/02/2021 11:14

Dd got her jab on Friday. We’ll probably be delaying too. No doubt there will be bodged stats tonight about vaccines and Whitty looking down like Fauci did when Trump started going on about bleach.

Dd’s hoodied-up (pj underneath) and ‘teaming’ now. For the sake of 20 days in school it seems crazy to have everyone back at the same time. Our ‘known’ local rate is one in 300 so I would have thought it would be reasonable to expect that the school would have 6 cases doing lateral flow tests of the first day of students/teachers. If the tests work. If a student tests positive does the siblings/bus mate have to isolate or is it just let them come in and swab til they’re positive?
Meanwhile Uni Dd is furious that Universities aren’t ‘back’ until April.

Wheresthebeach · 22/02/2021 11:20

Its the never ending rounds of self isolation that are the problem.

I think its much more disruptive.

orangecinnamon · 22/02/2021 11:39

That seems like such a waste @Zandathepanda what I remember from doing undergrad administration at our place was April to May was self supervised study so no timetabled sessions anyway. Although could be different nowadays!

icanbewhatiwant · 22/02/2021 11:52

@Wheresthebeach thankfully we didn't have any self isolation. That's must be a nightmare. We are now about 40 cases per 100,000. So much lower. But just over the border in Norfolk they have found the South African variant. So lots being tested. So many people came forward the sites ran out of tests on day one.
Hopefully they won't find many more. But I'm sure it'll pop up most places.

piggywaspushed · 22/02/2021 12:23

DS having a meltdown because his fixed laptop won't let him on Show My Homework and is saving everything in an obscure part of OneDrive with a weird password. Computers. Grr.

Wheresthebeach · 22/02/2021 13:07

Oh what a pain Piggy. It really does add to the stress.

This is why DD won't use a laptop for exams, she'd rather write (at glacial speed) than risk it being lost or saved somewhere odd.

DSS had the school lose his memory stick when he did GCSE's. It was a stressful couple of weeks until they found it!

Fferny1 · 22/02/2021 13:32

@Zandathepanda Dd1_in Bristol was told last summer that all lectures would be online this year. Did not all unis make the same decision?
It is difficult on dds Vet course with very few practical sessions. They've resorted to doing online demos of them examining their stuffed toys😄

Monkey2001 · 22/02/2021 13:37

@Fferny1 I think all universities are doing lectures on line this year, but there has been a lot of variation in face-to-face content for tutorials and other non-lecture based teaching.

Zandathepanda · 22/02/2021 13:44

Yes I think it’s more of the fact the Uni told them not to come back. She’s paying for 2nd yr private accommodation plus WiFi, water, elec, gas in her flat. Flatmates have gone back as their courses are on a ‘list’ that are allowed.
She’s annoyed schools are going back but technically she’s not supposed to.

Monkey2001 · 22/02/2021 14:31

@Zandathepanda it is a mess! People going by the letter of the law are not going back, but loads have gone back. I know a first year at Bristol doing French and Politics who comes from a very large house with good internet etc who came back because she wanted to, and the halls are allowing them. Another friend who only lives a few miles from his hall is still at home (although he wants to go back) because that is what the rules said.

piggywaspushed · 22/02/2021 15:49

DS1 went back. We pay his rent and everyone else in his house does healthcare type courses so they were all there.

He is bored there. Bored rigid. But at least not fighting with DH!

FoolsAssassin · 22/02/2021 16:29

DD is at university. She lives there now and only comes home for visits.

Decorhate · 22/02/2021 16:46

Most of my older son’s friends from home & other youngsters we know here have gone back. Most of his housemates have not gone back yet so he was not too bothered but we are taking him back next weekend as they will all have returned by then. I know it’s not technically allowed so hopefully we won’t get stopped on the way!

Frequentflier · 22/02/2021 16:50

So all kids back by March 8th, as leaked. DS is thrilled. But he currently looks like "It" from The Addams Family, as he hasn't allowed us to cut his hair.
