Bit balmier!!

Zandathepanda · 15/02/2021 13:01

Piggy thank you just waving back - apologies to everyone else but another (barmy not balmy) thread we were both on is full!Grin

FoolsAssassin · 15/02/2021 13:09

I think with things how they are, posts like yours Monkey are so helpful. What a stunning place!

DD is at Cardiff. The private accommodation is cheap and she doesn’t have travel costs usually . I think she feels these factors have both contributed positively to her time there and been a help to us as we weren’t expecting her to go to university.

Zandathepanda · 15/02/2021 13:10

Also overheard Uni Dd/Year 12 Dd having a heart-to-heart about how to manage university with her condition and not defer. I am going to need nerves of steel for that. But panic aside, she really likes York! So let’s just get all our DCs there and we can wear an distinctive lapel badge as a secret identifying code!

Monkey2001 · 15/02/2021 13:11

@Seeline Swansea very popular in DS's school, they send somebody to talk to them in normal years. They offer an incentive (or bribe) to people with AAA (I think) or better. I know several students there, all seem to love it, accommodation nice and cheap, beach after exams.

Piggywaspushed · 15/02/2021 13:15

When I see pics of St Andrews, I think of lovely Chariots of Fire. I rewatched it the other day thinking it would be dated. It is still a really good film, happy to report.

The other interesting thing about St Andrew's is that it has the most famous golf course in the world and you can literally wander around it.

Nard75 · 15/02/2021 13:22

DS had a call from Doctors this morning to book Co-Vid vaccine. We queried that he is only 17 with no health conditions but she was adamant that he was on the list. Managed to get it sorted I phoned the doctors again and the doctor checked his records and said he shouldn’t have been called. A bit worrying that they are calling people who they shouldn’t be. I thought vaccines were only suitable for over 18’s unless clinically vulnerable.

Piggywaspushed · 15/02/2021 13:24

Goodness!

Monkey2001 · 15/02/2021 13:32

Oh dear @Nard75! A friend of mine was surprised to be called in, she is an ex-nurse who was on an immunosuppressant but no longer is, so thinks it was a mistake.

Fiddlersgreen · 15/02/2021 13:51

I think the Pfizer vaccine is for over 16s but no he shouldn’t have been called yet if no underlying conditions!

AndwhenyougetthereFoffsomemore · 15/02/2021 13:52

Wow, @Monkey2001: thanks SO much, that's incredibly helpful! Ds would be comp sci, and one of the appealing things about St A would be the option to continue with his psychology alongside that: it's not exactly a bog standard pairing!
He's autistic ('high functioning' for want of a clearer terminology: manages fine in mainstream schooling, but prone to anxiety/not a typical teen) so a small, friendly environment and no clubbing suits him down to the ground! I won't bother you with more questions for now, but as and when he has done a better job of really narrowing things down, I may come back to you: thanks so much :-)

AndwhenyougetthereFoffsomemore · 15/02/2021 13:53

@Nard75: how weird! Does he have a common name ( not that that makes it better!)

teta · 15/02/2021 13:58

@monkey St Andrews looks absolutely idyllic. I wish I could persuade one of mine to go there. Definitely not dd as she wants to be in the metropolis.

Ds wants to do Sports Science, so one of the Welsh unis would be ideal.Though he hasn't identified which ones he's interested in yet. They've only just started to do careers talks at his school and he's barely even thought about it.
Monkey2001 · 15/02/2021 14:07

@teta we were looking at Sports Science. Loughborough is the place everyone seems to think of for Sports Science. DS was keen on Edinburgh where one of the interesting things is that because of the 4 year structure, in the first year the Sports Science element is only 1/3 of a timetable, so he could do it alongside Engineering (or anything else) for the first year. In general Scottish courses are brilliant if they want to start broadly, but of course your DS may want 100% sports science in the first year.

Nard75 · 15/02/2021 14:07

@AndwhenyougetthereFoffsomemore: not common at all!!

AndwhenyougetthereFoffsomemore · 15/02/2021 14:20

@Nard75: even weirder! Glad you managed to get things sorted, anyway. I bet there was some head-scratching in your household this morning! Hard for dc to deal with that sort of 'officialdom' too, although a good learning experience I'm sure!

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 15/02/2021 16:39

St As looks beautiful Monkey.

For those without DCs at uni already, are you itching to go and see these places? An online prospectus just doesn't really do it, you need to get a feel for the place.

I am so glad half term is here, I have my office back and have actually been super productive today compared to the last few weeks of refereeing the two boys.

ProggyMat · 15/02/2021 17:53

@Monkey2001 your St A photos are rubbing salt into my wounds! I’ve given up on trying to nudge DD to at least consider it given how beautiful it is and most importantly where it’s ranked for her chosen degree.
She’s now discounted another from her list of 4 - Warwick Hmm
The three remaining are: ‘I’ll have a punt at Oxford’, UCL and Exeter.

We have booked a remote cottage (with a hot tub yippee) for a week in July in Wales on the way back hope to just walk around Cardiff Civic centre at least . MIL will be with us and she will love the Hepworth outside the music building. Hope we manage to get there. Notts and Brum will be done same weekend (my sister in Loughborough). Southampton near enough to be done on own. I work in a really small uni so it is great to see all the bells and whistles larger institutions have. Visited Southampton for a meeting once and was so impressed with their fruit and veg market for students!

That’s a great plan @orangecinnamon, DS keen on Notts but I really want to have a look around with him. Maybe when we’re out of this lockdown we can just drive up and have a nose around the town like you say. DS has been to Brum lots for the T20 finals 😀 so he’s got a bit of a feel for the city and Edgbaston. DH and I both studied in Brum many many many years ago!

orangecinnamon · 15/02/2021 18:58

Not sure what happened with my full stops in that post Blush
@justherewithmypopcorn some unis have self guided walking tour maps on their websites.

It would be nice to combine tours with events e.g Christmas Market or Goose Fair but not sure that would happen this year. If it did then surely, they'll be doing open days anyhow!

crazycrofter · 15/02/2021 18:59

I’m itching to go on some day trips to university towns too @JustHereWithMyPopcorn. I think I’m just itching to be somewhere more than five miles from home anyway though!

I suspect Dd would rather go with friends than with me. But if rules are relaxed I’d happily drive her and a friend to a few cities around the country.

Piggywaspushed · 15/02/2021 19:19

Good news! DS's laptop back with PC World and fixed. Not so good news : hard drive replaced so I think this means we will have to buy bloody software again... we had 'lifetime' Office. Gah.

Piggywaspushed · 15/02/2021 19:20

Just my DS also a cricket fan! I think he would like a uni near a cricket or football. Minor teams fine with him for football.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 15/02/2021 20:37

Ooh walking tours sound interesting although it’s quite nice to find you way around just winging it too, maybe a bit of mix and match.

@crazycrofter I suspect my itchiness might have a bit of lockdown lean as well! Combining both things is a good solution!

@Piggywaspushed does your DS play? DS has missed the school senior tour because of Covid, it’s all been cancelled and they normally go to some fantastic cricketing countries - he’s been working towards selection since Yr 7 - so guttingly disappointed.

Good news on the laptop (not the cost though) can you get your subscription transferred from before? Worth a shot.
