Alternative arrangements will be made.

How stressful to announce that with no details about what will happen.

You really think that was the time or the place to lay those plans out?

Pieceofpurplesky · 04/01/2021 20:15

I guess my live zoom will be quite quiet tomorrow then!

Barkleyspaubles · 04/01/2021 20:15

I have a Teams lesson tomorrow with all of Y11. How many will pitch up now I wonder! Hmm

pointythings · 04/01/2021 20:15

It's going to be another last minute cock-up again. I have a DD in Yr13 and I'm anxious.

noblegiraffe · 04/01/2021 20:16

There are exams this week, so there should be info signposted.

Yes what will happen? I know BTEC Music is this week. They weren't great last year!

pointythings · 04/01/2021 20:18

@Blessex

Yes, because contingency plans should have been made in the summer in preparation for this eventuality. The government were told Test and Trace was not performing properly. They were told a second wave was pretty much inevitable. They should absolutely have been ready for this, they were not and this is entirely their fault. Stop being a government apologist.
Pipandmum · 04/01/2021 20:19

My y11 daughter and her friends are devastated. But they will have ongoing assessments so they can't slack off! Especially the subjects that they will do at A level or at uni.

Barkleyspaubles · 04/01/2021 20:20

A Levels really should go ahead if at all possible in my view.

Zandathepanda · 04/01/2021 20:21

So sorry for all the school staff that have had the first half of the holidays ruined by being a track and trace service delivering news to families they have to isolate over Christmas, then the second half ruined by trying to set up a (now defunct) volunteer swab service.

Poor Yr11 and 13 in England too.

Chasingsquirrels · 04/01/2021 20:22

It is presumably going to be even harder than last year, as at least then the courses were all but complete, mocks had been taken etc.
This time they've missed 1/2 of last year in school, been potentially impacted by SI periods last term, and back to remote learning now. Many won't have taken mocks (my yr13 son's were planned for next week).
There is presumably much less data to go on than last year.

noblegiraffe · 04/01/2021 20:22

I hope they don’t ask for CAGs. We don’t have the data we did last time.

And Y11 and 13 can’t be set adrift from now. It was bad enough from the end of March.

It's ridiculous to cancel exams at this stage. Teacher assessments aren't going to be any fairer and some year 11 pupils won't have done an exam since year 9.

fizzingbubbleseffervescence · 04/01/2021 20:24

He said some exams for some pupils. What the hell does that mean? A levels but not GCSEs? English & maths but not others?? I hate this uncertainty

UncomfortableSilence · 04/01/2021 20:25

How can they accurately assess this cohort? They missed half of Y10, DD was isolating more than she was in last term, mocks got moved and squeezed in just before Christmas due to isolations and many missed them.

This is a real worry, DD has stormed off to her room and I don't blame her what an absolute shit show.

noblegiraffe · 04/01/2021 20:28

“We recognise that this will mean that it’s not possible or fair for all exams to go ahead this summer as normal. The education secretary will work with Ofqual to put in place alternative arrangements”

Not all exams as normal. Could mean anything.

That was so fucking vague. 'Some exams will have to be cancelled.'

noblegiraffe · 04/01/2021 20:31

Sky News saying Jan exams will go ahead.

They did it last year. They didn't need to talk details tonight. It will be ok.

noblegiraffe · 04/01/2021 20:33

There weren’t kids with exams the next day last March, Oblomov

AmIAWeed · 04/01/2021 20:35

Not knowing was the worst part of last year. My son knew he screwed up his mocks and worked his butt off in between...which then didn't matter come March.
The uncertainty, the wait is all hideous and unfair and should not be repeated.
I feel for all year 11 and 13 students - I hope they give them some answers quickly

sadpapercourtesan · 04/01/2021 20:36

I am angry at how vague the reference to exams was. I have a Y12 and a Y13 and they need to know what the hell they are doing, ffs. The uncertainty is toxic Sad

noblegiraffe · 04/01/2021 20:37

It will be ok.

It had better be a lot better than last year!

The longer we wait for info, the more likely it is we lose Y11 and 13 (Y11 in particular) and can’t get them back.

Goodbye2020Hello2021 · 04/01/2021 20:40

Teaching just stopped for Year11/13 last year... SURELY this year they will continue with their courses.

The tabloids will stupidly report 'Exams scrapped' and 1000s of students will switch off.

CrypticQueen · 04/01/2021 20:42

But it didn’t work out well last (school) year! Kids missed their first choice universities, massive grade inflation so results are not comparable year in year ... It’d be nice to think the government has been planning for this all summer ...you know, how to make remote learning and assessment equitable. But I’m not holding my breath.
