We just want our kids in school. Please. If at all possible.

And driving lessons. And good Mental Health. And happiness.

In-and-amongst all this Covid nightmare and lockdown debacle.

Someone on here recommended a good app. for the theory driving test. Can someone please remind me again. Ds son might as well get onto that over the break from school. He's bound to say he's got too much work when he returns to school. I booked the theory test for feb half term. Though of course it could be cancelled.

Piggyinblankets · 20/12/2020 16:21

Another case at DS's sixth form. Three since Friday Shock

ealingwestmum · 20/12/2020 17:43

DD uses Theory 4 in 1 app @icanbewhatiwant. Tests proceed in Tiers 1 to 3, but cancelled in Tier 4. Nor can you attend if you are travelling from Tier 4 to a centre in lower tiers. DD’s was scheduled for tomorrow. Pushed back again...

estherfrewen · 20/12/2020 18:26

DS uses 4 in 1 app too. That’s a shame for your DD @ealingwestmum. DS has theory test booked for Feb. Tier 2 at the moment...

icanbewhatiwant · 20/12/2020 19:53

@ealingwestmum thanks very much. Yes that was it. That is annoying about cancellations. We are currently tier 2. I can see us going into tier 3 next time or we might all go into full lockdown.

KingscoteStaff · 20/12/2020 22:35

4 in 1 got DD through her test. She drove us all to Sainsbury's today and even backed into a space! (admittedly with no cars either side, but still!)

Monkey2001 · 21/12/2020 06:16

Is 4 in 1 the DVSA app? DS1 used DVSA and all the questions in the test were from the same question bank as was one of the hazard perception clips.

My big tip is on Hazard Perception - always click twice. DS1 failed first time because although the first section was fine, he clicked to early in a couple of the hazard perception clips and got no points for those. Stupid but true that you need strategy for being too perceptive! Click when you see it and then one or two more clicks, the test scores the first click in the window as long as you are not continuously clicking.

KingscoteStaff · 21/12/2020 08:18

Oooh yes, and watch out for the clip with 2 hazards - DD lost points on that, but isn’t sure why?

icanbewhatiwant · 21/12/2020 09:17

I know someone who clicked twice on hazard perception and failed. They said he should only press once. So not sure if that's something new (he took his a 3 years ago)
Ds1 said hazard perception is the hardest part. He got 49/50 on the multiple choice. Apparently realised which one he'd got wrong as soon as he chose his answer.

Monkey2001 · 22/12/2020 14:12

Negative test, but I am glad I got it done as I have a terrible cough so it is good to be able to reassure people I see!

AnneOfCleavage · 22/12/2020 14:52

That's good Monkey although sorry you have an awful cough. So much going around that's not Covid as nephew also had one and a temp but had negative test too.

Still no GCSE certs or any report given.

DD has finished her antibiotics and is much improved now so I'm v relieved. She's Christmas shopping with DH so feels much better. Her school have said to have a good rest this holiday but she still wants to do some notes and stay ahead of the game.

Wet and windy here so I'm staying put. Need to get our veg / salad bits so may go tonight as shops rather busy now. Mil said in Waitrose she couldn't get carrots, sprouts, lettuce or cucumber so that's weird as opposite the greengrocer had lots the day before when I drove past.

Monkey2001 · 22/12/2020 16:00

Glad to hear DD feeling better @AnneOfCleavage. Loads of sprouts and carrots in our local Aldi and only 14p a bag! As I will be the only one eating them here, I am having 10 a day and they will probably last until new year!

icanbewhatiwant · 22/12/2020 17:53

That's good it was negative @Monkey2001

Almost every year around Christmas/January DH gets a cold...then a chest infection. He always has a good 6 weeks of antibiotics, then steroids. Then ends up having chest X-rays he is usually coughing still as we go into March. I wonder if the lack of meeting people will stop him getting a cold this year. He never catches one from the dc's. Though they don't get many colds now they are older. If he gets one of his coughs he usually has 3 or 4 trips to gp for more antibiotics...I can see us all being told to isolate each time while he gets a covid test.

Piggyinblankets · 22/12/2020 19:12

TWELVE cases at DS's school since Friday....!

Madness.

I hate to say it but the shit is going to hit the fan about this so called mass testing too. I have proper jitters about the whole thing. Sorry Sad

ExpensivelyDecorated · 22/12/2020 19:17

I'm uneasy about the mass testing too, the logistics, the need to bring lots of volunteers on site when visitors have been banned all year, the high false negative rate, the prospect of having to get hundreds of teens to swab their own nose and throat properly.

Piggyinblankets · 22/12/2020 19:21

I am not inclined to consent but that doesn't solve the issue of lots of kids being in schol with my DS off the back of highly unreliable negative tests. Only in schools are these tests being used instead of self isolation.

I think it will go tits up in the next few days, and that's not a good thought.

crazycrofter · 22/12/2020 21:46

We have covid in the house now. Dd and ds started with it at the weekend, dh and I yesterday. This is not going to be a fun Christmas!

ExpensivelyDecorated · 22/12/2020 22:02

Oh no Crazy - how badly are you all being affected by it?

Monkey2001 · 22/12/2020 22:17

Sorry to hear that @crazycrofter. I hope you all have mild versions. Have you managed to get all your shopping done? Sounds like a Christmas of sleeping and board games may be called for.

I am also expecting much tougher restrictions soon, think it will be more like the initial lock down and schools may be all on line for January. At least the end is on sight did to the vaccine. Flowers

ExpensivelyDecorated · 22/12/2020 22:23

We are in tier 2, in the SE, close to several T4 areas, we reckon by the weekend we'll be joining them. If not sooner.

FoolsAssassin · 22/12/2020 22:50

So sorry to hear that CrazyCrofter really hope you are doing ok.
Very good news about DD AnneofCleavage

Quite a few cases the last few days in DS’s old school, more all the numbers for the term until then put together.

Text from from driving instructor finally but DS not up for starting at the moment. Not sure how much longer they will be able to continue lessons as things stand.

KingscoteStaff · 23/12/2020 06:03

So sorry CrazyCrofter - what a complete pain for you.

Driving lessons cancelled here in Tier 4. DD is practising by driving me around a very empty London to drop off presents!

sandybayley · 23/12/2020 09:19

Sorry to hear that @crazycrofter - with us it took a few days to feel really rough and it went on longer than we hoped ☹️ Please do take it easy and surrender to the sofa.

@KingscoteStaff DD is going on the insurance temporarily as a Christmas present so let's try and avoid (literally) bumping into each other. Can you stay out of SW19 and SW20 please?

Seeline · 23/12/2020 09:29

Sorry to hear of more poorly people - hope you are on the mend soon.

DD broke up on the 11th, but haven't heard anything from school so assume that her year at least escaped the end-of-year rush despite being in Tier 4. It's weird not being able to shop for the last minute bits and pieces for Christmas. DS(19) suddenly realised yesterday that he hadn't bought any Christmas presents yet and that he couldn't go to the shops! And I had to queue for the supermarket yesterday - at 7am - first time since the summer.

I can't see how this mass testing is going to work at schools. As our Y12s are over 16 I assume they have to give their own consent?

crazycrofter · 23/12/2020 09:37

Thanks, dh has had a high temperature and been mainly sleeping the last couple of days. Dd had it first and I think she’s on the mend but still mainly in bed! Good job she doesn’t have to go anywhere for a while! I have a headache and cough now. I think it’s hard not knowing what the course of the illness will be or how long it will last.

There have been steady numbers of cases since Sept in both the children’s schools (midlands) - constant isolations and disruption, but I’m not sure if it’s got worse recently or not. Dd felt awful plunging her close contacts at school into Christmas isolation but it sounds like several of them have got rapid tests and are carrying on as normal!
