We just want our kids in school. Please. If at all possible.

And driving lessons. And good Mental Health. And happiness.

In-and-amongst all this Covid nightmare and lockdown debacle.

I am dithering about whether I should get a test as I have a sore throat and a bit of a cough, but my sense of smell is fine, I get coughs every year and have not been anywhere so I am not sure I should. How did other people decide they needed a test?

Piggyinblankets · 18/12/2020 18:09

Plenty of people I know with those symptoms ahve tested positive. You haven't been anywhere but you have a DC who has been in a school.. I'd get a test...most likely to be nothing but at least you'd know.

Shimy · 18/12/2020 18:15

@ealingwestmum

Does your school website/portal provide you with 2022 exam boards Shimy? Otherwise, I’d drop them an email to ask. AS, not Core here so sorry I can’t help further...
Not sure I’ve understood your question but they don’t offer Core Maths at his school.
ealingwestmum · 18/12/2020 18:27

Ah, apologies Shimy; I misunderstood.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 18/12/2020 18:29

Just had an email from school confirming only years 11 and 13 back for first week and then other back by 11th Jan.

Monkey, I’d go for a test if I were you. A lot of people say that they didn’t get the loss of smell/taste for about 4 or 5 days after the symptoms you describe.

ealingwestmum · 18/12/2020 18:30

Another yes to getting yourself tested Monkey. I don’t remember the numbers growing this fast even in April/May, I don’t want to look at the Spector app anymore!

sandybayley · 18/12/2020 18:48

@Monkey2001 - my first symptom of as sore throat, then cough and then temperature. I only lost smell when all the other symptoms disappeared! I'd get a test.

Chabbylis · 18/12/2020 21:48

I would get a test @Monkey2001 And then at least you’ll know. Hope your symptoms don’t get any worse and you feel better soon.

Chabbylis · 18/12/2020 21:49

Re talk of testing all pupils on return (not compulsory which is another issue!) I’m wondering who is going to be administering the testing? Shouldn’t be teachers - that’s not their job!

I saw a Facebook plea for volunteers today from Dd old school. Don't fancy it much !
Monkey2001 · 19/12/2020 08:36

Thanks all, will book a test.

Oblomov20 · 19/12/2020 10:51

I'm just glad that my 2 x ds's made it to the end of term yesterday.
We have had an easy ride of it to be fair, none of us being unwell in the slightest.

Prompted by this thread, I just asked Ds1 about his GCSE certificates, and apparently he got them the other day and filed them in his folder in the filing cabinet! Shock He never said a word to me!

Like Popcorn we have no one visiting, but christingle (my only annual visit to a church) and a meal out on Christmas Eve is one of my most favourite things, and it's our ONLY event, so that's hacked me off.

Schools Christmas video was funny as usual.

Poor Head having to send that email, re first week back. I'm fine with it. How the government Expect schools to take responsibility for getting all kids tested is disgraceful.

Oh well. Onwards to 2021. Xmas Smile

My two made it to the end of term with no SI either. But everything we had planned is now cancelled, we are still in tier 2 but everyone we would normally see is in Tier 3 or very close to the boundary and it's just not worth the risk. We had booked panto but the theatre is in tier 3 so it's cancelled. Swimming carries on - I never thought that my entire social life would consist of sitting by the poolside several metres from one other parent chaperone in masks a few times a week. Still at least there are no early morning sessions over the holidays.

DS's school have said they will be asking for volunteers to help with the testing but details are to follow next week. I could do it on my day off. What a logistical nightmare. It will have to go on for months won't it.

sansou · 19/12/2020 13:20

DS broke up midweek. Email from school yesterday notifying parents of 2 positive cases in sixth form. We're not impacted and staying put in any event but everyone knows who it is despite the school not naming them. Quite a few unhappy families now have to SI for 10 days which obviously covers Christmas although no one is to blame. Totally asymptomatic cases revealed via random ONS household testing. Just as well, my parents and DH's side of the family have all mutually agreed in advance to not see each other this year for Christmas and to plan for a socially distanced summer meet up instead.

Heifer · 19/12/2020 16:08

@Piggyinblankets

Just o correct you there heifer, planning an online lesson takes twice as long as a normal lesson...
Fair point @Piggyinblankets. I guess I was looking at it from DD's point of view in that it doesn't "seem" any different for her - but makes sense that there is a lot of behind the scenes planning what to cover/say etc.

Received an email from the school as expected. Only years 11 & 13 are back 1st week, Yr 9/10 & 12 are online as timetables and Yrs 7 & 8 will have work set. I feel for all the SLT and teachers who thought they would have some rest and could forget about school for just a few days!
Also mentioned that she would write to us all in January with more details about the new Covid-19 testing regime for all secondary age children. You can tell she is really not happy.

Got to admit to feeling a bit meh today. It's DD's 17th tomorrow and I can't actually be bothered to wrap her presents - of course I will, but I really don't want to. I want to sleep or just lounge. Been working a lot more than usual recently and not used to it. Behind with everything.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 19/12/2020 16:58

We’ve just gone from Tier 2 to Tier 4 in 24 hours! Those last bits of Christmas shopping I guess won’t happen now, will have to make do with what we’ve got.

Anyone know if outdoor sports is cancelled? DS had a football match tomorrow.

ExpensivelyDecorated · 19/12/2020 18:22

I don't know about outdoor sport, we are tier 2 but DS has football training in tier 4 tomorrow. I don't think he'll be going.

Piggyinblankets · 19/12/2020 18:35

Not allowed to travel into tier 4 so definitely not.

We are in tier 4 SadNo golf for DH...

I am quite glad no more football for DS. Cases in teens around here are crazy but lots of people ahve a very gung ho attitude.

On reflection maybe that shouldn't be a but!

Piggyinblankets · 19/12/2020 18:57

Just read on some tier 4 info that youth and disability sport is still allowed.

Piggyinblankets · 19/12/2020 18:57

As is golf...!

PaddingtonPaddington · 19/12/2020 19:17

DDs youth orchestra due to meet tomorrow and Monday has just been cancelled. She’s gutted but understands it’s the right thing to do. We’re in tier 2.

ExpensivelyDecorated · 19/12/2020 19:20

DS's football is disability, but I still don't think he'll be going.

AndwhenyougetthereFoffsomemore · 19/12/2020 22:15

T4 here

Plus to add to the fun, MIL and FIL are now in hospital: FIL recovering from a mayor op and due home in a few days, MIL with a treatable unrelated issue and then tested positive for covid on admission! So we're not trying to work out how to manage getting them both home in a safe way: looks likely that dh will travel up to look after one or both: I suspect he'll be away over Christmas which is going to be tough. I love MIL and FIL to bits, and want him to go, but uggghh, not going to be the lovely chilled family Christmas I had in mind!

Agree with everyone else though that my sympathy is with the poor schools and teachers: can't believe the expectations and changes being thrown at schools at such short notice. My two had their last day as fully online learning, and you could tell listening into just a few mins what a hard space it was for the teachers.

KingscoteStaff · 19/12/2020 22:32

Bought tree this afternoon and luckily picked up last 2 presents on the way home.

DD watched the news and then asked us if the government had seemed to be in charge when we were her age...

Monkey2001 · 19/12/2020 23:27

@AndwhenyougetthereFoffsomemore that is a rubbish situation for all of you. Hope the DC help you to make some positive memories over Christmas and that the in-laws get better soon. Flowers
