Hello, I know there’s an excellent thread for the girls. Not sure if there’s one for the boys? Anyone want to come on board? I know we can’t divulge details of round two grammars since there will be late sitters, but was thinking more of a support thread. Any takers?

Curious to know how people’s DS are holding up? Post ISEB and a couple of interviews, which keep us nicely humming along til end of term, we have seemed to hit a brick wall - motivation now is almost at an all time low. Whilst there is reason for celebration upon hopefully receiving 2nd round invitations /interviews, we are equally filled with utter dread of going back into the revision book trenches? Has this years revised 11+ process been stretched out too far and will have an impact on their mental health?

Sutton Grammar School results are out:

1021 candidates sat the second stage test and 836 met the required standard. For candidates who met the required standard, no information regarding their marks will be given to parents. Please note that, due to over-subscription, meeting the required standard does not guarantee an offer of a place at our school.

GrammarHopeful · 16/12/2020 12:53

YES!

breathes a sigh of huge relief

DS has met SGS's required standard. He is exstatic, having missed St Olave's Stage 2 cut-off by one point last week.

Hope today brings good news to others who were waiting!

PitNicking · 16/12/2020 12:57

Ah well done GrammarHopeful's DS! That's wonderful news. Your DS much be so made up Star

@EnolanotAlone We've not done a single thing since the ISEB! Perhaps naively, I didn't think there was much to do now the grammars and the ISEB were out of the way.

Do you have many more exams coming up or is this for the interviews?

TadlowDogIncident · 16/12/2020 13:09

DS didn't get an interview at City. Waiting for LU results but not feeling hopeful - thankfully the local state school is good and we might have sent him there anyway, so I'm trying not to stress too much. Would be nice to know, though!

GrammarHopeful · 16/12/2020 13:15

Thank you, @PitNicking, he is was crying his hear out last night, knowing that the results are coming today and worrying he didn't pass, so we can now have some time to just enjoy being a family again.

Wilson's results came in less than 20 min after. He didn't pass, but only just by less than 10 ponts (475 was the pass mark, he got high 460s), so I am not upset at the slightest, as we now have to excellent grammars to chose from.

GrammarHopeful · 16/12/2020 13:16

hear two

Sterou · 16/12/2020 13:18

DS pointed out that whilst he has met the criteria and seemingly rather happy with himself, as the ranking is not released there is no way of calculating the probability to get in ! with 836 hopeful for 135 spaces... he is not sure that was news worthy... thoughts?

I believe Wilson's usually go to around rank 400 on their list and SGS around 600. Their list of eligible boys has to allow for all the boys who put another school first, decide it is too far, go the Indie route etc.

It's much easier to gauge for the girls, who get their scores. Poor boys really do have a long wait until March! Still, it means they all start without a pre-conceived rank order, which I think is a good thing.

Sterou · 16/12/2020 13:42

Still have not received Wilson??

Jumpalicious · 16/12/2020 14:00

DS qualified for Sutton (& previously wallington), but not Wilson’s. Worried now. Sorry to be a downer... but now I’m wondering: Does he stand any chance of actually getting a place? Like Pps son says, hundreds have qualified and there are only 100+ places per school. I do acknowledge they’ve all done really well to get this far. But this is a tricky result. Or should I be feeling more positive, and unclench?!! Argh, awful process this!

DS sat the Sutton SET and also for Trinity - he got through to WCGS but gutted as just got the emails of no to Wilsons and SGS. He also sat Trinity last weekend as a back up as we're in Sutton borough and the non-selectives we're near have dire results. Probably due to the 100's of out of borough kids nicking the places in the grammars but that's another thread!

I found some info on another forum which might be useful for anyone wanting to know stats of likelihood of admissions - www.elevenplusexams.co.uk/forum/11plus/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=61489

As I now have the detailed marks from SGS, does anyone know if there's a way to work out what his SET Stage 1 mark might be so I can see how close he is to the WCGS cut off for this year? I believe it's 213.9 - if his results are like 214 I am not sure I will be sleeping properly until 1st March.

Jumpalicious · 16/12/2020 14:03

Ps 836 qualified for Sutton; 639 for Wilson. My child just missed Wilson by a fingernail.

TeddyDidIt · 16/12/2020 14:05

@Jumpalicious are you in catchment for SGS? I have known several boys pass for SGS and not Wilson's and still get an offer from SGS on offer day, but they were in catchment.

Passing WCGS makes an offer very likely, evening if via the waiting list.

Jumpalicious · 16/12/2020 14:06

I have info that required pass mark for Wilson was 475. But I don’t know how you work out your score from round 1. Be helpful if they just shared it!

Thanks @TeddyDidIt that’s helpful to know!

In other news... we got the yellow box from Hampton today 😁. I may just eat the skittles myself to de-stress (only joking, sort of).

Sterou · 16/12/2020 14:16

Has anyone received a positive Wilson yet? we still have not heard ?!?!

Yes they have... but emails may still be going out. Do check spam. I’m sure you have!

Ps having said that, @Sterou, I read that on the other 11+ exam site. Their positive email was received about 10.30 today. Has any one on here had positive news from Wilson?

Sorry I sound slightly obsessively unhinged here! (11+ exam chat rooms and all, bleurgh!!)

EnolanotAlone · 16/12/2020 14:39

@PitNicking we are awaiting round 2 outcomes this week with mixed feelings, with more exam papers to sit if successful. In addition the possibility schools will be asking for a creative writing task or maths (depending on relative strengths) within the interview stage. The selection process & scrutiny never ends.

GrammarHopeful · 16/12/2020 14:40

@Jumpalicious, no need to apologised, I could barely sleep today awaiting the results, and had also dreamt about it :/

@notabirthday, there is no real way of knowing, which is crazy, if you ask me. However, I think you could do a reasonably good extrapolation/guesstimate, knowing how SGS put their final results together (2:2:3:3) and digging through the past years' data on www.whatdotheyknow.com/body/sutton_grammar_school. It won't be pefect, but it won't be far off, as the data is pretty uniform year-on-year (and, anecdotally, this year's results are more challenging, given certaint families had a lot more time to prepare than ordinarily).

TeddyDidIt · 16/12/2020 14:45

Easily done @Jumpalicious I know it took up much of my headspace when my DS did it last year! Didn't help being on maternity leave Grin

BookShark · 16/12/2020 14:58

Well we have no Hampton box, but we do have an offer of an interview. On balance, I'll take that!

GrammarHopeful · 16/12/2020 15:00

@BookShark yep, was just about to write the same! Wink
