Thread 8 Carry on Corona Cohort: GAV give us the CAG?

OrangeCinnamon1 · 16/08/2020 09:10

Welcome all to the 8th Thread for this year's GCSE cohort the Corona Cohort!

Some of us have been here since I started first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. It is hoped this will continue. Going forward we intend to stay in secondary so any new threads should have 'GCSE Summer 2020 Thread # : Carry on Corona Cohort' in title just to make it easier to find.

From now on our DS/DD may go down various paths so we decided not to be exclusionary and stay right here in Secondary until HQ chuck us Grin
At this precise moment in time we are awaiting GCSE results that seem to have been produced by an algorithm that also takes very little account of Teacher Centre Assessed Grades. There is an appeal process but it was changed yesterday to include mock results and coursework, then taken down again for review.
Trying to protect our young people's mental health.during this shit show , which the government claims is their priority...when they talk about wanting students back in schools/college in September...

first ever thread

Channel 4 news has David Davis. Re A'levels. Why him? But he did say that Gavin just needs to put his right. Because a mistake has been made.

@Wheresthebeach I’ve been like it since Friday Sad Dreading trying to work tomorrow as I just can’t focus!

I’m slightly worried and annoyed about how the tone of this whole fiasco is being cleverly turned into a state/private school war. I was intending to join the protests myself had I known about it before today but shocked to see placards shouting “Justice for State schools”, “You get the grades if you pay”.

The slight advantage in this silly algorithm obviously benefits some tiny schools eg the type described by @ItsAllAFugazi with cohorts of less than 15. These are hardly the numbers at your average private school. I’ve also heard ‘Eton equals As’ (Eton has a population of about 1300boys!) that alone doesn’t make it a Private/state thing. I wish people would get their facts right before they start spouting rubbish, causing even more anger and division.

Shimy · 16/08/2020 18:37

I actually made a mistake in my post just now about the numbers(that’s serve me right to hastily post after just waking up).The cohort of 15 is about the numbers per subject not school population, so Eton’s population is moot point. But most independent schools have been downgraded, except in subjects where there is such a small cohort but it seems people are becoming blinded by this and just think private school students have not had the algorithm applied to them.

RedskyAtnight · 16/08/2020 18:43

There's also the case that private schools (particularly the very selective ones) tend to have more consistent results, over a smaller range of grades so making their performance consistent with last year's is more valid than it would be at a large sixth form college with very volatile intake. That would be true of the super-selective grammars as well though.

But, I do agree, I think the narrative should be that pupils deserve to have results based on them as an individual, not them as a statistic. Clearly the "disadvantaging state school pupils" makes a better story.

(DS goes to a large comp with very varied intakes including a massive expansion last year which caused a real anomaly year; I'm not expecting the algorithm to favour his school, but I can still see that plenty of private school children have also been unfairly treated)

Piggywaspushed · 16/08/2020 18:43

Just checking in! Finding whole thing increasingly draining.

Seeing this come up more and more.

Wheresthebeach · 16/08/2020 18:50

DD now referring to Thursday’s results as a dry run....

Janie74 · 16/08/2020 18:51

I have wasted the whole day checking for updates. This is just intolerable Sad - surely we’ve all waited long enough?

I am all for not releasing the results if they give CAGs, on Thursday. Not in 2 bloody weeks time.
Comefromaway · 16/08/2020 18:52

My daughter is at a private school. Her fees are paid by the government but it is classed as private.

Her cohort of 12 were marked down. That’s because results were really good last year but poor the previous 2.

stoneysongs · 16/08/2020 18:55

I think Shimy there have been a couple of stark statistics which people are focussing on - the admissions officer from Worcester College Oxford said that 1/4 of their offer holders from state schools were downgraded, compared to 1/10 of their offer holders from private schools. Of course some private schools have been very badly affected too so it's not as simple as a clear cut divide by sector, but overall it seems as though state school students might be disproportionately affected. The other stat that people latched on to was the increase in A*/A grades in the private sector was double that of the state sector.

Appuskidu · 16/08/2020 18:55

@Wheresthebeach

There’s no need to delay. They have the information from teachers and could take action now if they wanted. Interesting the Fail still have up a piece saying CAGs for appeals, and nobody else does.
That Fail article is horribly confusing-it was written after the 5pm Ofqual release but only mentions the 11pm change in a really roundabout way.
cariadambyth · 16/08/2020 18:56

I have absolutely nothing constructive or helpful to add but I can’t tell you all how grateful I am for this amazing and supportive thread. These poor children.

stoneysongs · 16/08/2020 19:00

The A level results seemed like an absolute lottery, no school or pupil was safe from the bloody algorithm except those ranked no.1. Even their achievement would be constrained by whatever no. Had achieved in previous years.

I can't fathom whether DS is in a good position or a terrible one. His school's A level results went down a bit overall but I don't know if that involved some individual injustices or whether everyone got away relatively unscathed.

stoneysongs · 16/08/2020 19:01

*whatever no.1 had achieved

littlebillie · 16/08/2020 19:01

Is it true they are considering a 2 week delay? Going with Cags instead

stoneysongs · 16/08/2020 19:02

Little
Kenneth Baker (who I must admit I thought was dead) suggested it. Everyone thinks it's a stupid idea.

itsgettingweird · 16/08/2020 19:02

Can I sneak in?

My ds is year 11 and due to get results this Thursday.

He's taking it all in his stride. I'm terrified for him (but hiding it well)

But he just seems to think that because his mocks were good it doesn't matter as he can appeal for that grade.

I fear it won't be so simple?

Northumberlandlass · 16/08/2020 19:07

Welcome @itsgettingweird 😊 !

Fiddlersgreen · 16/08/2020 19:14

Thank you for the new thread, just checking in.

Have been at work today so just spent the last hour or so catching up!
As pp’s have said I’ve become obsessed with checking this thread/bbc news at every opportunity!!

OrangeCinnamon1 · 16/08/2020 19:14

Welcome @itsgettingweird no sneaking on this thread we'll leave that to Ofqual, Gav and Boris Grin

I just can’t think of anything else except exams. It’s occupied most of the last week- any spare moment, writing to Mps, completing any petitions I can find, today downloading 3 years of school data to analyse. It’s the first thing I think of when I wake and and last thought at night, I’ll probably start having nightmares about them soon.

OrangeCinnamon1 · 16/08/2020 19:16

Where the hell are they though ? Or anyone with anything useful to say...It beggars belief it really does!
