Thread 8 Carry on Corona Cohort: GAV give us the CAG?

OrangeCinnamon1 · 16/08/2020 09:10

Welcome all to the 8th Thread for this year's GCSE cohort the Corona Cohort!

Some of us have been here since I started first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. It is hoped this will continue. Going forward we intend to stay in secondary so any new threads should have 'GCSE Summer 2020 Thread # : Carry on Corona Cohort' in title just to make it easier to find.

From now on our DS/DD may go down various paths so we decided not to be exclusionary and stay right here in Secondary until HQ chuck us Grin
At this precise moment in time we are awaiting GCSE results that seem to have been produced by an algorithm that also takes very little account of Teacher Centre Assessed Grades. There is an appeal process but it was changed yesterday to include mock results and coursework, then taken down again for review.
Trying to protect our young people's mental health.during this shit show , which the government claims is their priority...when they talk about wanting students back in schools/college in September...

first ever thread

Long time lurker here. Our school is very small, the whole year group doesn’t exceed 35 pupils so most classes are 15 and under. Having read the first few pages of “the report” I’m wondering if this will mean than most of our cohort will receive their CAG’s.
Which somehow doesn’t seem fair on the regular sized schools and highlights yet another flaw in the algorithm.

LillyM50 · 16/08/2020 16:32

@singingstones Thank you

Does anyone know how it works with historical date being small. DD is in a class with 16 for History so so CAGs however in 2019 only 14 and in 2018 only 3! took history. 2019 was average but 2018 very poor.

LillyM50 · 16/08/2020 16:33

please excuse the typos, DD had a low day and i had enough.

ClarasZoo · 16/08/2020 16:40

Does anyone know what weight is given to CAG/algorithm with a 5-15 cohort? Is it 50/50 for example?

FoolsAssassin · 16/08/2020 16:45

No I think it is more sliding Clara.
Lily, really sorry but I don’t know. So sorry to hear it’s a hard day.

LillyM50 · 16/08/2020 16:50

Thank you @FoolsAssassin. She's been really struggling to cope with it. I will be so glad when it's Friday, regardless of grades I need her to stop worrying.

Sarahbeans · 16/08/2020 17:02

Just checking in to the new thread. Not got a lot to add, except thanks for all the links people are putting up.

I'm lucky that my daughter is enrolling to college on Tuesday, so we are trying to park the stress for now. Doing my best to act cool and calm around DD, but it's killing me.

Need to channel my inner zen. Smile

Monkey2001 · 16/08/2020 17:10

I think a delay is a terrible idea, no more of this limbo, they should revert to CAGs before Thursday!

Comefromaway · 16/08/2020 17:15

With regards to CAG & rankings. If your child isona small cohort with regular accurate feedback then they will have a pretty accurate idea. My son’s music teacher told him and us on several occasions that a grade 7 would be worse case scenario with it more likely being 8 or 9 on a good day. There were only 20 kids taking music and he knew he was consistently top of the class and he was the only one with formal music grades out of school.

In maths the teacher said in Year 9 he predicted grade 7 but due to lack of effort a 5 was a dead cert but he would like him to aim higher for a 6. But with over 100 kids who knows where he was ranked.

LillyM50 · 16/08/2020 17:17

@Monkey2001 I agree. My DD just need to know and move on. Any delays would just add more anxiety for everyone.

Oblomov20 · 16/08/2020 17:20

"The GCSE results should be postponed for two weeks. "

Errr. NO.
Just NO.
No one wants this to drag on for another 2 weeks.

stoneysongs · 16/08/2020 17:25

There will be lots of children whose grades are not downgraded, or whose sixth form place is there for them no matter what, so they can appeal at their leisure iyswim. From their perspective it seems very unfair to delay the results. For those who are badly affected, the sooner we know, the better.
What on earth is going on at Ofqual, I don't remember ever seeing a public body this transparently in crisis.

stoneysongs · 16/08/2020 17:29

Saw this from Ian McMillan

You say level up
I say downgrade
You say uplevel
I say gradedown
Level up
Downgrade
Uplevel
Gradedown
Let's qual the whole thing Of

OrangeCinnamon1 · 16/08/2020 17:33

@singingstones that's great !

Wheresthebeach · 16/08/2020 17:35

There’s no need to delay. They have the information from teachers and could take action now if they wanted. Interesting the Fail still have up a piece saying CAGs for appeals, and nobody else does.

OrangeCinnamon1 · 16/08/2020 17:42

@Wheresthebeach yes ...I wonder if that is some kind of spin to gauge reaction?

Anyone remember the 'Thick of It' this is what it feels like ....our children are being subjected to on the hoof decisions and U turns , noone has a clue , data is all wrong. Everyone about as useful as a Chocolate teapot .

But we are the sweary ones 😉

@singingstones Thanks for making me smile Smile

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 16/08/2020 18:04

I used to love The Thick Of It. I bet that represents whats going on in Gav's offices and Ofqual offices as we speak. With the swearing. Grin

MarmiteCrumpet25 · 16/08/2020 18:06

BJ needs to come back from his holiday and sort out the mess. Some chance though.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 16/08/2020 18:07

BJ is hiding in a fridge somewhere til it's all over.

Cherryonthetop2019 · 16/08/2020 18:09

I can’t bear the thought of a longer wait. Am I the only one frantically flicking between here and the news pages hoping for an update?

Wheresthebeach · 16/08/2020 18:12

I think you’re right orange. It seems to me that this is how this government floats their ideas esp via The Fail.

RedskyAtnight · 16/08/2020 18:14

ITV and Channel 4 news both had the results scandal (is it officially a scandal now?) as their lead story. Good to see it's not dropping off the media spotlight.

Cherryonthetop2019 · 16/08/2020 18:14

Just seen this on the A Level thread:

*Spoken to my exams officer relative today who says word on the street is that gcses have been marked down more than A LEVELS.

Hope it's not true.*

Wheresthebeach · 16/08/2020 18:15

No @Cherryonthetop2019 me too...waste of a day as I can’t concentrate on anything else.
