Thread 8 Carry on Corona Cohort: GAV give us the CAG?

OrangeCinnamon1 · 16/08/2020 09:10

Welcome all to the 8th Thread for this year's GCSE cohort the Corona Cohort!

Some of us have been here since I started first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. It is hoped this will continue. Going forward we intend to stay in secondary so any new threads should have 'GCSE Summer 2020 Thread # : Carry on Corona Cohort' in title just to make it easier to find.

From now on our DS/DD may go down various paths so we decided not to be exclusionary and stay right here in Secondary until HQ chuck us Grin
At this precise moment in time we are awaiting GCSE results that seem to have been produced by an algorithm that also takes very little account of Teacher Centre Assessed Grades. There is an appeal process but it was changed yesterday to include mock results and coursework, then taken down again for review.
Trying to protect our young people's mental health.during this shit show , which the government claims is their priority...when they talk about wanting students back in schools/college in September...

So I wonder if this will change how school do it this week? Will they just send an email with the CAG on Thursday? And have an official results day next week ( going in to get envelope)?? Crikey this is all so confusing

Alsoplayspiccolo · 17/08/2020 23:51

Devlesko, your DD sounds wonderful! Such a great attitude!

What instrument does she play? DH and I are both professional musicians; we both went to Conservatoire’s, and met when we were both working for the same orchestra.
DS (14) is a cellist and has just been offered a place at junior conservatoire from September.

I’ll keep everything crossed for your DD for Thursday 🤞🏻

Monkey2001 · 18/08/2020 00:17

I think "official results" may just refer to A level and AS level people and will be the higher of their CAGs and calculated results and that we will never see the GCSE calculated results. The press release is ambiguous.

Monkey2001 · 18/08/2020 00:19

Actually, I seem to remember that on results day DS1 got a piece of paper from each board, so I think that next week the GCSE students will just get the CAGs on Board paper instead of school paper. I can see no reason for them to tell us if the calculated results were different as it would just make the grade inflation worse.

Monkey2001 · 18/08/2020 00:21
@Northumberlandlass omg how on earth are you going to wait until then?!

8am email here, 36 hrs 8 mins to go Grin
Ever since lock down began I have had a sketchy idea of the day of the week and had to spend a couple of minutes working out whether this Monday or Tuesday.

I am afraid you have an extra 24 hours to wait!

Shimy · 18/08/2020 00:27

@itsgettingweird Well done to your DS and you for coming this far. Hand holding with you and others for Thursday. We’ve all fought so hard for our dc to have the same opportunities as their peers. I still remember bravely holding back tears as I drove home with DS who had a face like thunder after yet another difficult meeting at school about various problems and watching lots of neurotypical kids smiling, skipping and just having a lovely time asthey walkedwith their parents at pickup. One time he was given a detention and told to stand outside the classroom door. It was a bitterly cold winter. Teacher complained that DS kicked the classroom door and punching the door repeatedly and disrupted the lesson, I was in bits. 3days later when he had calmed down, he told me he was freezing, he hadn’t been allowed to put his coat on before leaving the classroom and he was left outside the door. He’d been knocking at first for the teacher to let him in to get his coat but the teacher said no. He was so cold and it was snowing too, that’s when he started kicking and hammering at the door. He was only 7yrs old.
I don’t mean to go on, but today just seems like such a triumph, another milestone we can draw a line under. That’s why it’s been so important that he gets those predicted A’s, not just for the next stage but to prove to himself and others I suppose that he is cleverSmile.

Monkey2001 · 18/08/2020 00:41

@Shimy that is a heart-breaking story. So glad that it is in the past and things are better for him now. Flowers

happymummy2010 · 18/08/2020 06:18

Sorry If this has already been covered but I'm struggling to understand why we need to wait a week for the Ofqual awarded grades to be issued ?

The schools must already have the CAG, so why can't Ofqual send their moderated results to schools to be printed and the two sets issued to students on Thursday morning ?

Paranoidmarvin · 18/08/2020 06:22

Does anyone know what we will be getting on Thursday. Are these the real ones. Do we change. I cannot tell u how sick to death I am of this. I really can’t.

Northumberlandlass · 18/08/2020 06:28

Good morning!
Sorry, I disappeared last night. I felt utterly exhausted from tweeting & ranting. Plus we opened a bottle (or 2) of wine!

I’m not sure I understand the press release re CAG on Thurs & official results. I am sure it will become clear....ish!

GW is showing his face on bbc breakfast, likely to blame OFQUAL.

This thread has never been state vs private - it’s been a safe place for concerned parents to talk regardless of where are children are educated. The algorithm managed to highlight the differences, but that was because of smaller subject groups, which are more likely to be found in Indie’s, but a number of large Indie’s were affected along with a random selection of smaller schools. It was an inherently unfair algorithm.

Hope everyone is ok. I realise there are still concerns out there.

stoneysongs · 18/08/2020 06:47

@Monkey2001 I realised this late last night, it was still only Monday! 😫
(Sorry about that @StillDumDeDumming)

Ok - 49 hrs 13 mins to go

GreekOddess · 18/08/2020 06:49

It's beyond a joke now. Until yesterday afternoon the results that they would've received would have been the moderated grades from the algorithm so presumably those grades have been calculated so why on earth do we now have to wait a further week for them?

On Thursday when our children receive their results it's possible that they could not be the final grade and could actually be higher. In most cases it won't make much difference but in some cases it will make a difference to their future plans.

What an anti climax for our kids 🙄

Northumberlandlass · 18/08/2020 06:50

@singingstones it’s already been a LONG week!

Confusedbutheyho · 18/08/2020 06:54

This is beyond a joke and just too much strain on teens and their parents to wait another week to find out ‘official’ calculated grades.

What will happen at sixth form enrolments if the results aren’t final until another week!!

This is too much strain. My daughter has bitten away her nails Sad

EasilyDelighted · 18/08/2020 07:01

Has anyone else got any BTEC subjects at L2 as well as GCSEs? After reading about the delays/moderation to some Level 3 results I'm a bit nervous about those too.

FoolsAssassin · 18/08/2020 07:20

We’re supposed to be making a 2 hour trip for DS to enrol on Friday and dropping some of his stuff off.

I am assuming that any results that come next week would only be higher so if they get enough to be accepted on Thursday they are in.

stoneysongs · 18/08/2020 07:30

I do wonder about the delay in issuing the moderated grades when they must be ready to go now. I guess they are only going to tell us any changes from the CAGs so that the extent of the GCSE cock up is less clear. I'd be very interested to see them - presumably nosy people like me could get hold of them via a subject access request.

itsgettingweird · 18/08/2020 07:31

Shimy your poor ds. Luckily he didn't come across people who punished him for meltdowns. The problem school just ignored his distress and denied it meaning he completely broke down in the end.

itsgettingweird · 18/08/2020 07:31
@Monkey2001 I realised this late last night, it was still only Monday! 😫

🤣🤣

Northumberlandlass · 18/08/2020 07:35

Yes @FoolsAssassin I assume the CAG’s are the worst scenario!

Good luck to your DS - how exciting for him.

DS just keeps saying that he’s looking forward to starting 6th form & moving on!

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 18/08/2020 07:44

So Gav just said we will get Final grades on Thursday and certification next week?

Northumberlandlass · 18/08/2020 07:45

That’s what I heard @JustHereWithMyPopcorn

MirandaWest · 18/08/2020 07:46

It's only Tuesday. I feel there's time for a few variations on a theme to happen by Thursday Grin

Piggywaspushed · 18/08/2020 07:46

Gavin just proper confused me! I rewound it twice!
Exams officers must be having kittens!!

PaddingtonPaddington · 18/08/2020 07:47

What certification is Gav talking about?
