Thread 8 Carry on Corona Cohort: GAV give us the CAG?

OrangeCinnamon1 · 16/08/2020 09:10

Welcome all to the 8th Thread for this year's GCSE cohort the Corona Cohort!

Some of us have been here since I started first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. It is hoped this will continue. Going forward we intend to stay in secondary so any new threads should have 'GCSE Summer 2020 Thread # : Carry on Corona Cohort' in title just to make it easier to find.

From now on our DS/DD may go down various paths so we decided not to be exclusionary and stay right here in Secondary until HQ chuck us Grin
At this precise moment in time we are awaiting GCSE results that seem to have been produced by an algorithm that also takes very little account of Teacher Centre Assessed Grades. There is an appeal process but it was changed yesterday to include mock results and coursework, then taken down again for review.
Trying to protect our young people's mental health.during this shit show , which the government claims is their priority...when they talk about wanting students back in schools/college in September...

I really really hope they don't go with the plan to delay the results by two weeks Shock

For a start round here all pupils have their college interviews next week to enrol on their course.

It would be first day of term if they delayed Sad

stoneysongs · 17/08/2020 07:36

Northern Ireland GCSE grades will be CAGs

Great news - hoping Wales will be next and then surely England will have no choice?

Nard75 · 17/08/2020 07:38

Surely if they are CAGs they will have to be delayed so the results can be reissued unless they can do all this by Thursday. What a shambles.

Cherryonthetop2019 · 17/08/2020 07:38

If Wales follow suit then if Engakdndont follow suit I will be finding a solicitor myself and taking legal action. This is a joke! Where the bloody bell is our Prime Minister?!?!?!

FoolsAssassin · 17/08/2020 07:41

If they are CAGs, the school has already has the data. They don’t get exam results until the day before usually is it? So they could issue the CAGs as they have them I would think ? Then the exam board can follow up with official documentation but at least the students would know where they stand on Thursday.

MrsHamlet · 17/08/2020 07:41

@FoolsAssassin I get the worry. I can't say I'm not worried. But you can't do anything about appeals unless you're the centre so you just have to trust that they'll do it.
Write the email wrapper now ready to send when you've got the grades, so that all you have to do is fill in the bits you want appealed.
We weren't expecting there to be appeals this year, and that might still change, so that caught us out a bit. But if you know and trust the school and the teachers, then that should alleviate some of the worry.

Janie74 · 17/08/2020 07:43

Great news for Northern Ireland! Smile

Surely they’ll have to follow suit in England and Wales? Surely...? Confused

MirandaWest · 17/08/2020 07:44

Well done Northern Ireland

FoolsAssassin · 17/08/2020 07:46

I’m cross and ranting MrsHamlet in a random, sleep deprived way more than anything else, apologies and please ignore me! You are being very kind Smile I am just so cross for everyone - students, teachers and parents. It’s the fact that it’s causing so much stress and was so unnecessary.
I do think actually think cross covers it

MirandaWest · 17/08/2020 07:46

In our local paper, the headteacher of one of the local secondary schools has written a letter about the issues.

Online comments are generally along the line of saying that it’s teachers faults for over estimating and that everyone is a woolly lefty. You would never think that one of the local MPs is labour (or that the area as a whole voted to remain in the EU) from the comments that always appear

seashellssand · 17/08/2020 07:48

GCSES iin N Ireland will now NOT be decided by the algorithm that’s caused so much damage for A level students. Instead they’ll use teacher assessed grades (

FoolsAssassin · 17/08/2020 07:49

@Janie74

Great news for Northern Ireland! Smile

Surely they’ll have to follow suit in England and Wales? Surely...? Confused

You know how much Johnson hates being seen to do the same as other countries...
Nard75 · 17/08/2020 07:49

This might be a stupid question but why weren’t CAGs used in the first place? Wasn’t the whole point in the teachers doing them was because they knew their students best.

seashellssand · 17/08/2020 07:49

surely this means CAGS for us ??

MrsHamlet · 17/08/2020 07:50

@FoolsAssassin I spend my working day with teenagers. Cross and ranting are my bread and butter 😂
It's shit. Monumentally fucking shit. Being calm and measured and hopefully a bit helpful and reassuring is my distraction from the worry about my lovely (and not so lovely) year 11 class who deserved none of this, and my fantastic year 13 classes who didn't either.

MrsHamlet · 17/08/2020 07:52

@Nard75 because the CAGs meant that the pass rate went up too much - way above a normal year. We always knew there would be moderation of the CAGs to keep the grades in line with the trend. But with everyone following their trend to a greater or lesser degree, it went too high.

FoolsAssassin · 17/08/2020 07:53

I am taking a moment to reflect on the that I am in toddler tantrum mode and that menopause , pandemics and Johnson is possibly not a great combination 😂 Having a shower to calm down

MrsHamlet · 17/08/2020 07:55

Ah well... if you were in my class, I would invite you to lie on the floor at the front, kick your legs, and scream. That normally averts the teenage tantrum - but an obstreperous y11 boy once did. It was hilarious and his mood was much better afterwards.

Nard75 · 17/08/2020 08:01

@MrsHamlet thanks for being so helpful. We always knew this wasn’t a normal year so why make a bad situation even worse. The kids don’t deserve this and neither do the teachers who have worked so hard to make sure the kids aren’t disadvantaged.

stoneysongs · 17/08/2020 08:02

Wales needs to step up now I think. I've written to the first minister, education minister and my MS.

StillDumDeDumming · 17/08/2020 08:06

So Scotland and Northern island just straight CAGS no moderation. I think dd’s school will do an unofficial results day, if England go the same way. Paperwork to follow

When I Got my gcse results there was a postal strike. At that time you didn’t collect your results from school. We had to go in and because they weren’t allowed to tell us our results, they showed them to us on a piece of paper in complete silence!

StillDumDeDumming · 17/08/2020 08:08

I just can’t see the PM following the others. It’ll be CAGS as appeals. (Hope I’m wrong).

Northumberlandlass · 17/08/2020 08:12

😂 @FoolsAssassin not even HRT is helping my meno rage!

Well done NI.

The algorithm is inherently unfair & listening to the OFQUAL rep on bbc this morning put the blame on teachers, saying you’ll always get teachers who will give their students the benefit of doubt, just enraged me. In the absence of being able to sit any exams, shouldn’t they be allowed that!!

And then trying to justify the ‘unfairness’ by saying grade boundaries changing disadvantages students ever year! well, that’s ok then!

ShaunaTheSheep · 17/08/2020 08:13

The NI logic for GCSE was that there is no prior attainment data to support an appeal.

They have not changed the A level results.
