My daughter is studying the Origins of Musicality as part of her HPQ (Higher Project Qualification). She’s devised a short survey to collect some data on this - the more results she gets the more valid her research becomes. She needs to be careful posting on MN for replies, it is great and MNer's are really helpful, but ds did it once and results were skewed with 98% of respondents female!!!!

I quite liked filling that out tbh.
I really dont think of myself as musical even though I've sung in choirs, can play guitar and penny whistle, can read music and am always helping ds1 with music theory.

If she is looking at the origins of musicality she asks no questions about parents ability. My DD is a grade 8 distinction singer with a place for professional MT training neither of her parents have ever taken a music exam. I like to sing in a choir, but wouldn't consider myself musical.

@Lonecatwithkitten, your DD sounds super-talented. Really exciting that she's training in MT. Lucky girl! I take your point about parents' ability, but I guess this is sort of covered in her question about 'Do you consider yourself to have come from a musical family?' She wanted her survey to be brief so it was quick and easy to complete. Thanks for your input. x

Done! Interesting filling this in; our father was very musical, but played every instrument by ear. Being forced to take grade exams was very uninspiring back in the late 70s, so I’m quite mindful of that with my own children now. Daughter is doing grade 4 piano, and although she is a lovely natural player, finds the repetition a chore. Good luck to your daughter!

Has the school given her guidance on how to do the survey. My DC had to only survey children from within the school and then had to address why the results may be skewed due to the audience. They both got 100% for their HPQ. Is she sure she is following the guidance properly? I am not trying to put down her work but would hate for her to drop marks if she has misunderstood her directive.

Done. She'll have a completely non-musical person in there anyway!

Thanks @SeasonFinale - wow 100% is fantastic! My DD's HPQ supervisor knows about her study so I think it should be fine. I don't think there's specific guidance on how research is conducted so the kids can design this element of the project, as long as the methods and result skews are acknowledged / reported on, as you say.

Thanks so much, @Shannith. All results are valid and massively helpful. My DD is thrilled with the results coming in - please keep them coming everyone as she hopes to get 1,000 results in total... but that's quite ambitious! x

Done...but I think she should have distinguished between currently playing/learning and forced to as a child!!! Plus I have absolutely no idea what grades my siblings got to in the instruments they were forced to play!

It would also maybe be interesting to see if respondents’ children had music lessons.

Done, I hope your DD gets plenty of responses. One thing I did wonder about is the age scale she's used. Generally (speaking as a psychology student) it makes sense to have each point on the scale as an equal amount, so 1-10, 11-20, 21-30 etc. Is there a reason she has split the age groups out the way she has? And has she considered how she might represent that info in a graph/table, without the results seeming quite skewed?
