My daughter is studying the Origins of Musicality as part of her HPQ (Higher Project Qualification). She’s devised a short survey to collect some data on this - the more results she gets the more valid her research becomes. So I’d be really grateful if you (and your family, if poss) would please take a couple of minutes to complete it. To participate, just click on this link:

Thanks so much! Smile x

I read the title as research into the origins of masculinity. Was v confused why PP mentioning singing.

Done.

Done - although I have no recollection of what grade my sister got to, so I guessed, and I thought the definition of “your family” was a bit ambiguous. At the start, it seems quite obvious it’s referring to the immediate family you grew up in (parents, siblings). But then later on in the questions, I’m not sure if it’s referring to them, or my husband and children (who are also “my family”). And the answers re their musicality are quite different!

Good luck to your DD.

I have got DH to fill it in, so you’ll have at least one man Grin

Done!

EnigmaticIcelandShopper · 02/07/2020 23:22

Done. Now feeling a bit bitter I come from a non-musical family, where music was never encouraged, hahaha! Still, I've got some good moves (or so I tell myself) .

Ilovewillow · 02/07/2020 23:28

Done I'll get my daughter to do it too as she's really musical - interesting as from the survey I'm not particularly and her dad certainly isn't!

PianoMumMum · 03/07/2020 00:39

You guys are the best! Thank you so much Smile. Please keep the responses coming in as my DD is now about 70 away from her 1000 target! XxX

Done...but I think she should have distinguished between currently playing/learning and forced to as a child!!!

This. I also think it would have been good to distinguish between those who played as a child by choice and those who were pushed into it by their parents.

I found it difficult to answer the question at the end about how much I enjoy singing/playing an instrument because I absolutely love singing but always hated playing an instrument. So I just went for the middle option instead but it wasn't very accurate.

Georgielovespie · 03/07/2020 17:26

Done, also Ds1 who is 17 filled it in too.

Dh plays guitar, had lessons as a child, I played violin as a child and learned piano, with lessons as an adult. Ds1 played piano in school, now is self taught with both piano and guitar, Ds2 had piano lessons, lasted one year, had talent but didn't care, can sing really well but won't Sad

We always have music on, mine is a mad ecletic mix of Disney, 60s, goth stuff, rock, country and pop! You never know what will come on next from my playlist. I like to keep them on their toes.

What is "musicality" ? Honestly, I don't know.

@lljkk

What is "musicality" ? Honestly, I don't know.
Wikipedia describes it as: "Sensitivity to, knowledge of, or talent for music".

Ah, I did answer correctly Then. The questions only partly asked about musicality.
I mean the Qs asked about taking lessons -- but that doesn't mean you have talent.
Asked about Grades, but plenty of people who are very talented at music never take exams.

People often comment that I am hideously bad at all things musical.
This is in spite of many years of trying to get better, including some lessons. I am also told that I have improved a lot, so I guess there aren't adjectives to describe how awful I used to be. All that effort never gave me musicality. It just can't happen for some people.

My cousin opened his mouth at age 3 and could already single beautifully. Neither of his parents are musical afaik. It's a funny talent.
