Year 10 returning

Our school has done a survey prior to planning any timetables for year 10 returning to ask if parents want to send their children back this term or not. Have other schools had this choice and will you send your year 10's back or not ?

Our school sent a questionnaire but didn't explicitly ask this question (yet).
They have however said that no one will be fined for not sending their child back and that work will continue to be posted online.
They are splitting the year group in two and offering alternate weeks in socially distanced groups.

I'd love for DD to go back but her MH isn't going to be good enough. I have no idea what to do.

Yes and Yes. My year 10 needs to get back into school. As does my year 9 but I don't think that's likely at all.

stardustliz · 23/05/2020 14:38

Are the school or GP helping with your child's mental health. There is support still around, although it is over the phone or video. Hope you manage to get some support.

My Y10 isn't likely to go back until Sept I don't think. His school have sent an email to say they are working to try and get school safe enough for them to come back but we can keep them off until Sept if we want. They have suggested it won't be lessons but maybe one to ones or part days to speak to children about bits of work they are struggling with. Part days won't work for me with working and he doesn't want to go back but will wait and see.

TeenPlusTwenties · 23/05/2020 15:21

star yes we are getting some support. However what DD really needs is places to open up and to get a bit of normality.

TheYellowOfTheEgg · 24/05/2020 13:08

My year 10 is going back for a week with short days and lots of distancing from 15 June. There has been no mention of what happens after that week. It will be nice for them to see their friends.

A small group of year 10 boys (not my son) have been invited back from 1 June. My son says they were chosen because they have told the teachers about mental health issues.

Hellohah · 24/05/2020 20:09

We have had a questionnaire asking if we're happy to send them back. The plan we've had is each year 10 attends school for a 1-2-1 meeting with a member of the SLT week commencing 8 June.
Week Commencing 15 June the whole year (or whoever sends them) attend. They will be put in bubble classes, everything will be staggered etc...

DS will go back if it happens.

iMatter · 24/05/2020 20:11

Haven't heard anything from school (ds1 y10)

Blubell46 · 25/05/2020 12:40

We have been told that his form tutor will contact him after half term but not to expect him back before the 8th. My concern is public transport.

Xylophonics · 25/05/2020 13:11

We haven't been given the choice, but have had a questionnaire for the DCs to complete and send back re how they feel they are doing. And they have been asked to pick the subjects they want the support with when they attend.

I would send mine back , definitely.
We are lucky in that it's a walk to school.

SeasonFinale · 25/05/2020 18:54

Yes - 90% said they would be returning. The school was geared up to take half year groups y 10 and y 12 back on 1 June to give them all 2 weeks before breaking up on 3 July.

But the 1/4 year groups and 15 June will no doubt change plans and they will only get about 3 days each now!

Bit daft to announce this at half term.

jugglingbeans · 25/05/2020 18:57

Part days won't work for me with working and he doesn't want to go back but will wait and see.

Is this because of problems getting him to school? Presumably a year 10 doesn't need child care unless SEN are involved.

stardustliz · 28/05/2020 09:43

Thanks for replies. I think we will get more detail after half term.

I believe the guidelines are being released today from the government and secondary schools will decide on a plan.

EdithPeston · 28/05/2020 10:31

Our school just send emails saying they're having a think and will let us know. Haven't asked what parents/pupils want.

DC yr10 will go back if they open.

HappySonHappyMum · 28/05/2020 14:44

My DDs school has scheduled 3 x 2 hour sessions for their year 10s before the summer holidays. We have 8 x 30 pupil forms, one form will come in the morning (10-12 to avoid rush hour on public transport) and the next form in the afternoon (1-3) from Monday to Thursday. There will then be a 14 day gap before they have another session to allow for any illness resulting to pass. Each form will be split into 3 x 10 student groups for the length of the session. They won't be following curriculum and will use these sessions for one to one contact with their teachers and to get feedback on the online work they have been set for the entire lockdown period. Online work will continue to be set until the summer break - every day my DD gets work set from her teachers following her timetable, so five 'lessons' as day to do in her own time and submit online. This is a normal comprehensive and I think they've handled the situation so far fantastically.

That's the same as my DCs state comprehensive. It couldn't be better.

katalex · 29/05/2020 13:02

The only thing we've heard from our school is that they agree with the government that it's time to reopen to years 10 and 12. We've had no details of how that's going to work and they haven't asked us if we would be willing to send our year 10 dd in. She will be going in if we get the choice. She's really struggled to engage with the online learning and has pretty much done no work during term 5. The school knows all about her issues though so I'm hoping they'll offer her more sessions than the other students, which the government guidelines seem to suggest could/should happen with anyone who hasn't been able to do the online learning.

I have a Y10 and Y12. They won’t be going back on, unless their one hour F2F can be done via online (Teams). The risk is too great, and I would prefer to see how it all pans out for a September start. I’m eager to get back to work, but I’m more concerned about them going back to school so soon.

AveEldon · 31/05/2020 15:23

Not heard anything from one secondary
The other is expecting Y10 to return from 15 June but only 1 day a week

Bobbybobbins · 31/05/2020 15:33

My school is having year 10 and 12 back from 15th. They will be split into two halves and come in on different days.

katalex · 02/06/2020 11:55

We've just had an update. Years 10 and 12 are going back on 15th June. They are offering 1 full day per week for the year 10s with no more than 45 year 10 students in school at any one time. They will invite anyone who hasn't engaged in the online learning at all to go in every day. Year 12s will get one two-hour session per subject per week. They will go in just before their lesson starts and go home straight after.

1805 · 02/06/2020 22:25

Yep, we have y10 and 12's back on the 15th June. It's a tiny school though, so pupils are full time. Boarding kids back too, but into single rooms.

portico · 03/06/2020 08:39

Must admit I don’t was Y10 and Y12 to go back, but will do if it affects uni applications for Y12, or the ability to help Y10 progress into sixth form. F2F could be done on Teams?!

Looneytune253 · 03/06/2020 08:41

@TheYellowOfTheEgg I would imagine if he's been invited back for the full first week that will be all. There are 4 weeks left then and they're only allowed 25% of the cohort in at the same time so they must be doing a week each.
