I've read through lots of chat re 2019 but can't see a 2020 10/11+ 2020 thread. How are your DS's getting on?

OP posts:

Anno7 we are doing 10+ this year for DS2. DS1 is already at W. I forgot most things but, I remember that the VR test was so long that it seems no one completed it, so your DS should not panic if that is still the case. I think DS1 is just not a very good performer in tests, and when we wrote for T, his marks were just below 70%. W refused to discuss marks. They must have realised the potential, because they took him and now he has consistently been an A student in Maths, in the top 4 of the whole year group and gets on the more challenging Maths programme - to my dismay, because I wonder why he did not do as well in entrance exam so that he gets a scholarship. Confused

Also get there early, because the traffic is mad since different groups are writing at the same time. If you are not early enough you may consider getting dropped of somewhere close by and walking the rest of the way. But I do remember that the boys get spirited away by prefects from the car, so you just drop off, security give you clear directions of where to go in and out.

DS1 top priority was lunch. I think that W generosity in that department swayed it for him. W was his first choice throughout the whole process, but it's apparent that the food signed, sealed and delivered. Grin

Good luck Thursday.

Does anyone remember the drop off procedure for Trinity 10plus ? Do we need to get there early as well.
I’ve heard the 11 plus drop off can be hectic and rushed so just planning ahead .
Thank you all !

Hopefulmum72 · 07/01/2020 12:10

The 11+ drop off today at Twas quite smooth. They split the boys into two starting groups. I think if you get there 15/20 mins early you should be fine but be mindfull of the traffic, as it took us twice the time it would normally today to drive there....

Good luck!

Anno7 · 07/01/2020 14:01

Thanks so much- good luck to your DS2- it all comes down to the day now! Fingers crossed for them all!

chalkyc2 · 07/01/2020 14:31

All done for DS! Now we wait!

Hopefulmum72 · 07/01/2020 14:36

T done. How did your DSs feel about it? trying to get a feel from my child is impossible!

He felt Maths and English were ok but VR was very different from anything he had done before (we did BOND and exampapersplus). Anyone had the same feeling?

Two more days to go!

chalkyc2 · 07/01/2020 14:48

All I have is a text saying apparently he assessed it as 'medium difficulty' via my husband - am at work!

Actually not 'all' done I suppose in that respect - one on Friday and last one on Monday. Roll on Feb....

gingershotting · 07/01/2020 18:07

Hi, anyone did Royal Russel today?

Brrrr10 · 07/01/2020 18:24

It's interesting hearing views about academics and low/high scores. If say - you need at least 60-70% to be considered for an interview - (depending on 10 or 11+) . Isn't it fair to say that it probably comes down to how much prep a boy has done rather than ability? (obvs there will be exceptions to the rule) For example, a state boy with no tutor I imagine wouldn't reach that score. However with practise, they could! So the results isn't necessarily a reflection on how bright a boy is. I think it's more about how much prep they've had the opportunity to do - whether that's via a tutor or not.
I can only speak for my son and I believe if he'd been tutored for months, he'd be getting higher scores on the papers we're doing at home! Do you think almost all the boys have been tutored or what percentage do we think?

jasmine372 · 07/01/2020 18:51

Royal Russell is tomorrow I believe .

Hopefulmum72 · 07/01/2020 19:22

My Ds is doing Royal Russell tomorrow, but I believe some did today. The boys that did Trinity will be doing it tomorrow as Trinity was today....

JustJuice187 · 07/01/2020 20:12

Brrrr10 - definitely think it does come down to practice. Independent schools still fairer than grammars, as they are assessing all round ability. They look at the school report, the interview and the exam as a whole. HTH.

Just a heads up that there are gas works on Nottingham Road near the entrance to Whitgift School. There are traffic lights (some of the time) approximately at the junction with Whitgift Avenue e.g. the traffic lights were not there yesterday but were there this morning. You also can't access Nottingham Road from Whitgift Avenue. This might cause a few more queues than usual so worth setting off in good time for tomorrow's exam and/or being prepared to walk rather than driving into the school - if the latter is necessary, there will be helpers who will take the boys in.

Good luck!

Just got my DS to sleep- he’s so so nervous! I can’t believe that this time tomorrow it’ll be over! Good luck all!

dancingbadger · 09/01/2020 06:12

Good luck everyone sitting W today, and extra luck finding a parking spot Wink I'm looking forward to it being done but I'm also dreading the long wait for phone call/ email etc to see if he's got an interview the whole thing is agonising Confused

champagneandfromage50 · 09/01/2020 07:55

W was quick getting the emails out following the exam. I think our email arrived two to three days after the exam. Good Luck everyone!

Yey22 · 09/01/2020 08:47

They won’t quick last year as they had so many children. It was weeks before some people heard so don’t loose heart. Goodluck everyone x

champagneandfromage50 · 09/01/2020 09:01

Yey22 We were the year before that however your correct they did start sending emails really quick but some did have to wait a week or two

PopGoesTheWeaz · 09/01/2020 14:43

Fingers crossed and all going well and DS is offered any interview, do you know if both parents are expected to attend? I just did a brief scan of past threads and there was a lot of talk, in particular re DC, of "couples" being given an opportunity to question the head.

Yey22 · 09/01/2020 14:57

At DC, we met the head with two other couples at T and W met individually.

gingershotting · 09/01/2020 15:03

good luck to everyone. at W always a poem in english, is that right? I just read on an other thread.

gingershotting · 09/01/2020 15:06

we are doing everything next year and I am already worried when I read all your messages .... sounds all stressful.

champagneandfromage50 · 09/01/2020 15:12

At W my son was interviewed by the head of year and we were seen following that. They asked 'why whitgift'. They will ask your son about that too.

Walkingtheplank · 09/01/2020 15:46

I would flag that we had to wait quite a long time for the interviews. Trinity emailed everyone c.5-6 days after the exam to say whether an Inteview would be forthcoming and then we had another week to wait before the interview Whitgift invited us after several weeks but wise owls here reassured me that the invitation for sports assessments meant he must have scored high enough in the exam.
So interviews might take a while but this doesn't mean the boy has done less well.
