Hello All,

Welcome to thread 6 - results...

Last thread here:

Gcses 2019 support thread 5 http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/secondary/3610608-gcses-2019-support-thread-5

It's been a fantastically supportive set of threads to date with a diverse set of expectations and challenges (for both parents and children).

I expect this thread may be the most emotive for us all (crikey how did the time fly!!)

Good luck everyone Thanks

I keep seeing dd2 running in crying saying 'they are awful' SadSad

I feel like I'm cracking up. A levels, disappointment, clearing for dd1, ill family members, money worries aaaargh. I might have a brandy.

ThelmaDinkley · 21/08/2019 22:04

I need a drink but I’m on bloody antibiotics

overnow · 21/08/2019 22:04

I was on one of these threads last year and just wanted to wish you all very good luck. Hope you all get some sleep. Whatever happens tomorrow tour children are all stars and will forge their path ahead.

Thelma my friends son had a call from his college last week to go on early but I think that was on the morning, I don't think it was the night before. So they had the heads up he'd done well. I'm not sure about schools doing it though.

lightlypoached · 21/08/2019 22:18

Please reassure me that I'm not the only one who genuinely has absolutely no idea what maths to expect for by boy tomorrow? I mean none at all.

Pre-mocks were dire, mocks slightly less so, and the real things ? God only knows.

He's nervous as hell and so am I. Don't remember being this anxious for DD who , despite being much less academic than her brother, did spectacularly well.

Everything crossed for my ever so little but 6 foot tall boy.

And good luck to all of your lovely kids too.

lightlypoached · 21/08/2019 22:18

Marks not maths. Blush

Another one delurking to wish everyone the best of luck for tomorrow. Have a DS about to start Y11 but his school gets them to take Eng Lit and some science modules early so we are just getting a taste of exam and results stress this year. Hats off to all of you supporting and encouraging your DC through it - they are lucky to have you.

ThelmaDinkley · 21/08/2019 22:27

Thanks Frugalkitty I didn’t think schools could do this but obviously they can and do. Good luck to all tomorrow.

No cash for grades here either, although I suppose in a way that is what it is going to be. DS decided last year that he desperately wanted out of his local comp, and so we applied for a highly selective independent sixth form. He has worked extremely hard, for the exams (in his A level subjects) at the sixth form and for the interview in order to get the conditional offer, and throughout the year. I really don't think he could have done any more (I saw one of the whatsapp groups from his school, and they were making fun of how hard he worked!). If he does make the grades (a minimum of six 8s and a minimum of 7 in English) , then there is going to be an eye watering amount of money going to that sixth form (why I have called it on this thread "the dreaded sixth form"). But he really, really does want to go there.
And I too am really worried that after throwing his all at it this year, what if he doesn't make it. Some part of me can really understand the DC who take the attitude that if they don't work, then they can always console themselves with the idea that if they had worked, they could have done better. When they really do work - then it feels like it will be even more devastating if it doesn't pay off.

MaudBaileysGreenTurban · 21/08/2019 23:02

Right, I'm off to bed. See you all tomorrow; fingers crossed for all the DCs on this thread. I hope everyone gets what they need.

Sweet dreams, people Grin

LosingHerMissMarbles · 21/08/2019 23:11

Lovely to read all the thoughts and advice and help on this thread. It's good to know you're not alone. Despite having been through all this before, each time it's different as the DCs are different. Promised myself I wouldn't get as anxious for DS as I was just glad to still have him after his cancer diagnosis, treatment and ongoing issues. But I so want him to do well and get the results he deserves as I have seen him cope so brilliantly and work so hard to catch up and put aside what's happened to him. Anyway, probably too much information. I think it's the anxiety talking.
I hope they all get the results they deserve tomorrow and can move on to the next phase, whatever and wherever that may be.

marmiteloversunite · 21/08/2019 23:16

@lightlypoached I have no idea about marks and I think that is why I am so nervous. School has proved with my older DD that their predicted marks mean nothing so I can't use them as a guide. DD2 was very negative about the whole exam experience so I really don't know what we are walking into tomorrow morning.

Going to try and sleep now.

GOOD LUCK ALL!!!!!

Sososour · 21/08/2019 23:16

Dd has finally gone to bed. Hoping All our DC sleep well . Dd has been wanting company for the last few evenings so we’ve done a lot of series watching and I’ve been trying to keep her calm.
I’m pretty exhausted with it all tbh.

NotSorry · 21/08/2019 23:20

I’ve done the double this year - can’t believe it’s only a week since a-level results - DS2 didn’t quite get what he needed but he’s got a place through clearing and is happy - DS3 doesn’t seem worried about tomorrow at all. My 4th child will be the only one left at school come September 😢

oneteen · 21/08/2019 23:21

Wishing you all your DC luck to tomorrow...

bizzey · 21/08/2019 23:33

Just checking in on the new thread !
Will catch up tomorrow..
Nite nite .

Arewedone · 22/08/2019 00:15

I can’t sleep :( . I know Dd is worried because DS has just sailed through his A levels without any fuss and she wants to do equally well. She has worked really hard this year but these new exams are really hard to gauge. Hoping my phone dies quickly to stop me scrolling.

DeRigueurMortis · 22/08/2019 02:03

Been to bed and got up again as I can't sleep.

Just a short post to wish everyone the best for tomorrow.

For my part we are going to the school and then at DS's request, straight to his grandparents (he's very close to his GF in particular) so I'm unlikely to post again before tomorrow afternoon regardless of results.

Is it true that the students who have done well get invited at 9am and rest at 9:30 for a press pic?

1stevernamechange · 22/08/2019 03:01

I’ve been watching the thread but not posted before. Dd gets her results at 9, I can’t sleep, not heard a sound from her room so I think she must be able to! I’m lying here wide awake!

GloriaSmud · 22/08/2019 03:02

Signing in at this early hour ~ another one who can't sleep.

1stevernamechange · 22/08/2019 03:08

It’s feeling like a long night, isn’t it Gloria ?

GloriaSmud · 22/08/2019 03:19

It is indeed, 1stevernamechange

Trouble is, when I can't sleep, I usually get up for 2 hours and then go back to bed. But I need to be awake around 6.15am tomorrow to get everyone round for getting to school on time to get the results at 8. So the early start is going to leave me knackered tomorrow and I also need to drive DD1 to work (after getting the results) and collect her in the afternoon. I think I'll give it another 1/2 hour then go back to bed.

(I'm also hungry ~ think I might raid the biscuit tin!)

1stevernamechange · 22/08/2019 03:23

I know what you mean, I usually end up getting back to sleep half an hour before I need to get up!
