Fos& Glee thinking of you both tonight. Hope your Dc have a fabulous time. I’m sure they will look amazing! Glee for sure is nerves 😘

Arewedone · 25/06/2019 16:15

Bimkom- we have back much of what we could to school, however the additional expensive books I put on eBay expecting no response and have sold 5 within 2 days !
Our school thankfully has a student run initiative as an alternative to depop that counts to ucas points for selling 2nd clothes!

Arewedone · 25/06/2019 16:16

Sorry grammar rubbish as typing whist talking🙃

Bimkom · 25/06/2019 17:31

Thanks Arewedone. A lot of the books DS has been sorting are not school books but "young adult" fiction, which he has decided he has grown out of. Books like most of the series of the 39 clues, for example, Chris Ryan books , Chris Bradford books, the Hunger games series, the divergent series- oh I don't know what else. He has been a bit heavy handed. One of the books I have rescued is an autographed copy of TJ and the Penalty - one of the series by Theo Walcott. Very influential in getting DS to read, back in the day, so i am not ready to throw these out, even if DS is. Many of them were series that were painstakingly built up. DD has swooped on all the Percy Jackson, but she may well want the Hunger Games series at some later date, so I am reluctant to throw those away. I have a bookcase in the spare room, that I think I will fill with these books and work out what to actually throw away later.

Foslady · 25/06/2019 17:47

Ours is tomorrow Arewedone it’s the manic night tonight!
Hope yours has a great time Glee

Arewedone · 25/06/2019 18:04

Bimkom- sounds same!! Dd started re reading hunger games series ! Yes divergent and Percy Jackson not ready to give up! Did manage to offload horrible history series

Iambuffy · 25/06/2019 19:00

binkom when you say "throw away" do you mean donate?

glee hope DD has an amazing night!

Binkom - happy sorting... we still have a drawer full of proper childrens books under the spare bed - am not sure I'll ever be getting rid of those!

Second day of work experience done and DD is a bit more lively tonight - its 8.20 and currently no sign of falling asleep on the sofa! Am actually quite impressed how much she appears to be enjoying work experience - she's such an anxious sort and this is pushing her boundaries so need to remind her how much this will do for her confidence..

KittyMcKitty · 25/06/2019 22:22

Glee hope your dd has a great night. Ds has been to pre’s and prom and is on his way to the after party and seems to be having fun.

myrtleWilson · 25/06/2019 22:37

ah glad that DS is having a great time kitty

gleegeek · 26/06/2019 00:07

All lovely here. Dd currently at after prom - watching a film in a tent in friend's garden. Phew!
Hopefully photo attached - dd on the right Smile

Kitty glad ds has had a good time. It's all a huge build up to a relatively short event 😂

marmiteloversunite · 26/06/2019 00:46

Glee she looks gorgeous. Hope she has a great time! I was quite relieved when it was all over. There were a lot of preparations last week. Work experience this week seems easy in comparison!

gleegeek · 26/06/2019 00:48

Thank you! Just picked her up - she's had a fantastic night with just a few panicky moments. College trial day tomorrow😂
Night all!

Arewedone · 26/06/2019 01:23

Glee - stunning, beautiful hair! Great to hear it all went well in the end Smile lovely to end he year on a high note!
Kitty- hope DS survives without a hangover, sounds like he’s had a blast Smile
Myrtle - great Dd enjoying it- what is she doing??

KittyMcKitty · 26/06/2019 02:44

Glee your dd looks fab pleased she had good time.

Ds home after the 10 hour party marathon and seems to have had a great time (and remarkably sober).

Bimkom · 26/06/2019 07:40

lamduffy - yes I do mean donate, probably the local charity shop, although I will check with some friends who have DC younger than mine if they want them. But even that I am reluctant to do at this stage. I have kept a whole bunch of the "key" proper children's books too. The ones they loved and really worked. DS in particular, was (wouldn't think it now) initially a very reluctant reader, took quite a lot of work to get him switched onto books. We experimented very widely to try and get him enthusiastic about it.

Phew!😁 thought so!

I got all sweaty thinking about books being chucked away! 🤣

Ds1 and I are off to the cinema today .

Iambuffy · 26/06/2019 08:47

Ds1 was the same binkom
I almost Wentworth joy when he picked up a book of his own free will!!
For ds it was the how.to train.your dragon books that got him reading.

For my DS it was the Beast Quest books, followed by (he would hate me to mention it) the Rainbow Fairies. For ages, even after we had got him to read, and he would devour the latest in whatever series he was reading, he wouldn't try anything new, which is why Beast Quest and the Rainbow Fairies were such a godsend, as they kept bringing out more and more books, and once it was tried and tested series he was OK, he felt confident with the format, even if it seemed to me that they were completely formulaic and boring. Then we had the challenge of introducing more and diverse reading, but still tended towards books that had series, as it was always getting him on to the first of a series that was the big stumbling block, and once one was acceptable, the rest followed. the TJ books were great as they were about football. Rangers Apprentice and Young Samurai were also key developmental stages. Amazing that this is the boy who is now experimenting with real literature (one group of his friends that he knows from out of school have been recommending books like The Colour Purple and Catch 22, and he asked me for Animal Farm and Lord of the Flies) and is now seriously reading medical books such as Gene and Do No Harm, not to mention This is Going to Hurt and When Breath becomes Air. It was such a battle in those days, which is why I have so many of these books. Getting him to go to a library was adding an extra burden on the process (we did go, and DD always found a lot to take home, but he often struggled), so I would scour charity shops for books to try. The first Young Samarai came that way, and I then ended up getting the rest on ebay. Very hard for me to give them away.

6th form taster sessions/induction day yesterday. It's becoming apparent that it's going to cost substantially more to clothe DC for 6th form than I first thought. Shoes in particular, as just one pair of school shoes worn day in day out will need to be replaced by possibly 3 pairs to go with different "office wear" outfits.

DC's weekly allowance bank transfer will build up over the next 10 weeks as almost no bus fares/occasional lunches to pay for so I'm thinking of saying they need to contribute half although I know they were hoping to use it for increased leisure activities.

They have been promised a major 'phone upgrade as a reward for effort but I've already budgeted for that.

Apparently books like these are being recommended to prevent too much slippage over the 10 weeks until term starts and to make sure they can hit the ground running in September (DC attend a pushy academic school). Just when I thought spending on such books was over until A' Level exam time !

Anyone else's school pushing these sort of books/low level self study over the summer ?
