Why do people openly criticise decisions to send your kids to a private school?

I sent my Son to a private school (Glasgow) last year for various reasons and it's working out really well. There is the cost but we just do without expensive holidays etc. I can't think of a better gift for my children than a good education. I was so surprised at how offended people get when they ask which school he attends. They think it's ok to criticise you openly and make bitchy comments here and there. Surely how you spend your own money is your own business. Anyone else have this experience?

@mindgoinground12 you are 100% right it's down to personal choice. I dont mind constructive criticism and debate and have taken quite a few points on board. Healthy debate is good. What I have objected to on here are trolls going off subject and name calling and bullying etc. I've noticed the same people do it on other threads though so that's fine and I haven't taken it personally. A lot of the comments have now been removed by admin thankfully.

@Ruffina - yes. I would rather spend my money on moving home to an area with good schools than on private education.

That’s fine. It’s your choice to make, of course. But it undermines any argument against fee paying education on the ground of privilege.

My kids 6th form college had sailing (dinghy and yacht), skiing and equestrian teams
but that is because state schools are so rough Grin

(Actually, from what I've heard, the offering of Mandarin in UK may already have peaked and is likely to decline. A bit like how Russian briefly became popular when I was at school. Mainly because Mandarin is bloody difficult.)

You are fantastic at missing the point, Ruffina.

Your point seems to be: a knowledge of Latin is posh; that’s why private schools teach it; posh people exclude others because they don’t know Latin; some (general) employers exclude applicants because they don’t know Latin.

I’m saying that’s bullshit.

Latin is taught at some schools and studied at many universities because it’s an academic discipline.

Yep, definitely missed the point 🤦🏼‍♀️

DreamOnandOnRon · 29/12/2018 15:05

@scotmum1977 - quite so, I would never openly criticise someone for their choice. I would be judging internally though Wink

TalkinPeace · 29/12/2018 15:06

Latin Declensions are so important

scotmum1977 · 29/12/2018 15:07

@DreamOnandOnRon lol and I have no issue with judging internally so it would be fine Smile

IDontNeed

You don’t seem to know what your point is.

Have a good think and try again.

In the words of Colin Firth
Manners maketh man
Private school can instil good manners

Lol, you are very funny Ruffina 👌🏼

Ruffina · 29/12/2018 15:25

Oh by the way Talkin, after you apologised for mixing me up with another poster I should have come back and said ‘no problem, it’s nothing’. (I didn’t literally mean that you’d made up my comment; that would have been impolite.)

flossietoot · 29/12/2018 15:25

What I find really sad, is that I always wondered how it was the Tory government managed to get through their welfare reform measures and see child poverty levels soar while so many stood back and did nothing. The statistics I provided about what life is like for many in Glasgow were laughed at and dismissed and mocked by Scotmum. Now I know why the measures go ahead unchallenged. So so sad.

Ruffina · 29/12/2018 15:27

Well thank you, IDont

You’re funny too. In your own way.

TalkinPeace · 29/12/2018 15:27

Ruffina
I was so chuffed at being called weird I did not even notice Smile

IDontNeedNoPyjamas · 29/12/2018 15:29

Oh by the way Talkin, after you apologised for mixing me up with another poster

I don’t believe I got anyone mixed up. It would be impossible to confuse you with anyone else I’m sure 😘

Ruffina · 29/12/2018 15:29

Not by me!

IDontNeedNoPyjamas · 29/12/2018 15:30

Oh now I did get confused 🤣
