I've definitely lost perspective regarding the GCSEs. I more or less managed to forget about them in July, or at least think they were so far into the future, it was only mildly interesting to realise that someone could have actually been marking them right at that moment.
I want to enjoy what's left of the summer though with DS chilled and no worries. So if they could just let him know the results that are probably already calculated, it would be a great help!

I think dd is worrying about some of her results. She talked about her English Lang tonight. The exam she freaked out in a little because of the stroke question.

I feel like our whole lives are on hold at the moment. We can’t plan anything. Dh has been a bit down today.

mmzz · 06/08/2018 04:41

AH will the upcoming tests give your DH some answers or is it just a case of wait and see?

Oddsocks15 · 06/08/2018 07:15

Alex it’s frustrating that we have to wait sooooo long for results day. The worry of exams on top of your DH Flowers

JufusMum · 06/08/2018 09:32

Every time I think about results day I feel sick. Probably shouldn't do this but I am going to put here what I would be happy with as a minimum. Not what DD would be happy with at all. I think she has pushed results to the back of her mind. We had a dance competition yesterday for the first time in four weeks and it was great to see DD having fun with her friends.

English Literature - got a 5 already in Year 10
English Language - 6
Maths - 5
German - 5
Science Combined - 5/5
Geography - 6
RE - 7
Drama - 5

Let's see how this looks on results day - but this would be enough to get into first choice Sixth Form.

LooseAtTheSeams · 06/08/2018 10:27

Jufus those are good if they're the minimum - they would get DS into his first choice 6th form as well. This means DS is relaxed at the moment but he does need good results in maths and English to be sure of the psychology A level. Also he needs a good result in maths or there isn't any point in doing maths A level!

AlexanderHamilton · 06/08/2018 10:51

I’d be happy with the following Dd would like what’s in brackets

English Lit 7/8 (8/9)
English Lang 7 (8)
Maths 7 (7/8)
Biology 6 (7)
Chemistry 6 (7)
Physics 6 (7)
Music 7 (7/8)
RS 8 (9)
French 6 (7)

mmzz · 06/08/2018 11:01

I think I have ascending levels of what it would take to make me happy (or at least it could be worse):
There’s the bare minimum to go to the second choice 6th form and do the subjects DS wants:
2 x level 4
1x 7 for maths
2 x 6 for English and a science
Then there’s the bare minimum for the first choice sixth form:
3 x level 5 including English
1 x level 8 for maths
1 x level 7 for Physics
Then there is what it will take for DS not to despair about himself and feel like all his hard work is wasted:
1 x level 9 for maths
3 x level 8s
4 x level 7s
1 x level 6s (can’t count on an A for English Lit or Geography)

Ideally, I’d like 8s and 9s with a 7 for English Lit but that’s not likely.

ReservoirDogs · 06/08/2018 13:32

Oqqer - I am not so brave as to predict (or say what I hope for).

He needs 7 x grade 7 or As plus a 6 (or B) to stay on to School 6th Form and predicted higher so hope will be ok.

He wants an 8/9 in his A level subjects Maths, History, Geography (also doing Economics but a new subject).

JugglingFromHereToThere · 06/08/2018 13:32

Think I'll be very happy with 6's, extra pleased with anything higher, maths, physics, drama and music may be the stronger ones.

5's will be OK but not exciting! Kind of resigned to a 4 or even 3 in French, obviously a 4 is worth hoping for!

Really hoping he gets the 7 at 5+ and the 3 at 6+ that he needs, and in the right subjects. He should really be performing at around a grade or so higher than this, and if I remember right predictions were mostly at the 6/7 boundary. But close enough for us to consider what our plan B would be!

Thanks for suggestion of going into school on the 16th or17th?, when staff are around for A level results. That seems a good way to catch someone and talk over arrangements for results day the following week ( as DS will be away on a music tour with his band)

HesMyLobster · 06/08/2018 14:38

I just hope DD gets the results she deserves, she worked so hard and I just want her results to reflect that.
I know she'll be a bit disappointed with anything less than a 6, and in theory she should manage that in all subjects.
Realistically though, who knows? As long as she gets the 6 passes she needs for 6th form that's all that matters. And repeat . . .
(My mantra for the next 2 1/2 weeks!)

LineRunner · 06/08/2018 14:45

Hello all, I've been lurking on here. Threads like this kept me sane in previous years!

My ex's DD, lovely girl, is waiting for the result of her 5th go at GCSE maths.

I so, so want her to pass.

Cblue · 06/08/2018 15:06

DD needs pretty much the same results as @ReservoirDogs

...so it will be a nail biting wait.

Backup SFC has very low minimum- 5 at level 4 and a 6 in A Level subjects to do A Levels or lower for BTECs.

So she will have somewhere to go but it will be disappointing for her after all the hard work.

I am practicing my 'that's a brilliant result and exactly what you need' face - although it currently looks more like a grimace so a bit more practice is required!!!

PeggySchuylar · 06/08/2018 15:33

One of my concerns is that if DD does really well I will wobble avout whether she should do A levels rather than a BTEC.

I will have to keep saying to myself
No A levels
No A levels Confused

PeggySchuylar · 06/08/2018 15:34

Line fingers crossed for her

mmzz · 06/08/2018 15:48

LineRunner that must be so frustrating for her. She's doing well to keep on trying.
Is she allowed to sit exams for the old maths gcse specification or did she have to do the new one this time?

OP posts:
LineRunner · 06/08/2018 16:14

Thanks, Peggy and mmzz I believe she's taken the new one.

This is her last try, she says. She's shown resilience, I'll give her that!

Good luck to all the DC, they go through so much pressure and stress. Bless 'em.

KickBishopBrennanUpTheArse · 06/08/2018 16:19

DD was talking about this in the car on the way to a family event this weekend.

These are her predictions (with outside chances in brackets)

Maths 8 (9)
Computer science 7 (8)
Geography 7 (8)
Physics 6 (7)
Chemistry 6 (7)
Biology 5 (6)
German 5 (6)
English Language 4 (5)
English Lit 5 (6)
RS 4 (5)

She's fairly confident she'll get the first grade unless the mark scheme throws up any curve balls. It would be nice if a couple of the grades in brackets crept in.

The one she cares most about is English Language. She thinks she will retake if she gets a 4. I really hope she doesn't need to.

LooseAtTheSeams · 06/08/2018 16:38

LineRunner she’s amazing - wishing her all the very best! Star

Stickerrocks · 06/08/2018 17:14

Linerunner she is not alone. I think my DN is resitting for the 5th time. He really needs a grade 4, because he has a job lined up as a TA in a special needs school, but he panics each time he does it. This time he was in a room with an invigilator, as he gets extra time. When they got to the final paper with time to spare, he simply said to the invigilator that they may as well finish early as he was wasting his time and her time by sitting there.

Oddsocks15 · 06/08/2018 17:17

Sorry if this question has been asked but what does it mean if science result is 5/5? Why not 5 !!

Not brave enough to call DD results as she gave no feedback. Hoping for a pass in English and high enough grades in maths and Geography so she can take them in a level and a high enough overall score for entry into 6th form. She won’t discuss a plan b so here’s hoping

mmzz · 06/08/2018 17:25

Double science is worth two GCSEs, so 5-5 means you have two GCSEs at level 5. You can't get 4-6 etc.

Triple science is three separate GCSEs so you could get 3 different levels (one for Physics, a different one for Chemistry and another one for Biology).

OP posts:
mmzz · 06/08/2018 17:27

Stickerrocks that's not good. What will he do if he doesn't get the grade he needs?

OP posts:
Stickerrocks · 06/08/2018 17:27

Thank goodness for triple, as it seems really unfair to have (say) a 7, 5, 5 for individual subjects dragged down to a 5 overall.

Oratory1 · 06/08/2018 17:31

Very best of luck Line. Kick bishop - if you replace geography with further maths and German with history those grades are exactly what I am guessing at for my ds. I think he may be expecting some if the brackets but I’m expecting the lower one - but in reality as long as he gets the 4 in English and 7/8 in maths he should be ok.

He definitely wouldn’t retake English if he got a 4 but there is a chance he may have to if he gets a 3. He’s a lot more confident with the eng lit so that may count ? I meant to look it up
