Hampton 10+ exam

shoegal100 · 01/07/2018 09:49

Hello! Our DS is sitting the Hampton 10+ in November and it would be really helpful to hear about others’ experiences and also what prep was undertaken. DS is at a state school; a bright boy who has consistently been top of his class. I know he has a good shot at the 10+ but there are a lot of variables such as performance on the day and performance of the other children sitting the exam ... he’s currently being tutored once a week for exam technique more than anything and we are doing 1 or 2 practice papers/tutor homework a week with a view to ramping up a little in the autumn. We are playing it as low stakes/practice run for the 11+ But it would be interesting to hear from those with DS that have been through it. Thanks so much.

Doesn't sound that " low key", tbh 😜. There's another thread on here already.

shoegal100 · 01/07/2018 11:49

Thx Rioiscalling... we are definitely keeping it low key in terms of how we talk about etc 😉. I’ll look for the other thread!

See my post on the other thread, there are only 20 spaces and all the boys sitting are bright, top of their class & being tutored. Just use the experience as practice for the 11+ which you have to sit anyway.

Teddyking1 · 01/07/2018 13:36

Shoegal 100 I have sent you a pm as we have just been through this

onlyhearsay · 10/11/2018 17:00

Did anyone on here sit the Hampton 10+ this morning?? DS said the maths was hard! Don't hold out much hope, but hopefully the feedback is good.

How did everyone else get on?

shoegal100 · 11/11/2018 11:19

Hello onlyhearsay! Yes we sat it. Gosh it’s good to hear your DS found the maths hard! Our DS ran out of time but thinks what he answered was correct. Answered 18 out of 25 I think. Found the comprehension and VR hard. Composition was ok. I’m managing my expectations now! If nothing else we’ll get feedback! Overall he felt it went ‘ok’. We’ll see

Hi Shoegal100, that sounds positive. Wishing your DS lots of luck.

DS is normally strong at maths, so think threw him he couldn't answer some questions. Still, really proud of him. Such a tough thing to sit an exam like that at 9 years old! Hoping we get useful feedback and he will auto get registered for 11+, so that's good.

Apparently, around 250 boys sat the exam yesterday!

shoegal100 · 11/11/2018 13:31

250 wow! I really need to manage my expectations! Yes, our DS's strong point is maths too. In fairness I think he found the questions ok but simply ran out of time which is a shame.

I completely agree - such a tough exam to sit at a tender age. We're very proud he did it and took it all in his stride. And yes, feedback will be useful so we're well armed for the 11+! Best of luck to you too. Happy to share any news we receive.

Hi Teddyking,

I would love to know if you are able to advise on what material was used for the prep? I’m going to start the prep now for 11+ entrance. Would appreciate any guidance as it’s all new to me as it’s my first child. Thanks in advance

Ks2yr5 · 13/11/2018 23:21

Hi shoegal100

Good luck and well done to all the boys. They sure are at such a tender age. My son had similar sentiments as your DS.

He let his nerves get the better of him during the math paper. He didn’t finish Math or his English paper. May I ask if the boys were meant to complete both these papers? What topics were covered in the math paper... there were no ratios, percentages, decimals or time questions on there?? Just wanted to know if he is right or totally missed these out 🙈.. such an awful feeling to not know.

I’d be very grateful if you could let me know what study materials to use for the 11+ prep please. I’d like to start preparing soon. Thanks in advance

shoegal100 · 14/11/2018 10:35

Hi Ks2yr5

It's comforting to know that alot of the boys found the paper tough!

For maths they were definitely not expected to complete the paper, no. I believe they were told that by the HM in the hall before they went off into their groups, or the invigilator said it. Also, a thread on here mentioned that a successful boy's parents were told (after accepting the 10+ place) that the maths paper was impossible to finish in the given time - apparently! I was surprised too that there were no specific ratio, percentages, decimals, time, data table questions! Or fractions I think - they really did seem to be mostly word-based problems. So no, I don't think your DS missed these out! Wink

With English - I'm not sure if they were expected to finish. I just know that it seemed more difficult than expected.

As for prep for the 11+, we are taking a break from it all now as he worked so hard these last few months. But in the new year we'll be picking up the Bonds books again and the CGP books (all available on amazon/whsmith) which are more challenging.

Good luck!

I got nothing from my DS in terms of feedback on maths questions. He said he couldn't remember! Mind you, it was the first paper.

Interviews are a week today, I think (?) so successful candidates should be finding out soon.

Be good to hear from anyone who has heard and got an interview so we don't have to wait to hear!

Teacakesandcoffee01 · 14/11/2018 19:28

"Ks2yr5" do give your ds a break between now and the Spring. I've been thru entrance exams with dc at 11 twice and KGS 10 plus and the run from late Autumn to mid Feb in Year 6 is exhausting for all. If you have already covered the KS2 eng & maths national curriculum there isn't much further to go. Focus on exam technique and extending vocabulary by using a good reading list. The bottom line is that the independent schools write exams to attract naturally bright children from both the state & private sector and they have a way of finding them amongst the hundreds of applicants. Good luck with the coming week & take any feedback you get onboard as it may be invaluable in making 11 plus school selections.

Ks2yr5 · 14/11/2018 19:31

Yes indeed.... Hopefully someone who does receive any correspondence from the school could reply on here and let us parents know. I reckon by Friday 🤓

Ks2yr5 · 14/11/2018 19:42

@teacakesamdcoffee01
Thank you 🙏🏻
Appreciate your advice. My DS has worked incredibly hard past couple of months and now wishes to have the evening off after all that the hard work he put in. I’ll let him have a break for now and perhaps just concentrate on building his vocabulary and read more.

shoegal100 · 14/11/2018 19:46

Sound advice teacakes.

Yes, anyone who would be happy to share if the receive ‘the’ letter ... be so kind as to put us out of our misery 😉

Ps onlyhearsay... my DS said the same about specifics... can’t remember! He says that when I ask him what he had for lunch 😂 think it’s a boy thing!

Grin

I wonder if interview confirmation by email or post? Must be email with such a tight turnaround, right?

onlyhearsay · 14/11/2018 21:42

Ps. My DS wasn't told to expect not to finish the maths. Poor thing - no wonder he was anxious when he came out! Horrid thing to have to go through...

I know interviews are a good way of assessing fit in terms of the school, but I would find a rejection after interview really really hard to take!

onlyhearsay · 14/11/2018 21:45

Btw, ks2Yr5, "the evening off"?!

ShockConfusedShock

Ks2yr5 · 14/11/2018 22:05

🙈🙈gosh I meant to say evenings off 🙈🙈

onlyhearsay · 14/11/2018 22:25

I did wonder 😆

shoegal100 · 14/11/2018 22:31

That made me laugh onlyhearsay! Evening off! I was going to say you should set yourself up as an 11+ tutor ks2yr5 😂 sounds like you’d make a shed load of money lol.

Mmm I was going by what a friend said to me re the maths paper... Chinese whispers eh!

I totally agree with you on the interviews onlyhearsay. Harder to take a rejection after that. But I think look it as ‘not quite ready’ maybe.

Email or post... could be either I guess.

Hello,

🚨FYI I contacted the school - the email with the results are being sent out this afternoon. Wishing you all the best of luck 🙏🏻

onlyhearsay · 15/11/2018 12:14

Thanks. KS2Yr5. Blimey!! Good luck to you all. I'm not expecting anything, but good to know either way, then can look ahead!

Did they say how / when feedback would be given?
