Sorry mmzz should have put the worked example in! Here’s what Ofqual said
Imagine that the proportion of students who have achieved at least the minimum number of marks required for a grade 7 in a particular subject is 19%. Take that 19% and divide it in half, which gives you 9.5%. Then add 7 to that figure, giving you 16.5%. Go back to the original percentage of students achieving grade 7 and above and work out 16.5% of that 19%, which is 3.135%. Identify the mark on the qualification level mark distribution that is closest to that figure, and that will be the grade 9 boundary. The grade 8 boundary will be set halfway between the grade boundary marks for 7 and 9.

Stickerrocks · 11/06/2018 21:11

I think it translates as 17% of the 20% grade 7 and above, so the top 3.4% of everyone who took the exam.

Stickerrocks · 11/06/2018 21:11

Cross post. I believe I'm right - can I have a grade 9?

AlexanderHamilton · 11/06/2018 21:12

Is it chemistry or maths tomorrow folks?

Stickerrocks · 11/06/2018 21:12

Maths.

beenrumbled · 11/06/2018 21:18

Maths here

EdwinaLIzzard · 11/06/2018 21:19

You are a very wonderful lot, I have lurked in the background and I really don't think I could have maintained my sanity without your input - thank you, thank you , thank you

So, this s usL

DC doing GCSEs: DD
Other DC: None , there is just the two of us
A level intentions: English Lit. Classics and Drama (she's a drama queen!!)
Current school:Private independent
Sixth form:
__Private Independant - fingers crossed
SEN:__None
Other info:__Sweet natured, kind to all and very lacking in convidence

EdwinaLIzzard · 11/06/2018 21:26

And, of course, I need to attend additional classes for my spelling and grammar!!

My DD is genuinely a very lovely girl and I just hope she can achieve what she needs, but if she doesn't, there is always a Plan B. Everyone on this thread and those before have been so supportive, offering excellent advice and help.

I just hope we can move forward together to AS and A2 - you are a lovely bunch Flowers

KickBishopBrennanUpTheArse · 11/06/2018 21:27

Noble while you're here I have a question.

Have you noticed that it's less of a step up to A level for this current y12 having done the new 9-1 GCSE?

DD finds maths easy at the moment and has barely had to break a sweat but everyone keeps saying it will be different at A level. I'm not sure she'll quite get the 9 on the back of no work but she is a fairly secure level 8. Do you find those who have coasted struggle at A level?

mmzz · 11/06/2018 21:29

Since tomorrow is one of the days that every DC has a maths exam is that right?), how long will it take this thread to fill up?

OP posts:
Stickerrocks · 11/06/2018 21:38

mmzz It depends when you start the new one & fill up the old one with dots! This probably means we will need a new name for thread 13, which hopefully won't be unlucky for any of ours.

sandybayley · 11/06/2018 21:39

Checking in!

DS1 doing (mainly) iGCSE

DD (Year 9) and DS2 (Year 8)

School - Selective Independent (Boys)

6th Form - Staying where he is

A Levels - Maths, Chemistry, Physics and History. The school expect everyone to do 4.

SEN - no

Other info - cricketer, lover of space and owner of the most enormous appetite in the world (12X potato waffle snacks). Thinking about chemistry or chemical engineering at uni but might throw in a curve ball and go for history or politics. He's a great debater / v argumentative 😬

Last exam - Ad Maths (FSMQ) on Tues 19th.

sandybayley · 11/06/2018 21:41

No exams for DS1 tomorrow. Chemistry on Wednesday and Physics on Friday. Only 2 papers for iGCSE maths.

Oddsocks15 · 11/06/2018 21:47

Interested to read what Noble reply is to your question Bishop, my DD is coasting Maths as her strongest subject.

Noble thanks for your reply re: FM. Makes perfect sense. As far as school are concerned her choices are Maths, Geography and IT but she wants to switch IT to FM or Biology (which she won't have the entry requirements to do as she is sitting foundation science, but that is another story) Regarding a 4th option, she is limited as she either didn't do subject at GCSE or won't get high enough grade to enter or she doesn't want to do any "new" subjects..... Already mentioned she has coasted maths, so will have to see come results day....

mmzz · 11/06/2018 21:52

Stickerrocks I only did that because I thought you had other stuff to deal with, and I knew I would be busy for a couple of hours. Even then, I only meant to have it ready but everyone started using it, so I closed the first one to avoid confusion.

DC doing GCSES = DD
Other DC = DS yr 8
A level intentions = School think History, Chemistry, Maths and Physics she now thinks just three History, Chemistry, Maths or Physics
Current school = local state comp
Sixth Form = as above
SEN = none
Other info = Would get level 9 in Marvel, Netflix and Love Island exams. Amazingly asked to do NCS this summer (she’s not really a joiner!). No firm ideas on what to do at Uni, her passion is History but she seems to be erring towards an engineering degree - lots of research to do!
Last Exam = AQA Physics, Friday

Oratory1 · 11/06/2018 21:55

Oh and last exam physics on Friday - or FM next Thursday if he can convince me he has a good chance of c or above after some past papers at the weekend and if he s not decided he s had enough by Friday !!

Really surprised he seems so up for extra work (doesn’t need FM as he ll have 9 without it). Can’t decide if it’s because he s discovered he s actually quite good st something for the first time in his life - or because a certain girl is doing FM 😉😉)

Oratory1 · 11/06/2018 21:57

Edexcel IGCSE is only two papers so no maths for us tomorrow - needs to revise some chemistry, that’s the exam he has definitely revised the least for so far

BlueBelle123 · 11/06/2018 21:58

Oddsock as your DD had originally thought about IT, what about computing goes very well with maths and you don't need the GCSE? - should say IT and computing are different but.......

BlueBelle123 · 11/06/2018 22:02

The only thing I really must insist on is that thread 13 is filled up before results day.........not that I'm superstitious or anything but lets not take any chances.............Smile

PeggySchuylar · 11/06/2018 22:04

I’m sat at the table with DD who having worked erratically through the year, is now intent on writing the perfect essay on how the lives of black Americans have changed between 1930 and 2000.

We are both so tired. She knows a lot. Let’s hope she can get the right bits out of her head, down her arm, out of her pen and onto the paper.

She tells me her favourite TV programme is called Brooklyn 99 not 911. Blush She also likes izombie.

Stickerrocks · 11/06/2018 22:09

Bluebelle I doubt if it will be an issue. We still have proms, 6th form taster days, holidays and a pup to fill up any excess space.

Stickerrocks · 11/06/2018 22:11

Peggy is that an iGCSE history paper? Please tell me we haven't forgotten a bog standard GCSE one!

BlueBelle123 · 11/06/2018 22:14

DS has History Edexcel GCSE tomorrow, there were 3 papers.

Sostenueto · 11/06/2018 22:19

Just maths tomorrow for dgd. Not a lot of revision done tonight she is very tired. Let's hope paper on what she knowsHmm
