Chinese finished! And guess what? It 'went well!' Hmm

I've been trying to get DS3 to watch Mr Bruff's paper 1 tips, hopefully by the end of the evening. It's R and J and The Sign of the Four tomorrow for him.

His school have a leavers' card that they have to get signed off by each teacher as they return text books etc. But they haven't issued it yet. So DS3 has now handed back his CS and Chinese books but has to get those teachers' signatures on his card at some point, hoping they remember he has already returned his books. They seem rather disorganised this year. I'm sure it ran more smoothly with DS1 and 2.

DS has learnt the translations to all his set Latin texts -Druids, Boudica and Aenied - by heart word by word. So I'm sooo relieved he doesn't have to learn any English poems by heart!!!

Oratory1 · 21/05/2018 17:05

Glad things going well so far this week - long may it continue. Agree Teenmum - need to pass English, and Maths and physics may be A levels so a light but v important week.

sandybayley · 21/05/2018 17:25

@brainmelt - DS1 did the same for his Latin. He says it was the only way but it did seem like a lot to learn. I only hope he can now erase those memories and fill them with more stuff that he now needs.

On the marmite sandwiches, I hate them as well. But they are the only sandwich that all 3 DC will eat so they are a mainstay of picnic lunches in the Sandybayley household.

mmzz · 21/05/2018 17:29

I hadn't thought of it that way but this week is packed full of things DS needs to meet the entry requirements for the selective sixth form : maths, physics and English.

Saying that I don't know what they mean by "English". Maybe it's English lit not English Lang?

OP posts:
sandybayley · 21/05/2018 17:30

@mmzz - if 'English' is a requirement then I'd be expect it to be English Language.

brainmelt · 21/05/2018 17:34

Glad to hear DC did fine today in their exams
Indeed sost it looks like it was an ok day for everyone Star

EllenJanethickerknickers · 21/05/2018 17:36

Sixth forms and colleges around here allow either language or literature to fulfill the English requirement.

brainmelt · 21/05/2018 17:36

sandy I am glad to hear that because I doubted whether it was necessary. Thanks for putting my mind at rest.

mmzz · 21/05/2018 17:37

Does anyone else suffer from the phenomenon where their stress levels are inversely proportional to their DC's at dawn time?!
Ds is currently haphazardly revising R&J. I asked him if he's ready for Jekyl and Hyde and he replied that I should pass him the revision guide and he'll decide which is of most benefit. Then I am about geography - also tomorrow- and he says he'll look over the case studies once he finished with English. By now I'm beginning to hyperventilate, so I ask him about how well he knows specific hurricanes and he caught days "Oh yeah, I might as well look at that too". He's completely relaxed, meanwhile I've had to leave the room before I pass my mounting anxiety into him!

Dd has English lit tomorrow and Friday, business studies and physics Weds, maths and the third Re Thurs.
Busy week.
She's cross because I made her stop watching crap telly to revise. Must be feeling better.
:)

TheSecondOfHerName · 21/05/2018 17:41

Welcome to farangatang

DS2 has both morning and afternoon exams tomorrow; sending him in with a pasta salad do we don't have a repeat of last Thursday's unplanned fast.

JugglingFromHereToThere · 21/05/2018 17:49

Hi all, I've recently been more on the first year of university thread talking about DD, but remember I started with those folks round about GCSE's and realising maybe I could do with some focus and support on DS and his GCSE's.
Last week wasn't too bad and we ticked off French, RS, and Drama.
Tomorrow he has the double whammy of English Lit and Geography.
Both things he probably could have revised more thoroughly for.
So hoping he puts in a decent last evening of effort for these tonight..
Thinking a few quotations and a few Geog facts would be worth knowing to help things along!

Anyone here with younger sibs who recognises me from going through it all before about three years ago?!

Sostenueto · 21/05/2018 18:02

Omg! We have meltdown nowShock am outside with puppy trying to avoid one big tantrum! I cannot help the amount they have to know. I wish in a way I intervened more during revision instead of leaving dgd to it. But what could I do? I can't learn it for her. Don't know if my nerves will last out another 3-4 weeks! I need a very stiff drink!Wine

Sostenueto · 21/05/2018 18:06

I can confirm its English language in dgds school for sixth form not English literature. They seem to think if you get a 5 in language then your capable of a 5 in literatureHmm

JufusMum · 21/05/2018 18:07

Rushed home from work to get DD to dance class to be told "I'm not going, I'm revising Geography".
DD NEVER misses dance class. This must be seriousShock

mmzz · 21/05/2018 18:09

It looks like we are having exact opposite experiences, Sost! I know what I would do in your shoes - go back in and give a pep talk about all the revision she has done, get excellent memory and how seven if she doesn't think she knows it now, it is in her brain and it will be ready and waiting for her when she needs the facts she had learned tomorrow

OP posts:
Sostenueto · 21/05/2018 18:09

mmzz the more dgd says oh I need to go over this, that and the other, the more I am worried. That's what tantrums about. And there's me thinking all is well.Angry
She's stormed off into bedroom but she cannot revise much more she's been going since 8 am! If she don't blooming well know it now.........I HATE GOVE!Angry

Sostenueto · 21/05/2018 18:11

Now throwing my hat in first........

mmzz · 21/05/2018 18:12

You keep mentioning, Gove, Sost and I'll be honest, i don't understand. What has he done that's causing your DGD problems she wouldn't otherwise have?

OP posts:
JugglingFromHereToThere · 21/05/2018 18:23

mmzz, I can relate to your saying that "he is completely relaxed" Was thinking my DS taking things in his stride quite well - though he did say this afternoon that he felt sick as so much to know - I think tomorrow's two make for one of his more challenging days, with the engine lit and geog.

Cherryburn · 21/05/2018 18:27

Oh dear sost. She'll know more than she thinks but I don't suppose you'll convince her of that while she's in a state. Hope she calms down soon.

mmzz I've realised that my stress levels are highest for the subjects I know least about (Geography) or which I can't check against a mark scheme (English Lit). I am totally clueless about Geography having dropped it as soon as I could, and I feel like I'm going into an exam unprepared tomorrow! English was my degree subject but I can't see into DS's head to see how much he knows, it's not like science/maths papers which you can mark with the mark scheme and get an immediate picture of where they're at.

That said, DS has just talked through two of his poems with me and I was amazed by how responsive he was to the language. I think (hope) they know more than we think they do.

EllenJanethickerknickers · 21/05/2018 18:29

mmzz, the new, harder, more like O levels with lots more facts to be memorised, GCSEs were the bastard brainchild of Michael Gove.

BlueBelle123 · 21/05/2018 18:42

DS is still compiling a list of quotes for tomorrow's lit exam, now on page 4......he's does not have a photgraphic memory.......should I say something before I explode Angry

Welcome Juggling I think you've caught some of us at a bad time, things will hoepfully be calmer tomorrow Smile

Sostenueto · 21/05/2018 18:42

Yep it Sure was Janet and don't the Tories love it, segregating children's ability even more!.
