I've found the threads really useful, supportive and helpful. I think the other thread is typical mumsnet behavior where you get a bun fight due to opposing views with the playground antics instead of agreeing to disagree and accepting that others have their own viewpoint. There is no right or wrong way to address revision - its individual and down to various factors.

KingscoteStaff · 17/03/2018 11:23

Well, this is annoying... Having managed to get tickets for the Rory Kinnear Macbeth to inspire DS’s revision, all the reviews say it’s a stinker! Do I take him and risk him feeling negative about the play just as he moves into the final stages of revision?!!!

Have got cinema live relay tickets for Mr Eccleston’s RSC version too, so maybe I’ll wait and see what the reviews are like for that.

Good luck to all DC doing their French oral next week!

Stickerrocks · 17/03/2018 11:42

Well we're united in our support for one & all - highers, foundations, Olympiads, dancers, poorly people or simply geeks with friendship issues. I really don't think any of us are going to be leading our DCs to the exam room by the hand, insisting on a line by line regurgitation of the question papers and then throwing our DC out into the snow because they failed to use the right grammar throughout the exam! Actually, had we better prepare a risk assessment and alternative travel arrangements in case it does snow in May/June? I hadn't thought of that one before.

Kingscote We bought tickets for the RSC screening, then the school booked a trip to see it, then the school trip was cancelled due to lack of support, then I booked tickets for the NT screening as well. I'm more than happy to spend a couple of evenings watching Mr Eccleston to critically evaluate his performance compared to young Rory if it means a comfy seat in my local cinemas with a glass of wine. I draw the line at the film version on general release at the mo though.

Snozzle My leaving party was in the school hall. The 4th years catered for it and dressed up in bunny rabbit costumes the year before, as it had an Easter theme.

Don't Well done on the prom commitment.

I've got tickets for the NT live screening - I think if it's poor, DS can have fun criticising it!
I hope it picks up by then, though...
In other news we've had quite a bit of snow here in SW London and I got to try out my new floral wellies that were recommended on MN!

LooseAtTheSeams · 17/03/2018 12:31

Oooohhh! Just seen the photo! Cute beyond the words for cute! Smile

Sostenueto · 17/03/2018 12:35

Today is the first time my dgd has been left alone at home while my dd at work. Had a car crash yesterday, but all is fine though still a bit teary,, but the guy that did it scarpered and I had to call police, trying very hard to remember culprits reg number as I couldn't find pen in car whilst talking to police, called eldest dd to get dgd from station for me as I was on way to pick her up, and in the midst of all the traffic which I was blocking suffered abuse thrown at me by other impatient drivers whilst I waited for police. ( various bits hanging off car were not sure if safe to drive).
Police helped shove some bits back and managed to move to safe spot where they breathalized me.
Sorry for long inappropriate to thread story, so today I'm not driving courtesy car on way and dgd enjoying being on her own till 2 pm but rang me when she got up and miracle upon miracle made her own breakfast and lunch and is now revising. Phew!

Sostenueto · 17/03/2018 12:37

Glad you like photo loose!

LooseAtTheSeams · 17/03/2018 12:49

Oh no, Sostenueto that must have really shaken you. I hope you're ok and that the police catch the culprit - I'm useless at remembering anything if it isn't written down!
Your dgd is doing well - good for her!

snozzlemaid · 17/03/2018 12:52

sticker Mine was in the hall too. I honestly can't remember what 4th year were dressed as though.
I catered for 5th year when I was in 4th year. Their theme was Royal Ascot so we had to wear jockey's outfits, complete with jodhpurs and wellies! Hideous.

Stickerrocks · 17/03/2018 12:54

Yes, I was dressed as a bunny rabbit! I have no idea

Sost I always forget to take photos in situations like that. Don't let it knock your confidence, we all get flustered.

Stickerrocks · 17/03/2018 12:55

...I have no idea if we had jockeys in our year.

Can we talk prom? What have you got sorted? I think DD will be low key. Talk to me, shoes, hair the lot. I want to go too!!!!

BlueBelle123 · 17/03/2018 13:24

If DS goes don't know whether or buy a suit or hire........at what age do they stop growing!!!!! won't need a suit for anything else 6th form is very casual.

Shoes.....do you think he could get away with his school shoes......have to give them a good polish obvously Grin

Hair......that's tricky he's never been one for gel should he experiment but with his curly hair probably not adviseable

Makeup.........best not go there!!!

What do you think Oddsocks Grin

AlexanderHamilton · 17/03/2018 13:31

Hope you’re ok sostenuto& not too shaken up.

I’m on the warpath today. DD’s room is disgusting & she’s ruined her Capet, dressing table & bedding with foundation & mascara stains. For a girl who isn’t “girly” she puts one heck of a lot of crap on her face & she’d be able to lie in bed half an hour extra in the mornings is she didn’t spend so long doing her make up. I’m also concerned at the amount of chocolate wrappers I’m finding. She’s started to put weight on.

And as for Ds, if he thinks I’m standing ironing clothes for hours for him to just chuck them all in a pile of Lego he’s another thing coming.

Oddsocks - we’ve got the dress & shoes (dress is a little tight though) & Dd will do her own hair & make up. I have no idea what they actually do at prom & neither does Dd. It’s the day after prize day, that’s all I know.

mmzz · 17/03/2018 13:44

hope you are ok, Sostenueto

mmzz · 17/03/2018 13:49

Bluebelle I think they've still got a couple more inches to grow upwards, and quite a lot of broadening too. I wouldn't spend a lot of money on a suit, if I were you. I'm planning to hire from Moss Bros, or similar.

Teenmum60 · 17/03/2018 14:08

Hope you are ok @Sostenueto - take it easy today.

I am doing work experience today - covering DD's job - only managed one mistake so far to call a baby a he instead of a she :(

We only have the dress so far for the Prom ...looked at some shoes/sandals but DD quite fussy when it comes to footwear. I've agreed to a spray tan (if we don't manage to get away the week before prom) nails, hair and make up. Hopefully we can find a small bag when out and about.

Looks like a change of clothing will be taken for after-prom too...(DD said HOY said it was amusing to see girls change from Maxi to Mini dresses in just a few hours).

Oddsocks15 · 17/03/2018 15:07

Bluebelle Ha Ha Grin

Actually hire is a good idea for my DD too mmzz hadn’t considered that. She doesn’t wear dresses and lives in tracksuits. After prom clothing teen I can’t get my DD to look at dresses for the main event!!

Ooh and DD got her National Insurance number today!! Eek, she will soon be 16!

Stickerrocks · 17/03/2018 15:29

Prom: we bought the frock before Christmas from a shop which promised to sell only one of each design to each school regardless of colour. It was a sample from the previous year & only (!) £100. One of DD'S friends fell in love with the same dress in a different colour & went to another shop to buy it for £350. Hoping the will look sufficiently different. DD has bought the shoes herself & has hair booked with a friend. We need inspiration for hair which looks like Side Show Bob's from The Simpsons. Transport & after-prom party is hanging in the balance due to major bust up with former friends last month. Frock will be worn on a couple of cruises we have booked to justify the expense.

We had to give DD'S NI no. to her employer recently. Scary.

Alexander your assessment of the room, carpet & make up situation made me giggle. You sound just like me.

Thanks all for your concern, much appreciated! Yes am shaken but not stirredGrin

Oratory1 · 17/03/2018 21:11

Just dipping in and out of this thread but I love the fact that although I might not agree with some of the approaches on here, you are all supportive of the different methods used and the different levels of ability and work ethic in our dc. Has so far been a thread where parents have been able to compare and contrast and not criticise - I hope it stays that way

Oratory1 · 17/03/2018 21:17

Prom (well dinner) was held after mocks in Jan as a post mocks celebration but we got lucky and borrowed dj from his sisters bf so just bought a shirt and tie. He ll probably need a suit again in sixth form but I know he’ll grow before then so happy to put off buying.

mmzz · 17/03/2018 22:11

We are all just doing our best, feeling our way through. Even those of us who have done it before have never been in the situation of doing these new GCSEs with the individual child who is currently in year 11.

I don't venture very far off these GCSE threads any more because I've lost patience with the way that so many threads get hijacked by the Mumsnet users who have the energy and appetite to have useless bunfights (eg that other thread). I think I may be getting too old for Mumsnet.
