Should she go for re mark or not GCSE Eng lang, one mark off 7

Hello,

dd got 56/80 on paper A, (8) and 47/80 on paper B(6), totalling 103.

The boundaries show she could still keep the overall six even if she went down to 37 on the B paper, if she gets a remark.
38 and above gives her a 7 (A).
dd is in a special school, under Camhs and took it a yr early, and doesn't want to do it again.

Just 104 marks would give her the 7!!, and she got 103.

if she's got 47 surely she can't drop to 37?
This is tricky, is it worth it?

Did you report her illness and get a GP letter?

If so, she will already have been given special consideration. This will have added a few marks already so a remark probably isn't going to reap benefits .

I would put it forward but be aware it isn't a remark. It is a review of marking. They look to see if the mark scheme has been applied correctly, not whether thr new marker agrees.

E.g. if an answer was in 2nd top band and the new marker agrees the mark scheme has been applied, it wouldn't get increased by a mark if the new marker felt that tehy wluld have put it 1 higher in thr band.
It would get moved if the marker found that the candidate hit a criteria in a higher band and it hadn't been awarded credit.

The original mark isn't protected either.

Dd had a remark needing 2 marks to cross the grade boundary. Hers didn't change but we subsequently have found out that it takes 4 extra marks to be found before there would be a change.

no I didn't say anything at the time of her being ill, she dragged herself in and i picked her up.
Maybe you're right, one mark won't be that easy to pick up.

Dd is scared she'll go down a mark or a few, to her that would take the shine off the fact she passed in the first place.
She's right in a way, because she's overcome so much to even get this far in life or sit the exam. She's been mentally ill for two years, and I think knowing she got an 8 in the first paper is making her proud.

They are talking about something known as 'tolerance' there but they are talking out of their arse. the marks are generally UMS marks anyway (although in practice there is not much difference) not raw marks. But as maisy explained above the new system is a review of marks. If the reviewer found the marker had put an answer in the wrong band (which could be the difference of ONE mark!) he/she would put the response up into the next band.

I am running a thread about English remarks on MN : lots of lucky DCs have had marks increased by one or two to go up a grade...

sun you really must get a doctor's note for the next lot of exams. One of my students didn't attend and exam at all (MH issues) and still got his overall C for A Level.

The illness should be compensated for - definitely. No one would begrudge her that. But it's too late for the GCSEs - so please think about it for next time. Sorry if that sounds firm!

My dc needed 2 marks to go up to a 7. Had done very well on paper 1( nearly 90%) and much less well on paper 2 which added more weight to the English teachers agreement that a remark of that paper was sensible. No move, and it is quite expensive.

hi, thankyou for your responses, dd had an about turn and emailed the school to request they ask the exam board (AQA) for the review.
Having read piggywaspushed's thread, and some of these replies she decided it all seemed a bit random, and that it would be worth it if she were to gain the mark.
She'd have to lose 9 to actually go down a grade, and I'm not sure the review goes into that much dissection anyhow?
She has more gsce's to do this year, as that one was taken a yr in advance.
I will remember the advice about illness and gp, as I has no idea you could report illness on the day scenarios.

With AQA English, it's raw marks, not UMS. It is definitely worth doing. Good luck with it.

MH issues can be reported throughout the year, and also on the day The Exams Officer can put things in place such as a quieter . less stressful location to do exams. While it's on your mind, maybe ask to have a chat with her? (or him!)
