Does anyone know when Eton will be advising on acceptance results for entry 2019?
I believe it's sometime in December.

We are based in Manila. But the post will be delivered to Shanghai. Waiting for it...

I am wondering about the number of overseas applicants vs number of overseas places. I believe places for overseas applicants are capped at 10% or so. With applications from overseas increasing significantly what is the number chasing each place? A lot higher than the 5 to 1 based on overall numbers?

I just called the Admissions office, my son didn't get in.
Good luck to everyone still awaiting their result.

Thats a shame Finney but over the years I've known quite a few bright capable boys who didn't get in and fairly obviously lots of very bright capable boys who didn't even choose to apply. All have gone onto to be successful well adjusted and happy at other schools the "best school" in the world is the one that is the right school for you DS and you.

IslandThyme · 19/12/2016 13:58

Sorry to hear that, Finney! I suspect our news is the same. I offered to call the school for my son, but he wants to wait for the letter. Good luck finding the right school for your son!

FinneyBoy · 19/12/2016 14:06

Fingers crossed for you Island

I wish I had realized sooner how much he would have wanted to go to school there. We didn't prepare him at all. I never thought he would want to leave home so soon. It was never really on our radar as we've always been nontraditional as far as our lifestyle and schooling goes. My children were born in the US and educated there until 4 years ago. After that, we moved on to a boat and home schooled while crusing from the North East of the US and down to the Bahamas. We ended up moving to this little island and my son has been in school here since 2nd grade. My father-in-law attended Eton and as soon as my son was born, he was pushing for it. My husband didn't go as he had dyslexia. Most boys in my husband's family have been educated there -- of course, that was before testing. My son is there first to have to get in on his own merit. My FIL passed away 5 years ago. I know he would be proud to know that his grandson is so keen.

Eton encourages no prep and short of a few practice interviews with me and one with the school principal he had none.
They send feedback to his school head so I'm looking to meet with him to find out more.

OP posts:
IslandThyme · 19/12/2016 15:06

I knew they discouraged trying to prep. We didn't even do practice interviews! My son is very outgoing, but you wouldn't know it when you first meet him. What other schools are you looking at FB?

FinneyBoy · 19/12/2016 15:31

Island I've not been looking anywhere else. Eton was my only application as my son was keen on it. I think it might be too late now, I looked at Winchester a few days back but they've closed up for 2019 entry.
Local state schools where I live are very good so will probably go with that. I'll speak to my son tonight and see what his reaction is to the Eton decision.

I hope he doesn't take the news too hard. Good luck. ((((HUGS))))

MuseumOfCurry · 19/12/2016 16:09

My son's was vague/useless.

By the way most UK schools will make allowances for overseas applicants WRT the deadlines.

Sorry to hear about this Finney.

CookieDoughKid · 19/12/2016 23:09

Good luck with your Eton placements! I'm envious and if I had the money I would!! I have met two Etonian's in my line of work and they were both both extremely impressive, high-flying professionals. They held such gravitas and respect in my company. So much so, that I looked up their past education!

In many schools scholarships carry little or often no financial reward, Eton's is 10% off the fees, Winchester's carries no value, at SPS its worth £60, all three offer stand alone means tested bursaries to scholars and non scholars. At other schools winning a scholarship will have little or no guaranteed financial reward but means tested bursary are often only available to scholars.
Every school is different always check their website.

peteneras · 23/12/2016 11:18

”Eton's is 10% off the fees, Winchester's carries no value, at SPS its worth £60. . .”

Didn’t know Winchester’s such a scrooge, HG. And £60 - St. Paul’s? Gee, what can you do with that? A meal at McDonald’s, perhaps.

Eton’s scholarship award used to be 100% off the fees in times past. Then it was halved not that long ago and quickly halved again. In order to release more funds to help more people, the scholarship award is now down to 10% off the fees in line with most schools.

But you brilliant guys with scholarship potential need not fear about all this reduced scholarship financial awards. In addition to the scholarship award, a needy pupil can apply, and almost always granted, a full bursary up to 100% or greater i.e. allowances for free uniforms, books, music lessons (more than one instrument if applicable) and even pocket money. Let’s face it, this is undoubtedly better than Father Christmas! Xmas Grin

I often tell parents school fee’s about the last thing they should worry about if their sons can get a scholarship to Eton.

Happy Christmas!

SunnyWinter · 23/12/2016 15:55

Is playing a musical instrument considered to be a must if applying?

IslandThyme · 23/12/2016 16:05

I don't think so, but it doesn't hurt. They are looking for boys who are well rounded -- not just academically strong, but with varied interests in sports and the arts.

christmaswreaths · 23/12/2016 17:10

My son is going for assessment in the summer term also for entry 2019... It's a long shot but worth a try. He is a very bright boy with lots of interests including music but his school has never sent a single boy to Eton before...

Not at all, SunnyWinter. Assuming you're applying for an academic scholarship.

SunnyWinter · 23/12/2016 18:11

Pete, asking for regular Eton entry, not scholarship.

peteneras · 23/12/2016 18:43

Ditto.

Dapplegrey1 · 23/12/2016 18:45

Sunny - my DS didn't play an instrument and his singing is so out of tune that at the Carol Service people in neighbouring pews turned round to see where the racket was coming from, but he still got in as a non scholar.
