Continuing from the year 12 - 13 thread.

Good luck with continuing studies, uni open days, driving tests, etc.

Hope the tests turn up something useful, ono.

MrsSchadenfreude · 04/01/2017 00:20

Does anyone else on here have DC going through the IB? I swear I will either kill DD1 or have a nervous breakdown by the end of it.

Despite paying vast amounts for an organisational tutor to help her organise a plan for catching up on the work, she has not stuck to the plan and has done little more than fuck all this holiday. She has managed to finish her extended essay but still has three internal assessments that are overdue.

JugglingFromHereToThere · 04/01/2017 09:18

Hi Mrs S, that does sound frustrating, but hopefully your DD will be more inclined and able to catch up with what's needed once back at school with her peers and teachers? Perhaps she needed the break? I know when I was at school it was certainly possible to have a proper break over Christmas and New Year hols, maybe do some revision at Easter!
DD has spent inordinate amounts of time especially this week on her Art. I'm not sure Biology or Geography got much of a look in. But at least the art project is provisionally in today - though in some ways unfortunately they are still able to work on it for several more weeks I think Hmm

In other news she just received a high for her offer from Sheffield. (Two higher than predicted grades, although one is recognised as borderline) So we'll have to decide at some point what to do about that. Looks like she'll have 5 offers to consider which has to be good I guess even if it may make decision making harder Xmas Confused

EnormousTiger · 04/01/2017 14:25

My two (both y3) have had a relaxed Christmas holiday (history course work was finished before the holiday started) but have done a bit of work. One has 3 university offers so far and the other one two offers. (They are doing A level not IB and they did 4 AS exams each last summer).

teta · 04/01/2017 17:08

Hi ,I hope you all had relaxing holidays and here's some Wine to a brilliant 2017.
Am i the only one with a DD doing mocks now?She has just informed me she has 2 weeks study leave as well Confused.I think she has been relatively relaxed and has been enjoying the getting up at midday. The last few holidays have been spent getting up really early for milking Etc and starting revision at two is relatively easy in comparison.

Mrs S. That sounds hard.I've heard the IB is so much harder than 3-4 A levels.Good luck with finding out Ono!Juggling I'm praying that DD will get one offer!I just hope she has no bad news over the exams as that would really knock her confidence.

EnormousTiger · 04/01/2017 18:04

Mocks are in March for my two.

HSMMaCM · 04/01/2017 18:23

Mocks next week for mine.

OP posts:
aginghippy · 04/01/2017 18:45

Mocks next week for mine too.

She has 4 offers, still waiting to hear from Bristol. I told her if she has trouble choosing, she could always flip a coin Grin Her uncle suggested consulting the magic 8 ball.

Really I think she can't go wrong, they are all good choices. She couldn't be happy and get an excellent education at any of them.

namechange7711 · 04/01/2017 18:46

DS' mocks are after Easter i.e. starting 24 April, which seems very late to me. Not much time to turn things around if they all go pear-shaped.

aginghippy · 04/01/2017 18:46

She could be happy

aginghippy · 04/01/2017 18:50

It does seem late name change. I thought part of the purpose of mocks is to give them (and the teachers) an idea of what to work on.

JugglingFromHereToThere · 04/01/2017 19:22

I feel the same ageinghippy - that they are all good choices and DD could be happy at any of them. Nevertheless choosing which ones to go for is still going to be tricky.
I'm sorry if this is annoying talk teta when your DD is going for such a competitive course and would love just one offer. But I hope you know we're all rooting for her too Flowers
I'll have to ask DD about mocks, she's not mentioned them recently! It's all been about art project deadlines.
She got a school report today but it wasn't wildly exciting - just one of those letters/numbers ones with little personal comment. Seems like she's broadly on track but I think they were giving them all a bit of a kick up the @*@ - that's the way I was reading it anyway.

TheMortificadosDragon · 04/01/2017 19:40

Mine doesn't go back till the 9th, and I think her mocks are just before half term - feb anyway. She's been doing quite a lot of work - self- teaching mechanics 3 and also started on physics revision notes. Also quite a bit of time looking at accommodation choices esp at Southampton, and journey times - not too awful - I think she's getting herself into the frame of mind of being quite happy to be rejected by Cambridge.

HSMMaCM · 04/01/2017 20:28

Easter mocks do seem late. Dd has mocks next week and the retakes in their own time if they get rubbish results.

OP posts:
bigTillyMint · 05/01/2017 06:33

Teta, DD did her first mock yesterday - not great timing bang after the Christmas holidays and no study leave (is in lessons before/after each exam), so she is expecting poor grades. I bet they will make them do more mocks before Easter. I suppose it's all good exam practice and gives them a kick up the backsideConfused

HSM did she get her PS done? I would love to know whether DD got her offers on the basis of hers. One for sure said they don't even look at them...

EnormousTiger · 05/01/2017 07:21

Early March are my children's mocks.... and I meant my 2 are in year 13 not 3 above, obviously......

HSMMaCM · 05/01/2017 08:32

BTM - did she get her PS done? She got a job, had a fight with her boyfriend and cleaned the guinea pigs out, but her PS just has some bullet points she made with me. It's a start I suppose.

OP posts:
teta · 05/01/2017 09:39

Juggling thank you for being so thoughtful!
I love hearing about all the offers people are getting and how the system works.I have 3 more children that hopefully won't want to do Vet
Medicine ( will be strongly discouraged!!) and will go through this.So the more knowledge I have the better.

JugglingFromHereToThere · 05/01/2017 11:00

Thanks teta. I think we've got a lovely community here, and lots of really helpful information sharing too Smile

I've just got one more in the pipe-line - currently in Y10

Horsemad · 05/01/2017 20:34

Happy New Year Y'all! Grin

I had somehow missed the last couple of pages, so just had a quick skim read to catch up.

Teta, sorry about Liverpool Sad Ono, hope the GP gives you some answers.

Flowers for anyone else struggling with problems at the moment.

My DS's application has finally gone!!! It went yesterday. He applied for Newcastle, Leeds, Liverpool, Birmingham & Nottingham - which is odd because he was not impressed by Nott'm's subject talk at the open day Hmm He does love the campus though.

I feel slightly euphoric. Grin

He's just got to get the grades now... He has mocks next month (his birthday is during his mocks too!).

JugglingFromHereToThere · 06/01/2017 07:49

Hi Horsemad - congrats on getting the application in Grin
Bet you'll be getting some offers next week if not sooner!
All of those Uni's sound utterly fab - I'm sure he'll have a great time at any of them!

JugglingFromHereToThere · 06/01/2017 07:54

Oh and I meant to say I think he's smart not to be put off by one department talk - just one person's presentation after all, although obviously you have to go on something to make these choices. Depends really whether it was style or substance you weren't keen on? Liking the campus though pretty important too!

GetAHaircutCarl · 06/01/2017 08:15

Hi everyone.

Can't believe it's 2017! We're on the home straight now. Then, for us at least, school will Be No More by July!

Mocks are at the end of the month (I think).

Looks like DD will miss them as she heads out to the States soon for a few months to work. DH and I will miss her so much Sad. I think DS too. He was in a foul mood this morning, saying it was something to do with his Oyster Card, but actually I think it was because DD was reading an email about when she should fly out etc.

Anyway, it's the end of an era.

teta · 06/01/2017 08:23

Juggling I have one in year 6 and 2 in year 8.My 12 year old DS also has to take an exam this year too - Common entrance.Which is more troublesome than DDs A levels because he's 12 and a boy and doesn't like work.
Yes,it's a nice supportive thread here unlike a lot of MN now ( got a right kicking in Chat last night).
Horsemad well done. Its all starting to feel as though we're in the final stretch now!

JugglingFromHereToThere · 06/01/2017 11:37

Wow that all sounds very grown-up GetAHaircut - off to the states for a few mths work?! Shock

I think here too DS will massively miss DD if she goes to Uni this year - can you believe it's now likely this September/ October?!
