Continuing from the year 12 - 13 thread.

Good luck with continuing studies, uni open days, driving tests, etc.

Realistically, is it helpful if I go with her?

Ours was glad of an extra pair of eyes and ears (mostly DH not me) and it makes a pleasant day out. Adults generally are a bit better at bullshit dectection. Some of the places would have been logistically impossible from where we live by train for the day. If there are places yours can get to with friends, that'll be good too. Obv don't helicopter - apparently there were some particularly nightmarish parents and embarrassed kids at Cambridge, if you go then at least some of the time split up.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 21/12/2016 22:46

Excellent. Thank you :)

Think some of the places far far oop north will need some parental help if she's not going to take three days over one open day.

teta · 22/12/2016 11:15

Dd very sad and demoralised here.A rejection from Liverpool and nothing heard from the other two interviews. The worst thing was she thought she had performed well .I'm trying to cheer her up but feel a bit down myself. The most difficult thing is keeping positive and working ( revising).

eatyourveg · 22/12/2016 11:16

Or consider Heap's guide as a stocking filler although there will be one in the school library she can consult. It includes an overview of each uni. if she really wants to go overboard she could look at this tool comparing the cost of living in two different places in the uk.

HSMMaCM · 22/12/2016 13:04

Oh teta. What a shame.

OP posts:
TheMortificadosDragon · 22/12/2016 13:12

Oh, that's rotten luck, teta. But vet is so hard to get into, especially straight from A levels. I can't remember if I mentioned before a relative who was determined to be a vet, didn't get the A levels so even applying a year later wasn't an option - did an anatomy degree (and a load more experience with vets and on farms), then vet school and now runs a large and extremely successful practice.

ono40 · 22/12/2016 16:30

That is bad luck and bad timing @teta (tries out new MN function!) but my friend's DD got a rejection from Liverpool and is now at the RVC. I think it was because her work experience had nothing horsey in it and Liverpool is big on equine so it could be something as simple as that.

Peaceandl0ve · 22/12/2016 19:47

Teta, chin up, it is really really difficult. I was just saying to my DH 5 mins ago that we were helping our DD get over her Liverpool rejection. One year on she is out with her boyfriend tonight celebrating their one year anniversary after a happy and fulfilled first term studying vet med at Bristol.

Hold on, it is a long and bumpy ride, I hope your DD gets an offer from one or more of her other interviews.

LittleHoHum · 22/12/2016 20:58

Sorry to hear that teta. Fingers crossed for the other choices.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 22/12/2016 20:59

Thank you all for your advice :) Teta, I'm sorry.

bigTillyMint · 22/12/2016 21:03

Teta I am sure the right offer will come through - FlowersChocolateWine

teta · 24/12/2016 09:17

Thank you for the commiserations and reassuring words.Yes,its a really tough process and the rejection was really bad timing. Here's hoping for a much better 2017.PeaceandlOve - thank you.
The only bit of good news is dd1 passed her Piano exam Star.
Have a wonderful Christmas everyone Wine.

TheMortificadosDragon · 24/12/2016 17:02

Well done her!

Happy Christmas everyone. DD has been doing maths and physics the last couple of days since they broke up, but has emerged to bake gingerbread. Last years house was a bit much for 3 people and a small dog, so this year its more of a gingerbread shed plus various biscuits including some bones. The kitchen looked very festive with a light frosting of flour and icing sugar.Xmas Grin

TheMortificadosDragon · 31/12/2016 23:24

Happy New Year, everyone - should be an exciting one!

namechange7711 · 01/01/2017 12:08

Can I start the New Year by re-joining you all having been AWOL for several months? DS1 is the one with severe clinical depression who I wasn't sure if he'd be able to stay in school or take his AS exams last year.

Very glad to say he appears to have turned a corner recently (fingers and toes very firmly crossed) and even managed to get his UCAS application in the day before school broke up for Christmas. He's had four offers come through, so we need to actually go and look at these places soon!

Here's hoping 2017 is a good one for all of us. Star

bigTillyMint · 01/01/2017 13:40

Awww, namechange, that's such good news Smile Fantastic to hear stories of hope - well done you and your DS for turning things round Flowers

TheMortificadosDragon · 01/01/2017 17:20

That's great, must be a relief to have him getting better and have those offers come in - start the year good and positive!

HSMMaCM · 01/01/2017 18:41

My nephew (in his late 20s) told me he had a dream that he filled in DD's UCAS form for her, so well done for getting yours in namechange. It's so hard when they are battling other issues alongside all the usual college work.

OP posts:
namechange7711 · 01/01/2017 19:00

Thanks everyone. Smile It was a pleasant surprise that he got offers so quickly, and especially over the Christmas break - I expected not to hear anything for weeks. Now we just need to work out how on earth to travel to these far-flung places he's chosen!

Does that mean that your DD hasn't got her UCAS form in yet HSM ? In which case, sympathies from me because I know how stressful that is.

TheMortificadosDragon · 01/01/2017 19:25

This thread, and the uni offers 2017 one may be able to help with travel advice.

HSMMaCM · 01/01/2017 20:27

The UCAS form is all done, apart from her personal statement.

OP posts:
JugglingFromHereToThere · 02/01/2017 23:07

DD busy with art over last few days - soooooo time consuming, but think it's going well. A nice project she's chosen but it's all due in very soon, and then they choose a second project leading towards the exam (something like that!)

Hope teta's DD gets some better news soon - you only need one after all?
Fingers crossed for her X
I shared a flat with 3 vet students and someone else on my course went on to study vet med after finishing our BSc course, so it can be done one way or the other

Glad to hear things going well for your DS namechange, that's great! We got some very quick responses too, just before Christmas. Very encouraging isn't it?

Is your DD aiming to get that personal statement done before she goes back HSM?! Mine go back Wednesday.

HSMMaCM · 02/01/2017 23:17

I'm aiming for her to write it tomorrow .........

OP posts:
JugglingFromHereToThere · 03/01/2017 10:46

Sounds like a plan HSM - hope that goes well for her, and everyone else has a good day too (last of the Christmas break here)

Hope you've all had a good Christmas and New Year, ours has been as good as could be expected in the circumstances - really very nice at times (but still hugely affected by a family bereavement a couple of years ago)
So, as usual we had our own small Christmas here first - with nice walk on Christmas afternoon - and then went on for family gathering over a few days between Christmas and New Year. DD wasn't sure if she'd join us for that bit due to pressures of art projects (or stay here with DH) but think we're all glad she decided to go for it.

ono40 · 03/01/2017 21:23

Happy New Year everyone! Glad you all had a good Christmas, it really seems so long ago. DS seems to have spent most of the time with his recurrent fever thing which is just annoying now so we took him to a private GP and are awaiting test results.

DS and I did a couple of shifts at Crisis which really put our troubles into perspective. Other than that we lay around eating and drinking far too much and DS actually did some coursework...without me nagging (needs emoticon for fainting).
