BTECs at college - Support thread 2

TeenAndTween · 19/08/2016 11:45

Following on from the 2015 thread to inform and support each other through the ups and downs of BTECs. Mainly aimed at y12/13 level, but BTECs alongside GCSEs more than welcome too. Plus anyone just considering BTECs and wanting information.

What I learned last year:

You have to hit the ground running as the very first piece of work may well count towards your final grade

DD's course has 3 options like this.

Subsidiary Diploma - 9 units (1 year, 9 units (5 units, then 4 more))
Diploma - 12 units total (2 year, 6 units each year)
Extended Diploma 18 units total (2 year, 9 units each year, 5 in first half of year, 4 in second half)

DD is doing the Diploma (2 A level equivalent), but the college ensures that they do all the 4 'compulsory' units in the first year so if someone drops out they can still qualify for the Subsidiary Diploma (1 A level equivalent?).

You pretty much have to pass every single unit in order to pass the whole thing. There are limited opportunities to re-submit, but there are some. The Pass criteria for DD's course are quite straightforward (if you can structure things properly which DD struggles with). The Merit criteria are harder, and the Distinction criteria need a good level of analysis (that DD doesn't have).

Each unit is made up of a number of Pass, Merit and Distinction criteria. To reach each level you have to meet all the criteria at that level. So if on your first assignment for a unit you miss a Merit criteria, you can't get higher than a pass for the unit (as far as I understand).

Each unit gives you a number of Points. For DD mainly it is 70 for a pass, 80 for a Merit and 90 for a Distinction. To Pass the whole thing she would need 12x70 points - 840, equivalent to EE A level grades. To get CC equivalent she needs 920 minimum. To get AA she would need 1000 points.

DD has up to 3 teachers at any time, each teaching a unit. They teach a bit, and then set an assignment. For a week or 2 they don't teach in some lessons and they use the time to get on with the assignment. Then more teaching and second assignment. Around 4 assignments per unit.

What you don't have to do is 'extra' exam practice, question practice etc. So all work is pretty much set. The students don't have to work out extras. (However exactly what is required for some criteria is about as clear as mud, and DD seems to get little/no feedback on assignments to help her improve for future ones. Sometimes there seem to be implicit requirements that DD doesn't catch on about.)

Disclaimer. I don't know if all BTECs are like DD's !

A couple of useful tables for reference:

Table showing UCAS points

A level equivalent UCAS

And finally the Pearson BTEC site from where you can find specs, unit descriptions, and pass/merit/distinction criteria.

(Praying for less of a roller-coaster this year).

DD's last day today. Smile
She has driven herself in just to do the final sign offs.
This has been 21 months of stress but she has:
a) succeeded with the course
b) passed her driving test
c) not got pregnant
so this is successful I think.

Next stop an apprenticeship which could go either way I think. Is there a thread anywhere for 'parents of apprentices'? I might need it!

HSMMaCM · 23/06/2017 12:49

T&T hopefully also

d) not been arrested Grin

TeenAndTween · 23/06/2017 20:09

Definitely not arrested!

Nothing is ever simple though. Sad
One of DDs units has been moderated down, and the summary sheet she has come home with has something that we/she thinks was a Merit only down as a Pass. So summary sheet says final grade MP ...

An email has been sent querying ...

TweenAndTeen
I have followed your posts and found them really helpful, as I think I will be following a similar path with one of mine. Well done to your DD, (and you too!) Hope the apprenticeship goes well.

Do unis automatically get notified of btec results, like a levels?

cricketballs · 15/07/2017 06:49

Do unis automatically get notified of btec results, like a levels?

Yes - they are also fed through earlier than A levels so confirmation is earlier allowing more time to sort out halls etc Grin

HSMMaCM · 15/07/2017 08:34

👍 thanks

TeenAndTween · 29/07/2017 12:55

Final signing off from me, as DD's certificate has arrived confirming Merit-Merit. She also started her apprenticeship this week.

(Did you know there is an Apprenticeships board under the Education topic now?)

Is DD the only one that doesn't have her final btec result. She's been told it should be a distinction but it's still to be confirmed.

cricketballs · 01/08/2017 07:55

HSMMaCM the final results were to be submitted in July (5th), with regards to confirmation/certificates it depends on how your school/college works, mine for example give out the certificates on A level results day.

HSMMaCM · 01/08/2017 08:41

Thanks cricketballs that's what I was expecting - to get the result with the A levels

My son is at the same point as yours (different course but BTEC level 3 extended diploma) and he received his certificate in the post over a week ago so that sounds like bad organisation somewhere. Will the college also have A level results today? Can you go in to see them?

Next year the results will go through UCAS so if he makes the grades for his firm course it will be fine, but if not you will of course need to results to organise clearing.

We're still waiting for his brother's level 2 result but I'm assuming that will be aligned with GCSE results so will be another week.

The external can be sat twice, there will be a window in January. The results next year are automatically fed through to UCAS

Showandtell · 18/08/2017 04:34

Hi. Could anyone tell me what the difference is between a Btec certificate and diploma?

cricketballs · 18/08/2017 08:00

Certificate is equivalent to AS
Ext Cert = 1 A2
Foundation Dip = 1 A2 1 AS
Diploma = 2 A2
Ext Dip = 3 A2

catslife · 18/08/2017 16:55

draylon dd did a level 2 Edexcel certificate with exams in 2016 and was able to resit after first attempt in January. If the unit is 100% exam they just resit the exam, if it's part coursework and part exam they need to resit exam and resubmit coursework. There were level 2 past papers available on the Edexcel website.
BTW friend's son with BTEC Extended IT diploma is taking a degree with 100% coursework i.e. no exams at Sheffield Hallam university!

EllenJanethickerknickers · 22/08/2017 12:36

Oh, Drayton, I feel your pain.

Recently got DS2's first year results for the 90 credit diploma. MM, when he was supposedly on track for DM and aspirational target of DD. I partially blame the college. The marking has been very very late for each assignment and no time given for resubmissions. DS was willing to do resubs but they let him finish term 2 weeks early saying they'd text him if necessary, which they didn't.

Obviously he could have made more effort to do things better first time and I should have been less trusting that he was doing all he should but college never once contacted me to say he wasn't meeting targets. Parents' evening (there was only one) was a waste of time as half his assignments hadn't been marked.

I guess the teachers are overworked as in most state education settings, but it's very frustrating.

For his 9 modules he got 4 passes, 3 merits and 2 distinctions, with a query on one of the passes as the VLE has it as 2 distinctions and a merit for the 3 assignments. It turns out for one of the 'distinction' assignments he missed one merit criteria and it wasn't picked up. Sigh. Hence actually a pass.

I must be more on the ball next year. We're aiming for a local apprenticeship if possible which would require MMM in the extended diploma. DS2 has ASD and doesn't communicate particularly well so interviews will be a challenge.

I'm thinking maybe HNC leading to HND route might be a better bet than university if he doesn't get an apprenticeship.

MiladyThesaurus · 24/08/2017 14:30

DS1 has just enrolled on an extended diploma in software development, and is resitting GCSE English alongside it (again). He was doing Alevels but his AS results were dire.

The college seem to offer a lot of support and are assessing him for learning support. There's definitely something amiss, as his results are far below what he's capable of in class.

HSMMaCM · 24/08/2017 23:09

I was concerned about DD doing a btec, because of all the hype about A levels. She was told she might get a distinction for the btec. She was thrilled to see distinction * on her results form, along with her slightly less exciting A level results. I'm so glad I didn't try to talk her out of it.

Tiredemma · 25/08/2017 10:03

Please may I join you all? DS1 didnt get the results needed to stay on at his current school. In hindsight I think this is better for him- academically he struggles and I dont think 3 A levels are the best option for him.
He is at a Premiership Rugby Academy currently and that requires a lot of commitment with just doesn't give the overall capacity for the type of studying that A Levels would require.
We have identified a Btec Sports related course which he is absolutely buzzing about. If anyone could give me any information about this course - Sports and Exercise Science Level 3 I would really appreciate it.

He has an interview at the college on Tuesday - not sure how timetables work (are they in ALL week, ALL day?). We live 40 miles away from this college but it is in the same city as his rugby academy so he does spend a fair amount of time down there anyway.

I dont think I can really describe the sense of relief I have that he wont be doing the A levels. It seems like a weird thing to be relieved about but I dont think he would have coped at all with that route.

TeenAndTween · 25/08/2017 20:38

I know nothing about sports.

At DD's college they did the BTECs in 4 days per week so she had 1 day per week off travelling. Many of the students had part time jobs on the other day but for various reasons DD didn't.

You also didn't need to be in college when you didn't have lessons so could go in at lunchtime if you had nothing in the morning.

Just in general, try to check the balance between practical and theoretical if the written work might be an issue.
