BTECs at college - Support thread 2

TeenAndTween · 19/08/2016 11:45

Following on from the 2015 thread to inform and support each other through the ups and downs of BTECs. Mainly aimed at y12/13 level, but BTECs alongside GCSEs more than welcome too. Plus anyone just considering BTECs and wanting information.

What I learned last year:

You have to hit the ground running as the very first piece of work may well count towards your final grade

DD's course has 3 options like this.

Subsidiary Diploma - 9 units (1 year, 9 units (5 units, then 4 more))
Diploma - 12 units total (2 year, 6 units each year)
Extended Diploma 18 units total (2 year, 9 units each year, 5 in first half of year, 4 in second half)

DD is doing the Diploma (2 A level equivalent), but the college ensures that they do all the 4 'compulsory' units in the first year so if someone drops out they can still qualify for the Subsidiary Diploma (1 A level equivalent?).

You pretty much have to pass every single unit in order to pass the whole thing. There are limited opportunities to re-submit, but there are some. The Pass criteria for DD's course are quite straightforward (if you can structure things properly which DD struggles with). The Merit criteria are harder, and the Distinction criteria need a good level of analysis (that DD doesn't have).

Each unit is made up of a number of Pass, Merit and Distinction criteria. To reach each level you have to meet all the criteria at that level. So if on your first assignment for a unit you miss a Merit criteria, you can't get higher than a pass for the unit (as far as I understand).

Each unit gives you a number of Points. For DD mainly it is 70 for a pass, 80 for a Merit and 90 for a Distinction. To Pass the whole thing she would need 12x70 points - 840, equivalent to EE A level grades. To get CC equivalent she needs 920 minimum. To get AA she would need 1000 points.

DD has up to 3 teachers at any time, each teaching a unit. They teach a bit, and then set an assignment. For a week or 2 they don't teach in some lessons and they use the time to get on with the assignment. Then more teaching and second assignment. Around 4 assignments per unit.

What you don't have to do is 'extra' exam practice, question practice etc. So all work is pretty much set. The students don't have to work out extras. (However exactly what is required for some criteria is about as clear as mud, and DD seems to get little/no feedback on assignments to help her improve for future ones. Sometimes there seem to be implicit requirements that DD doesn't catch on about.)

Disclaimer. I don't know if all BTECs are like DD's !

A couple of useful tables for reference:

Table showing UCAS points

A level equivalent UCAS

And finally the Pearson BTEC site from where you can find specs, unit descriptions, and pass/merit/distinction criteria.

(Praying for less of a roller-coaster this year).

Marking place to catch up later. Think I will be rejoining you in September by the sound of it !

No Draylon, my PFB is having a rethink Grin She's thinking she might either do the 2nd year of her original BTEC or do another one year one but not at the same college.

I'm letting her reach her own decisions but pointed out thar next year will be her last free year of education and seeing how much the courses cost if you have to pay is I think helping focus her mind ...

MirabelleTree · 11/11/2016 11:32

T&T huge sympathies. DD was shocked at amount of writing and how technical some of the stuff was last year plus really disliked one of her lecturers, hence not wanting to go back to same college. She mentioned your DD's course today and my immediate comment was that I thought it would be a lot of writing.

I did get the impression before she started that it had gone downhill a bit and 'trading on previous reputation' cropped up a bit. Having said that friends with older DCS came out with good crop of results last summer.

Draylon we were in the same place as you this time last year with no results and no clear dates of when they would appear. Then one project came back finally with 'MiniMirabelle you have just scraped a pass in this project ' I think it was in January and I thought she might fail. But she did rally and then got into the swing of what was required.

Her College did encourage them to high for as high a grade as possible I felt which help abd she did manage to get Distinctions in 4 of the units in the end.

I haven't seen DD since August so am looking forward to her return to UK. She has a language exam at start of the month abd it would be great if she managed to pass it so has something else undecided her belt.

Don't think she has worked out that she'll have to have another shot at Maths if she goes back but I think Functional skills might be the way forward at this point.

Anyway she may yet change her mind but since it first came up a couple of weeks ago, she does seem to be leaning towards going and now really appreciates life in the UK!

TeenAndTween · 14/11/2016 19:44

Another moan (sorry).

This evening DD announced she's a bit worried about her next assignment as she doesn't think her notes are very good because she hasn't been able to tell the teacher she needs to take notes on a computer . She has had this teacher since September. Apparently no opportunity for 8 weeks to find her outside a lesson, or at the end of a lesson, or by email, and tell her that her dyspraxia makes it hard for her to take hand-written notes. Hmm

How she is going to survive in the real world I do not know.

And relax ...

DD had a sharp reminder that if she wants her distinction for dance, she has to ace every practical. She was injured and missed a couple, so has none in the bank like the others do. She will be gutted if she drops marks on any. As this is her strongest subject.

MirabelleTree · 12/12/2016 15:49

Your poor DD HSM, that's tough on her - how is she taking it ?

Drayton we were in similar boat last year not knowing how it is was going and it is quite nerve wracking.

T&T how are things?

DD was supposed to be home last week but was sick and couldn't board flight so back next week. Her boyfriend's Mum is in a flap about her future career which is quite handy as it is coming from someone else other than the you know nothing parents.

HSMMaCM · 12/12/2016 18:34

Mirabelle- hope your dd feels better soon. Glad she's coming home though. Yes, other people always know better than parents.

Dd is so focussed on tomorrow's car crash of a drama exam, that she doesn't have time to worry about dance today. She will be devastated if she doesn't get the result she wants for dance though.

MirabelleTree · 12/12/2016 18:38

Thanks HSM, think she's fine now. I'll keep fingers firmly crossed for your DD tomorrow.

TeenAndTween · 12/12/2016 19:36

I reckon there is only about another 200 days of college to go. No real idea what DD wants to do next, as what she says may of may not bare any resemblance to what she is actually intending. We just keep plugging away at why getting intentionally pregnant at 17/18 wouldn't be a good plan.

DD is passing assignments, but not reaching a number of the merits, some of which I think she could get if she focussed some more. I think she is capable of meriting 4/9 which is all she needs to end up with Merit Merit, but they keep slipping away (losing touch with how many have gone so far).

HSM Hope the exam went well.

On the plus side, DD2 has settled into secondary well. Smile

Teen, I can't begin to count the amount of times we've brought up the cons of a teenage pregnancy with DD Grin

MirabelleTree · 12/12/2016 20:34

DD is very anti having babies which suits me just fine right now ! It sounds as if things are still hard work T&T, my sympathies. Good news about DD2 .

Hi
Sorry if this is somewhere on the thread as I am new to it. I need advice about BTEC marking. One of DD tutor's has said 9 is the highest you can get for a unit although it appears to be marked out of 10 looking at the spec online. Over 18 units this could be a lot of marks lost if tutor is wrong about this. Basically tutor has said 9 is a distinction and that is the most you can get. I have tried to contact edexcel but they were not helpful via email to clear up this query. Does anyone know about this. It is a performance BTEC level 3 (2010 version) The units are worth 10 or 20 marks each. For context lots of things have been disorganised with the course.

robin64 · 04/01/2017 13:49

Okay I have managed to sort this out and it appears that 9 is a distinction and 10 is the credit value for each unit but to be honest I am still a bit confused about the marking and grading of these BTECs. Any insight welcome on this.

TeenAndTween · 04/01/2017 20:37

robin is this the spec does Annex G (p91-) help you at all?

You have grade points, which are multiplied by the number of credits for the unit to get you to the points gained by that unit.
These are all added up to give you the total points, which is then converted back into an overall grade for the BTEC. (So if doing diploma could end up with MP for example, extended diploma might end up with MMP)

Don't talk to me about transparency or organisation for BTECs!

Robin This is how Pearson's themselves explain the marking system.

HSMMaCM · 07/01/2017 14:24

We're going to see DD's btec dance show next month and then I think she's pretty much finished with dance.

MirabelleTree · 08/01/2017 10:30

Flipping heck HSM, time is shooting by - doesn't seem that long ago we were in the middle of their GCSE's

TeenAndTween · 08/01/2017 10:32

HSM What is your DD planning to do next?

MirabelleTree · 08/01/2017 10:34

How are things with DD T&T?

HSMMaCM · 08/01/2017 10:49

T&T she's decided not to go to dance college. She's considering uni, but hasn't written her personal statement and the deadline is looming. She's also considering open uni. She wants to study psychology and work with teenagers. Mock exams coming up this week.
