Ds starts year 7 in September so this is all new to us!!! I am looking for something for ds to wear over his blazer when it is raining. He has to catch 2 buses so lots of standing around and waiting and I don't want him having to wear a wet blazer all day!!!

this is part of the uniform for DS's school.

It's a great length & completely covers his blazer, and because it has taped seams it's very waterproof. And it's warm.

Congratulations on having a secondary school aged boy who is willing to wear a coat. They are rarely spotted and I thought they had almost become extinct.

TheSecondOfHerName · 14/08/2016 17:35

I'd suggest something that folds down small enough to be shoved into his bag.

monkeywithacowface · 14/08/2016 17:37

Ha ha I was going to say similar to TheSecond. I'm going to save my money on this one and not bother. I've been assured by many that coats over Blazers just don't happen round our way

RaisingSteam · 14/08/2016 17:41

Our school does a great personalised logo'd waterproof coat that they flog to gullible Y7 parents. DS never wore even once last year. Even when it was pouring with rain. They dry off.

I also got a pack-a-mac to go in his bag in case of an emergency. Guess what - he never wore that, ever, either.

Strongly suggest waiting till the first wet day of term and finding out what other kids wear.

dementedpixie · 14/08/2016 17:42

They don't really wear them at dds school either as there's nowhere to put them in school unless you are lucky enough to have a locker ( not enough for everyone to get one).

RaisingSteam · 14/08/2016 17:43

The point of the packamac is just so you can say "well you did have a coat" in case he ever complains/gets into trouble/gets pneumonia.

Exactly.

Mine was sometimes seen in a jacket if the rain was particularly bad, but even that was rare.

As others have said, it would need to be something that is easy to stuff into his school bag where it will then reside damp and unused for several months so that it's less likely to get left somewhere.

Floralnomad · 14/08/2016 17:56

A mini umbrella would be better with a plastic bag to put it in ( in his bag) , seriously he won't want to be the only one with a coat and none of them wear them .

Y7 boys will not wear a coat over a blazer even if in the middle of a hurricane. There is no point whatsoever in buying one. And tbh most secondary Blazers are made of such artificial material that rain rolls off them. If you want him to wear anything, get a hoody that is plain enough to fit with uniform, or a school games hoody if they have one, which might be worn underneath the blazer in v v cold weather

RaisingSteam · 14/08/2016 18:02

Now there's a thought - you could Nikwax spray the blazer!

TheSecondOfHerName · 14/08/2016 18:52

you could Nikwax spray the blazer!

We used do this in the winter, but you have to respray it after every wash.

Black pack-a-mac.

Hoodies banned at our school.

littledrummergirl · 14/08/2016 19:52

What everyone else said. A cheap packamac to live in the bottom of his bag. Grin

Really?? I cannot think of anything of worse then sitting in wet clothes all day. I guess I will buy a cheap tesco pac a mac then. Also what type of pencil case would you buy a boy?? I'm guessing some thing like Star Wars is out or is that seen as acceptable?? Grin

TheSecondOfHerName · 14/08/2016 23:18

No to StarWars.
Plain pencil case is fine. DS3 (just finished Y7) has a Quiksilver one. Hype is a popular brand for bags; do they do pencil cases?

TheSecondOfHerName · 14/08/2016 23:20

Or a Vans pencil case would also work. But unbranded is fine.

eyebrowsonfleek · 15/08/2016 01:15

The only time I've seen my teen son wear a coat to school is if it's snowing. (He still procrastinated about taking a coat on those days. Hmm)

If you're going to buy one get something in a dark colour and lightweight as they are going to be carried around a lot. It's very unusual to wear one even though boys round here happily wear hoodies at weekends.

eyebrowsonfleek · 15/08/2016 01:17

Pencil cases - go for something plain. My son carries pens in his blazer pocket but has a clear pencil case from WH Smith.

Dickorydockwhatthe · 15/08/2016 09:41

Geez I feel sorry ds he has some growing up to do!!! If I'm perfectly honest he'd probably be quite happy to wear a coat or have a Star Wars pencil case he doesn't tend to follow the crowd Grin

Well if he is happy to wear a coat and have a Star Wars pencil case it's fine.
Ask him what he wants

My ds2 went into year 7 last year. He didn't wear a coat because he had no where to put it once he got to school- and because he "doesn't need a coat"
I bought him a plain pencil case but after a week he started carrying his stuff in his blazer pocket
