Ds starts year 7 in September so this is all new to us!!! I am looking for something for ds to wear over his blazer when it is raining. He has to catch 2 buses so lots of standing around and waiting and I don't want him having to wear a wet blazer all day!!!

Ds is very disorganise so I think a plain one or cheap one will do then. I can't really remember boys having pencil cases at school tbh mainly the girls and the boys asking to borrow a pen. He's not too fussed on fashion and still plays with figures which is fine but I've said he may need to do it on the hush. I'm trying to get him into clothes etc so he has some kind of fashion sense compared to his dad Grin

OP Mine didn't tend to follow the crowd either - but it is a jungle out there and sadly it is reasonably likely that 'fitting in' will suddenly become a lot more important to him. I have an unused pack a mac and an unworn coat here from Yr7, not going to bother this year as that was a waste of money! Plain or surfy pencil cases here too - Star Wars a definite no no!

I have just asked DS1 who has just finished Y7.

He said he uses his pencil case. I asked him which is best and he said either a circle shaped one or hard case as they fit in your bag best. I think he means the barrel shaped one.

He does not wear a coat to school over his blazer. He does, however, have a plain navy umbrella for torrential downpours.

He has a Hype bag.

BertPuttocks · 15/08/2016 15:28

He sounds a lot like my DS was when he started Yr7. :o

I'd suggest one of those plain transparent pencil cases, purely because he will be less likely to lose everything else when rummaging through it to find a pencil sharpener.

I'd also have a small mountain supply of plain biros at home to put in his blazer pocket every morning to replace the ones that he will almost certainly have lost the day before.

Another one who suggests a plain pack-a-mac to be kept at the bottom of their school bag never to be seen again

Plain pencil case too - see through one is a good idea. Think ds has an old red one that came with something else.

If he doesn't wear a winter coat, you could always go for some extra base layers instead.

DS is now 18 - he did not once wear a coat in 5 years of blazer wearing. Even in snow, freezing temps and rain. The only compromise was to wear a thermal baselayer if there was ice outside.

He didn't wear the jumpers either - in fact I saw only ahandful of Y7 wearing the jumper underneath the blazer - everyone else just had the shirt.

Pencil case - my DS did use a pencil case -it was a plain black one - quite large to fit in all his maths stuff and calculator.

DS has small umbrella + bag to put it in. There genuinely isn't room in his locker for a coat unless it could fold down very small (not something you want to do in a teeny space with a wet coat).

He has a plastic wallet for his pens etc, though he mostly just keeps them in his blazer pocket. My DS wasn't that bothered about following the crowd until he started secondary - he still isn't really but there are some things that are apparently a huge no!

GasLightShining · 17/08/2016 15:02

My DC's uniform was a jumper rather than a blazer and they still never wore a coat. Hoodies weren't allowed but were taken off before they got off the bus. DD did use an umbrella but DS didn't bother

rosesarered9 · 25/08/2016 17:54

In my experience, secondary kids NEVER wear coats. Grin

228agreenend · 27/08/2016 13:44

DS 1 will wear his Superdry coat in freezing conditions, and that's it. Ds2 only wears a coat when it's bucketing down. Neither routinely carry coats
Or pack amass, and it's only in 'severe weather warning' weather that they concede.

Palin pencil cases, or maybe one with a sports logo at most.

user7755 · 27/08/2016 13:54

Ours aren't allowed to wear coats on school grounds and there's nowhere to keep their coats. DS took a coat once and lost it - took me going into school to get it back. I just leave him to go without it now.
