Here we are everyone.

OP posts:
IrianOfW · 25/05/2016 14:30

AQA Maths C2 was 'alright actually'

bigTillyMint · 25/05/2016 14:33

Liney, she was thinking about History until one of her AS level teachers managed to put her off (not intentionally, but because he's a twit!)
I think her AS level grades may give her a better idea, but I imagine something more rooted in practical application than academia might actually be better. She is going to 2 open days oop North (I am a Northerner, so would love her to study in the North!) with friends, so that might get her thinking - might manage to fit some others in after that too.

LineyReborn · 25/05/2016 14:38

Yes, I think looking at the AS grades first is a good idea. It'll help them develop that gut feel hopefully for what they want to do / succeed at retake

LittlehumHams · 25/05/2016 15:22

Dd3 has booked four open days (all after June 24th as she didn't want them to interfere with exams). Three are at the weekend which is easier.

Two northern universities and two southern with a range of grades.

OddBoots · 25/05/2016 15:37

DS has his last exam on 17th June then has a UCL open day on Sat 18th June and a Kings one on Sat 25th June. He wants to do computer science in London, he had a taster day at City a few weeks ago and is back for the open day in September.

His expected grades are about right for UCL with KCL as a good insurance but he likes the professional pathway option at City (which requires lower grades) so he might have a tough choice to make.

Auntpetunia2015 · 25/05/2016 16:14

Ah btm send her home. Cracking social life to be had here!!
I'm trying to convince DS that moving away is the best thing...not that I want to get rid of him you understand but I think here is so familiar and comfortable he'd never leave and whilst I've come back home I've lived elsewhere...and no where is better than Liverpool!! Grin

Horsemad · 25/05/2016 16:19

DS is booked onto the Liverpool open day - I would LOVE him to study there. I'm going to that one and meeting up with my sister that day- can't wait! Smile

bigTillyMint · 25/05/2016 16:57

AuntP and Horse, I am going to suggest us both going up and combining an open day visit with a visit to DM!

Hoping all is OK after History as she is not replying to my textsHmm

Horsemad · 25/05/2016 17:03

bTM - do it, I am so looking forward to my visit.

DS said History was 'ok, actually ', so fingers crossed your DD thought the same.

bigTillyMint · 25/05/2016 17:04

Sadly not - she just walked through the door and said it didn't go wellSad

Oh well, at least there's only one more tomorrow morning.

RoobyMyrtle · 25/05/2016 17:35

My daughter said History didn't go well either. She was actually looking forward to it as it's her best subject, but said the questions were not great & she ran out of time. Am going down the route of a. Forget about it - it's done and b. Better to have extra stuff in your head you didn't get a chance to write than write everything you know in 10 minutes and spend the rest of the time twiddling thumbs!

LineyReborn · 25/05/2016 17:38

I think you just have to move them on to the next exam, if you can.

JugglingFromHereToThere · 25/05/2016 18:22

Sounds very like my DD's experience with geography last week Rooby, she went into it so positively feeling well prepared but the things she was hoping for just didn't really come up, just lots of other mean stuff I think, and also ran out of time Sad As you say though maybe there was some good stuff in there - at least she was busy attempting answers throughout. Do you think at their age there's maybe some tendency to either over or under estimate how they actually did - based on whether an exam overall felt like it went well for them or badly. I think DD has been catastrophising a bit, quite often talking about failing this or that, and sometimes talking about re-doing the year. I'm hoping results will be slightly better than this?

bigTillyMint · 25/05/2016 18:55

DD said she didn't understand what the sources question was looking for, I think.

Juggling, my DD catastrophises too. She did it a lot last year but her results were really good. Not sure whether that will happen again this year as the AS level exams are a totally different kettle of fish, but no point in worrying about exams once they are done - gotta move on!

Abraid2 · 25/05/2016 19:16

Another catastrophiser daughter in this house, too.

Seems a little happier about OCR C2, tonight.

I have been through this before, with the added stress of a child going down with severe tonsillitis/query GF two days before AS levels started, two years ago, but it never seems to get easier!

Helenluvsrob · 25/05/2016 20:16

Maths was ok apart from the last 2 questions apparently. History dd though the questions were very difficult to really drill down to what they wanted you to say.

Her birthday tomorrow and Wuthering heights and gatsby - her least favourite texts.

That's it till the stats paper sometime next century ( ? 16 June ?).

I'm so over teens exams. So glad this is the last time !

IncandescentRain · 25/05/2016 20:46

Tears over maths paper here- Couldn't attempt at least 20 marks and was getting high 60s/ low 70s out of 75 in past papers. Looks like spanish and maths will both be fails. That's veterinary out the window

IncandescentRain · 25/05/2016 20:49

But then again, there were tears before the exam as apparently if you pull out of a school trip (that you never agreed to) to Africa for 3 weeks you'll be charged 2.5k that you don't have. Imagine saying that to a student that wanted 20 minutes with her maths teacher but was instead late to the exam

LineyReborn · 25/05/2016 20:52

Crikey. That's a shocker.

bigTillyMint · 25/05/2016 20:53

Helen, was your DD doing Russia? My DD has Gatsby and Streetcar tomorrow!

WTF Rain? Some of these teaches seem to have zero emotional literacy skillsConfused

IncandescentRain · 25/05/2016 21:04

It was a free trip for gifted pupils which is ironic when you think about it- I don't think the results of this exam will show her as 'gifted'. They wonder why they've never had a vet or med applicant before

HSMMaCM · 25/05/2016 21:32

DD has been catastrophising too. Her first psychology exam was a D/E and the second was worse.

Rain that's shocking about the trip and the time chosen to discuss it.

The dreaded drama exam was tonight. The BLEEP camera failed half way through DD's group and they might have to do it again !!!!

It was a great show though with 3 groups doing dramatic things that I really didn't understand Grin.

OP posts:
teta · 25/05/2016 21:48

Incandescent that really does not sound right. She actually went late into the exam with the threat of being charged £2500?Will she be charged that if she's subsequently shown not to be gifted? It all sounds pretty dodgy!
DD has worked out she's a got arround 79% in the C2 paper though she says with optimistic Marking. Is that good or bad?Dh is trying to ignore the whole thing and telling me not to discuss it with her.Although he's so detached he forgot she had an exam today and didn't even wish her good luck!

OddBoots · 25/05/2016 21:58

teta - for edexcel last year the boundary for an A was 59/75 (so 78.7%) and a B was (69.3%) 52/75 - we won't know how this year compares to last year but that sounds like it is probably A/B borderline.

IncandescentRain · 25/05/2016 22:07

We weren't even sure whether to accept the trip (sutton trust ends 12 hours before the flight leaves so that's a long period of time without being home) but it was booked before parents were even officially told.
We all feel hopeless here. This is the same school that pushed for 6 AS levels. We're all exhausted and just want to give up.
