I did muffin monster, in the dead of night when I couldn't sleep (on holiday, strange bed and DH snoring having had a drink or two!).

bruffin · 10/08/2015 16:10

I have come out in a stress rash Sad

Ds has repeated year 13 so really dont want the disappointment of last year.

DD gets her AS results on thursday was well and she thinks she has done really badly. She has a plan b as she has been offered an apprenticeship at the local SN school.

DH is waiting to hear if he has got the job he applied. He has been through 2 inteviews and they were interviewing one more person tomorrow.

NiceCardigan · 10/08/2015 17:06

I've managed to reset my stress levels a bit today which is a good job or I may have exploded. We're keeping busy and have the theatre booked for Wed evening to pass the time.

Good luck to your DH bruffin

Hi all! I hope you don't mind me coming on to pick your brains :)
Hi all, wondering if I could pick your brains.
DD has just got a job and been waiting for the health and safety/intro day before she can start and has just been told it's on Thursday 10-4.
Nightmare!
She does NOT feel positive about getting the grades (A*AA) is particularly worried about falling to a B in one, which went badly and would mean that she could miss her insurance too.
Her course isn't done in many unis and has small numbers so clearing is probably unrealistic-if she misses she would probably e-mail her Uni with her UMS ( they were asked to do this )and get one remarked if it's at all close.
So should she go? If she needs to resit she'll need a job but should she be doing other stuff on Thursday?

MrsBartlet · 10/08/2015 17:58

I don't think she should cathyandclaire. Can she do it another day? Surely they will understand that it is results day. If she does get the results she wants, it will probably be very difficult for her to concentrate and if she doesn't she will need to be contacting her unis and not worrying about being at work.

Littleham · 10/08/2015 18:01

My daughter was in this position last year and she needed to be in all day.

I have a very busy week with work this week which is helping keep the stress at bay. Dd has started a summer job today (hurrah!) She is largely working from home but it is helping to distract her as well. Hopefully, this could be a job for her holidays from university as well (if she is going that is Grin).

She also has friends coming over on Wednesday for a Sorkin-fest! They are going to watch as many episodes of Newsroom in a day as they can which should serve as a useful distraction.

Horsemad · 10/08/2015 18:11

I think she needs to not be working on Thursday Cathy.

MrsUltracrepidarian · 10/08/2015 18:55

Surely better to be working that day? On my A level results day I was (re-taking) my driving test and everyone else was at work. Since when did it become a sit-at-home-and-angst day?
DS will log-on to school intranet and get the results online and then go to work...

Littleham · 10/08/2015 19:00

It is fine if they get the results they want but if they are not so lucky they need to be home to make phone calls to clearing universities (or to their firm / Insurance if there is no update). That is why they need to keep the day free.

That's what DD said MrsU, it's tricky, there is no other intro day at least two weeks.
Her plan is:
Day before look at clearing (unlikely for her course)
On the day check UCAS track and A2 results online (school intranet) at 8am.
If news is bad e-mail college with copies of A2 UMS ( all contact details ready next to computer)
Drive to school and order re marks if necessary (forms already printed and chequebook ready!)
Phone insurance (numbers by phone)
Cry.
Go to work and distract herself.
< meanwhile Cathy collapses into heap>

cathyandclaire · 10/08/2015 19:05

No other intro day for at least two weeks

MrsUltracrepidarian · 10/08/2015 19:47

Cathy - your DD is very impressive!! With planning like that she will be a massive success whatever happens re Uni. Really good to have it all organised and under control. ( And hoping she won't actually need to do all that!)

AtiaoftheJulii · 10/08/2015 19:58

I guess if the plan all gets done in time then all's well - otherwise cathy I hope you're ready to sit by the phone pressing redial to her insurance if necessary Smile (See Littleham's story above!)

My dd has booked the Thursday and Friday off, although if things go well, she'll probably go in, but her arrangement is very flexible! With a set up like your dd's I think she should probably go and just get on with whatever is needed on the day.

GypsyFloss · 10/08/2015 20:23

MrsBartlett does Newsroom have the same dry humour that The West Wing has? I'm on my second round through the seasons of WW and need to find a new fix.

MrsBartlet · 10/08/2015 20:36

Yes it does Gypsy - it is great. We have just started watching The West Wing with dd (who has watched it before) and ds (his first time - he is 14). I am embarrassed to say it is about the 5th time of watching for dh and I Blush

GypsyFloss · 10/08/2015 20:50

It's on now and Mrs L is just about to die . I'm welling up just thinking about it...
I'll check out Newsroom. Wonder if he was off his head when he wrote that too? Grin

MrsBartlet · 10/08/2015 21:07

Enjoy!

Headofthehive55 · 10/08/2015 22:33

I think you need time to let it sink in. I don't think it's a good idea to work that day. My DD is very organised, like you plans were made etc, but in the event was really upset she ended up with her insurance not her firm. She wasn't in a fit state to work, yet she was in to do the course she wanted.

Horsemad · 10/08/2015 23:18

I've just read online that Univ of Sheffield are accepting Advance Registration for Clearing.
DS has just started looking at. Eeeek! Feeling very surreal now!

Just reading that Littleham Shock

cathyandclaire · 11/08/2015 06:31

Thanks all, you are of course right. There is an option of taking a different job elsewhere so I think she'll withdraw if needs be on Thursday.
That Mail article makes for grim reading ( and not just the grammar) Shock

MrsUltracrepidarian · 11/08/2015 07:14

I stopped reading after the headline 'Less Hmm places on offer' - less/fewer sets my teeth on edge!

bruffin · 11/08/2015 07:54

IF you havent got the grades for your firm or insurance course, then its unlikely you will have got the grades for a RG type course anyway. The article does say there are places in the lower unis anyway.
There is no point going into clearing just for the sake of going to uni this year. Its worth taking a step back and taking stock of the situation.

We were in this situation last year and DS decided to go back to school retake a couple of A2s and reapply this year. He got a much better offer from his firm last year (A*AA down to AAB) and new offers from "good unis" for his course plus an unconditional from an expoly uni. He didnt include the unconditional in his firm and insurance and they have written to him this weekend saying they have still got plenty of spaces available. He apply through clearing there if he has another disaster. He has enough UCAS points for that course.
He has had a good year and made new friends and I was glad he didnt go last September as my Mum died in October and it would have hit him hard if he had just left home.
