If you had the choice between a place at a leading independent school with a scholarship and a top grammar school, which would you choose and why? Fees affordable but not insignificant.

And private schools don't necessarily offer from waiting lists at this late stage do another child won't necessarily get an offer if she declines the private offer this late. It is part of the reason why many private schools ask for deposits within 10 days of an offer being made.

If the OP has paid a private school deposit, then they are now liable to the first term's fees as well (which will be in full - scholarships are not usually deducted when fees are in lieu of notice). Given the timing therefore it is reasonable to assume that this is either a late grammar offer, or someone feeling hopeful about the tests for entry next year.

I hope it is somebody feeling hopeful for next year rather than somebody holding onto two places this late.
