I thought the real test for affluence for any area is three full size "Waitrose's surrounded by 6 half size ones within a 10 mile radius ! This is witnessed in the "Golden Triangle" of North Cheshire and despite only having 5% of the national grocery market ( OU DD 102 Kantar 2013) Tesco 30% National) has probably 50 % of the local market.

Incidentally since this thread has been "derailed" the town that Tesco has the highest market share is Perth with 60% the lowest is Harrogate with just 1% which probably means that Tesco target more socially mixed areas for placement of their stores. John Lewis Partnership must target areas with a higher disposable income, or with a greater number of A or B socio economic residents.

But the Supermarket tests are middle class bilge

the uber upper class Mum of an ex of mine had never been grocery shopping in her life
she phoned Fortnums with her guest list and they delivered the food
and then her chef turned up to cook it

happygardening · 01/01/2015 20:59

On my 25 mile drive to work I pass within close proximity of 5 Waitrose's and two half size ones. There are four more within 20 miles in the opposite direction

smokepole · 01/01/2015 21:01

Talkinpeace. With the exception of a few Russians , real Upper class , rich or celebrities what percentage of people can do that !

happygardening · 01/01/2015 21:02

Actually in my area the uber wealthy patronise small local niche artisan shops usually selling organic food.

handcream · 01/01/2015 21:05

Slough is an overcrowded mess with lots of illegals, I saw a number of them when I sat for 4 hours at the NHS drop in centre. How anyone can think that Slough is up and coming really needs their head examined!

TalkinPeace · 01/01/2015 21:05

smoke
her son was a scummy git that my parents hated
but she had the domestic skills of - well zilch
BUT
in the 70's early 80's she did not strike me as odd this is in the Saudi, not Russian days
and my primary school was full of such people

old style shopping was "get the staff to do it"
seriously, only typing it this evening did I realise how odd it was

happygardening · 01/01/2015 21:05

My DM always told me a Fortnums is a bit like Harrods; rather naff.

handcream · 01/01/2015 21:07

The surrounding area is completely different, Windsor, Gerrards Cross, Beaconsfield etc are some of the most expensive areas outside of London.

TalkinPeace · 01/01/2015 21:09

Ooh, Happy I'm old school : pre Fayed Harrods was just, well just
since he's gone, both of them have improved

peteneras · 01/01/2015 21:44

Needs their head examined, handcream? Perhaps you should be the first one to have it done or are you already doing it at the NHS drop in centre?

How on earth can anyone call total strangers 'illegals' is beyond me. Would true illegals queue up of all places in a NHS unit where thorough checks of residence status are made before treatment? Other than demonstrating your racist attitude which is what I believe your whole argument about Slough is truly about, your slanderous remarks about total strangers are totally uncalled for. Yes, a trip to the head doctor is not before time!

handcream · 01/01/2015 22:16

They did queue up and when they were asked for proof of address they couldn't provide it! They then had to leave. We were all in a open plan waiting room - I thought you would know that seeing as you are claiming to know all about the area.

Is it racist to question why people are trying to use a service they are not entitled to use......

peteneras · 01/01/2015 22:34

There are loads of even home grown Britons who for one reason or other cannot provide proof of address. Halifax Finchley branch last month refused me service because I could not provide proof of address (I had just moved house). That doesn't make me or them 'illegals'. When I was living in Slough decades ago, I rented a room from a Pakistani landlady who spoke not a word of English. I bet she could not provide 'proof of address' if asked to and yet, she owned three properties!

handcream · 01/01/2015 22:40

If someone chooses to not learn English or cannot work out that you will need some evidence that you are who you are what on earth are we expected to do. Just let them go through regardless?

happygardening · 01/01/2015 22:48

handcream having worked extensively with "illegals" (what a hideous and insulting term, these so called "illegals"are just like us) I'm afraid I feel duty bound to inform you that they are entitled to care from the NHS as well they should be. We are not as yet some tin pot dictatorship where only the chosen few get proper care, neither have we been completely taken over by bigots like Farage, health care is free at the point of delivery to all, not just those a politician or administrator has deemed to be legal.

happygardening · 01/01/2015 22:51

You do not need to prove your address to access health care. The unconscious patient in A and E with no relatives/friends would be really stuck if he did have to before receiving treatment.
Health care workers do not want to be put in a position where they have to query eligibility for health care before administering it.

woodhill · 01/01/2015 22:56

I can believe it handcream. I haven't been to Slough since 1993 but can't imagine it's that great, I do drive around its edge to Windsor occasionally.

smokepole · 01/01/2015 22:57

Talkinpeace. Warning !I went to my mail box yesterday. I saw a package with my address on (luckily not my name) on the package , on the the side of the package it said "if unposted, please return to the Queen of The Dales Harrogate North Yorkshire". In the package they were offering up to 75% off on their September "Selection" process . According to their "Unsolicited" package and accompanying DVD, they are the best in the North and third in the whole of the United kingdom.

Seriously how on Earth where do they get their information to send nonsense . I throw the package in the bin. The Institution is just wasting its money sending it to me.

People need to be aware of that place "Fly Posting" everybody and everywhere.

happy, the unconscious patient, legal or illegal, carried horizontally on a stretcher into a hospital’s A&E department is called an Emergency! No, they do not have to provide evidence of any sort (humanly and physically impossible when unconscious) to receive treatment. But when they recover and found to be ineligible for free NHS treatment, then I’m afraid they’ll be asked to pay and quite rightly so.

littleducks · 01/01/2015 23:18

To be fair I don't think that anyone was referring true emergencies in A&E.

I did have to take proof of address (and ID and citizenship) when registering with my GP and at my appointment for a antenatal booking in at local hospital. This didn't happen six years ago when I had previous baby and registered with GP and MW you just needed an NHS number then.

handcream · 01/01/2015 23:23

Just to clarify- I didn't mean true emergencies. I believe the drop in centre at Slough is used by people who wrongly assume it's a place they can get medical attention without any questions being asked. You either give your GPs details or proof of address to allow yourself to be registered there.

handcream · 01/01/2015 23:30

I do think that anyone coming to this country needs to prove they have private medical care already rather like they do in Australia.

The NHS is seen as very attractive if everyone and anyone regardless of status is allowed to access it. I agree it's not the role of the hospitals to police this but I wouldn't dream of going to another country without proper healthcare.

Why is it so different in the UK?

TheOriginalSteamingNit · 01/01/2015 23:32

Because we are nicer?

happygardening · 01/01/2015 23:41

Illegal immigrants held in detention centres are entitled to free health care this includes routine non urgent care, dental care and seeing an optician for eye tests even glasses are paid for. I do not have a problem with this.
Illegal immigrants living in the community also receive free health care, most attend A and E depts for even minor complaints as they are usually not registered with a GP. Many big A and E depts run GP type surgeries for not just illegal immigrants but others who are not likely to be registered; homeless, tourists, etc. As all parents of boarding school children know GP's will also temporarily register patients they do not ask to see proof of address.
In the NHS currently patients are asked if they have lived in the UK for over a year if they have not nursing/admin staff are meant to pass on their details to PALS or what ever they are called these days who could then chase them for the cost of care. But number 1 admin staff and nurse (who are too busy) often don't even other to ask the question or pass on the persons details and 2 PALS don't often chase them up and even if they do it is unlikely that they will get the money back, illegal immigrants frequently move around, even if the address given is correct at the time it is likely that by the time someone actually tries to get the money it won't be. Also the reality is that most illegal immigrants have very little money, few are raking in money the lucky ones work for friends and family but often for poor wages and the unlucky one gang masters for terrible money and as a friend and wise solicitor once told me you cannot get money where it doesn't exist.
Illegal immigrants are people just like us, they too have hopes dreams and aspirations for themselves and their families, many are exceedingly well educated, they often live in the UK for many years without getting caught they are usually working, they are not claiming benefits because obviously they can't, or living in social housing but getting some sort of wage managing to live (just) and sending any spare home to their families. In a civilised society we should not begrudge anyone access to health care even if they live in Slough.

happygardening · 01/01/2015 23:54

handcream at the risk of pointing out the bloody obvious illegal immigrants are not going to get insurance to cover health care!
I doubt when they are about to hide in the back of a lorry coming in through Dover the first question the lorry driver asks them is have they got health care insurance?
You may not dream of going to another country without adequate insurance but you have not paid somebody a large some of money to smuggle you out of your own country, escaping extreme poverty at best often war and persecution and probably still owe money, made a treacherous journey across land and sea and hidden in a lorry to get here. Having arrived you could be forced into prostitution or basically slavery knowing if you run away you family back in your own country will be punished. Adequate health care insurance is frankly not even on your radar.
Wake up these are illegal immigrants we're talking about here not middle class students taking a gap year in Australia.
