Not happy - contraception posters in school toilets and gen noticeboards

Not happy when DS communicated to me that so called contraception posters have been placed in school toilets, as part of a supposed school campaign to prevent pregnancies, stds, etc. it is wrong. Does not acknowledging underage sex show crass stupidity in recognising that it exists. Why not have posters to communicate the right reasons for abstinence. Better still, why not remove the posters. Very, very pissed off parents.

Not just you

KatieKaye · 22/11/2014 12:52

definitely not just you.

"morays"?? Are you in the middle of the ocean, watching moray eels, Portico? Perhaps you mean "mores"?

See, that's the thing about education - it does not mean just blindly following the school of moray eels, but actually equipping children with the facts and encouraging them to think for themselves. Not "just say no" - but "let's talk about this." Giving children information about contraception does not mean they are going to start bonking at the age of 12 any more than teaching them history means they are going to re-enact some of the bloodier battles.

It's information - broadening their knowledge. At home you can talk about the virtues of abstinence and your moral code but trying to deny the dissemination of factual information is counterproductive at best.

Very good post katiekaye!

Personally, I choose to follow the sharks instead of the prevailing morays. Morays are scary and hide in caves and pounce on you. Sharks are out in the open, you can see them coming for you.

Four125 · 22/11/2014 14:05

I think all students need access to information about contraception, give them the information to stay healthy and make the right choices.
Yes?

If contraception health care and medicines of the same standard had been around in the 1900s I'm sure many lives would have been saved and millions of people would have lived happier, healthier lives.

Gileswithachainsaw · 22/11/2014 14:19

I sincerely hope that the op doesn't complain and get them taken down.

If it makes one girl call up and use the services provided and stay safe that's one less school drop out. One less baby stuck in a cycle of teen pregnancy and few job prospects. One less girl listening to her boyfriend talk crap about not getting pregnant if you shower after.

no one wants to think of their children having sex at such a young age. but sheltering her from all information and denying her the right to access contraception won't change anything. It will just result in her being at risk.

She's exactly the kind of parent these posters are designed for the kids off. who may well have not been allowed to participate in the classes and are unaware of what they can do to protect themselves and where they can go for help.

roguedad · 22/11/2014 14:27

Be grateful that the school is encouraging kids who are bound to experiment to do so more safely and protect against both STDs and pregnancy. Putting up a contraception poster is not an encouragement to have sex. Nothing is stopping you telling your kids to abstain for as long as possible.

portico · 22/11/2014 14:28

Sorry. Typo on the smartphone when typing. Mores. No morays. I stand corrected.

I do not mind a a contrary opinion. But the spite of some of you posters when posting beggars belief. Not sure you lot appreciate a contrary point. Let's take the pi## out of a supposedly discordant view. And wait, let's do it in concert. Maybe, I don't have an anything in common with you lot. Thank god.

Goodbye. And may i ask the nest of vipers to rein in the sarcasm with any other supposedly dissenting posters. Just a thought.

I used to be a school nurse until very recently. We rolled out toilet door posters in our schools because it was what the children had asked for. They wanted to access contraception but they didn't want to do it by asking staff at school for our number. Having a poster with our number on the back of a toilet door meant that the kids could write down our number without anyone else knowing.
The only school that refused to participate was the local catholic school which incidentally had a teenage pregnancy the same year this was rolled out.
If kids don't have the information about contraception then it doesn't mean they will abstain, it means they won't use contraception.

flowery · 22/11/2014 14:31

"Not sure you lot appreciate a contrary point."

I appreciate a contrary point when someone takes the trouble to explain it. Which you haven't OP.

Why do you think pretending underage sex doesn't happen is preferable? What do you think that approach will achieve?

WhereTheWildlingsAre · 22/11/2014 14:36

I think it's lazy debating skills to lump everyone together as one massive bad guy and slate it... Rather than engage with the contrary ideas expressed in response to the post you started by very separate individuals.

Flowery is exactly right.

I went to catholic school. The priests actually told us about contraception. Obviously as an aside to sex inside marriage procreation life is god given etc..

Reasoning being if you're going to have sex outside marriage you might as well break all the laws and use contraception.

KatieKaye · 22/11/2014 15:54

What beggars belief to me is someone advocating wilfull ignorance.
The human race exists because we have sexual urges. We need to equip teens not only with a personal moral code but also facts about safe sex for their own protection whether now or in the future.
Exactly why do you have such an issue with your son knowing about safe sex? Do you want to put him at risk through ignorance?

Tron123 · 22/11/2014 16:22

I think the op has a point interms of some of the posts, healthy debate and discussion yes, ridicule, insults and judgment about the parenting skills of the op is not helpful and does not encourage discussion.

TalkinPeace · 22/11/2014 16:22

OP
Just let your son watch these
all will be well
and done by very clever chaps indeed

marcopront · 24/11/2014 02:00

A question for the OP.

What is your opinion on the anti drink driving adverts that come on the TV?

VenusRising · 24/11/2014 02:13

Is this OP for real? This should be in classics, or anti classics.

Are we waiting up to see how Noelle is going to be dealt with, rotfl.
Seriously rotfl, and I've never typed that before.

Bravo OP you are very funny.

Happy to be part of the nest of morays Grin

PigletJohn · 24/11/2014 02:18

I always insist that under-17's mustn't be sold copies of the Highway Code, and mustn't watch road safety vids. Because they are too young to legally drive cars.

pumpkinsweetie · 24/11/2014 06:32

Stupid post, better for a teen to see a poster and use that information in their hour of need, rather than end up pregnant & get an STI.
If a teenager is going to have sex, the poster is helpful, if they are not going to have sex, the poster isn't going to lead to them having it!!!

pointythings · 24/11/2014 22:21

I'm Dutch. I see sex education working every day in my country. I provide my DDs with sex education because I don't trust the schools to be thorough enough, open enough or comprehensive enough.

I guess that makes me a moray.
Thanks for a really good laugh, OP.
