Well, I filled up the other one, so here's a nice new one to get us through dropping subjects, Uni open days, personal statement writing, and UCAS applications Grin

Plenty of Wine and Brew and (nicely-intentioned) Biscuits available!

circular DS's two faves so far are the one where the accommodation was not fab, so it tells me he's very keen on their departments which is better than judging purely on the rooms I guess!

Horsemad · 18/09/2014 21:58

So: DS has decided he WILL have his Chem remarked now Hmm

Almost 40 for this to be done Shock

stonecircle · 18/09/2014 22:55

Gosh he'll have to be quick Horsemad - deadline tomorrow. DS finally asked teachers's views on a couple of scripts today (with me texting him throughout the morning to remind him) but they both agreed not worth a remark. I'm pleased we asked or I'd always be wondering. They said might be a few extra marks in both but not worth the risk.

Stonecircle, he always leaves things to the last minute, absolutely infuriates me!
It was submitted yesterday, fingers x'd he gets a couple more marks to boost it up to a B.

Hi
Seems like no time since I was on a previous version of this thread with DD2. Now I have DS in Y13.
He got A*BB in his AS for maths/physics/chemistry (also BC for other subjects he is dropping), and is hoping to do electronic engineering.
Does anyone know about the relative merits of applying for Meng vs Beng courses? Is it better to do a Beng course at a higher-rated uni or a Meng at one with lower entry criteria?
Any views appreciated. Thanks

Waitingaround · 22/09/2014 10:46

seimum why doesn't he initially do a bsc from the best university he can and then apply for a masters once he has a good degree.

muffinmonster · 22/09/2014 11:15

seimum, most unis that offer both BEng and MEng will allow you to start the BEng and transfer to MEng after (usually) 2nd year if you perform well enough in the exams. So maybe it would be better to go for the BEng at a better uni.

I don't think a BSc allows you to proceed to an MEng - it's not an engineering degree. But I don't know for sure.

Waitingaround · 22/09/2014 11:17

sorry meant BEng Smile

unweavedrainbow · 22/09/2014 11:23

The beauty of the MEng is that the fourth year is covered through Student Finance. There is no direct funding for separate Masters degrees and the competitive funding is very spare, even in the sciences. It's worth applying for the BEng and switching over though, lots of people do, and the unis are set up for it.

Littleham · 22/09/2014 17:24

Does anyone know if universities hold interviews for History applicants or do they just offer / reject without seeing the candidates? I know this really varies from subject to subject.

unis and subjects that went to clearing this year

The trouble with looking at that information is that it may be completely different next year. There is no data produced to tell you how far the grades dropped. I do have the old newspapers if there is a particular university you are looking at (& course code).

webwiz · 22/09/2014 20:16

I would assume that if a uni/subject was in clearing this year they would adjust how many offers they made in the next application cycle.

boys3 · 22/09/2014 20:34

Littleham DS1 off to do history shortly as are several of his friends, aside from Oxbridge no interviews anywhere else they all applied to. This covers the likes of Durham, Warwick, Leeds, Sheffield, Nottingham, UEA, Leicester, Birmingham, Newcastle, Northumbria, York, Lincoln

Hi Everyone! Went to York today, to the newer Heslington East campus. I thought it was lovely and DS did too (shock, horror!) Very new modern buildings, lovely accommodation. Close to the main campus.

Didn't see the Heslington West campus.

Littleham · 22/09/2014 22:07

Mumslife - yes, Keele for History (& History and Politics) was in clearing this year.

Boys3 - Thanks for that information. That's good news....hoping to avoid too many trips! Two of dd2's choices are on your list.

seimum · 22/09/2014 23:06

Thanks for the advice Waitingaround, Muffinmonster and unweavedrainbow.
So if you transfer from a Beng to an Meng part way, do you still get the 4 years of student loan?

Littleham - my DD2 did history & politics 3 years ago, and was not asked for interview anywhere (she had offers from Lancaster, UAE, Keele, Oxford Brookes)

We were at York yesterday. Heslington West campus is very scruffy compared to Heslington East and the accommodation we saw was the worst of any we have seen - all the new accommodation on Heslington East looks lovely though. Anyway DD has written it off her list of choices as the subject talk made it clear that the course isn't what she wants.
She liked Warwick and so did I - accommodation varies quite a lot in price but we liked the fact that second years have the option of going into university managed private accommodation locally. University had a very welcoming feel to it and the pastoral care seems good - the year abroad programme for MFL seems well-organised.
So the good news is out of 7 universities visited she now has a top three to put on the UCAS form and she is going to have to choose two more without visiting because we are DONE on Open Days!

muffinmonster · 23/09/2014 13:55

seimum, yes, I believe that you are funded all the way through an MEng, because it counts as an undergraduate degree (that is, you don't have to complete a BEng to do it). Just found this on Warwick's website:

Is it possible to transfer from a BEng to an MEng?
Yes. To allow students to benefit from the advantages of the MEng, transfer is encouraged for those who have met the required academic standards at the end of the second year, typically a 60% average for the second year. Transfer from the BEng to the MEng at the end of second year is common at many UK Universities and the Student Loans Company have a lot of experience of dealing with this change for UK/EU students.

Fairenuff · 23/09/2014 17:28

MissM what are her top 3? My dd is looking at MFL too but we still have some open days to do before she finally decides.
