Well, I filled up the other one, so here's a nice new one to get us through dropping subjects, Uni open days, personal statement writing, and UCAS applications Grin

Plenty of Wine and Brew and (nicely-intentioned) Biscuits available!

Top three are Nottingham, Oxford and Warwick - in that order! She is now considering putting two of Kent, Manchester and Sheffield as her last two choices so if anyone has any info on these that would be really helpful. Where is your DD looking at Fairenuff? We were impressed by the MFL talks at Nottingham and Warwick in terms of the course content - lots of lit and culture as well as language and good translation modules too. Also both seemed well organised for the year abroad.
Great news today - DD has come home to say the results of her history remark are back and she has gone up 10 UMS points from B to A. Still waiting on the English remark. How can the exam boards make so many mistakes?

Fairenuff · 23/09/2014 18:27

That's great news MrsM but I agree these mistakes should not be happening.

My dd is also considering Warwick but the open day clashes with Cardiff which she also wants to visit so we may have to do one of them informally.

Her top choice at the moment is Southampton due to the flexibility of courses.

Dd's UCAS form has been submitted! The school have to add their references and predicted grades and then they send it on. She has applied to Cambridge, Durham, Exeter, Warwick and York to study English.

MrsBartlet · 23/09/2014 21:10

Thanks, mumslife. Does your dd have any ideas for her last 2 places?

MrsBartlet · 23/09/2014 21:11

cross-posts!

webwiz · 23/09/2014 21:37

DS's choices are identical Mrs Bartlet!

MrsBartlet · 24/09/2014 06:05

Excellent webwiz - they may end up at the same place, on the same course!

The deadline at DD's school is this Friday for Oxbridge, medicine and vet science only. For the others, it is not for ages, but DD wants to submit hers early. So far, her final draft of her statement has now been emailed to school and she has been allocated a 'referee'. She has a list of 6 unis so needs to 'drop' 1, so she is going to draw up a list of pros & cons. All 6 interview for her course. So far, we have: Manchester, UEA, Birmingham, Bath, Cardiff and Nottingham. I think the next thing to consider is the music provision for non-music degree students.
Mumslife - Keele campus is lovely. DD would just prefer a City uni but Keele is one that she would be happy to go to through clearing - she has been drawing up a 'clearing list' too!

hellsbells99 · 24/09/2014 08:04

Missmilliament - DD loved Manchester as it felt 'busy'. One of her friends started last week and is having a fab time on Freshers week - but she is a bit of a party animal! Manchester is not a nice campus university - although some of the accommodation is on a student village.

MissMillament · 24/09/2014 08:31

Thanks Hellsbells. I think Manchester doesn't sound as if DD would like it then - she likes campus universities and doesn't do parties! She hated Cardiff too, which lots of people love.
Your DD sounds very organised. I have spoken to DD about a clearing list but she is not ready to think about that yet!

MissMillament · 24/09/2014 08:33

Mumslife - sorry about your DD's history remark. Will she retake the exam or can she still get the grade she wants without having to do that?

hellsbells99 · 24/09/2014 08:56

Mumslife - DD loved Cardiff, but then she does love 5 out of her top 6. She went with her friend on the train and they spent a few hours in the City after visiting the uni - went for a meal and shopping. Said the shopping was great!
Nottingham she was less sure about, but the course is very good there and the uni has a fantastic reputation for her course. She didn't think Nottingham was as friendly. The lecturers doing the talks did seem as though they were doing you a favour! She also thought the campus was very spread out. We didn't look round the self-catering 'village' though and I think that would probably suit DD more than the halls.

AtiaoftheJulii · 24/09/2014 09:35

DD1 has school deadline tomorrow (although I can't believe they will actually process everyone's on one day!). She's applying for Classics at Oxford, Bristol, Glasgow, St Andrews and A N Other to be decided at a later date, possibly Swansea. PS is on its 3rd iteration, one last tweak tomorrow I think is her plan. I'll be glad when it's in.

cathyandclaire · 24/09/2014 10:09

Hi there, we're in the middle of all the turmoil too. DD's PS is in for better or worse and three on the list at the moment. She's waiting before adding more but her courses interview/offer late so unlikely to get anything before UCAS deadline. Cambridge, Warwick and Bristol on the list so far.
DD loved Warwick on Saturday and frankly after the subject talk I was ready to sign up too Grin

Loved Uea mumslife. Very ugly buildings but lovely campus. She stayed for 2 days on a summer school. Everyone was very friendly. Norwich was lovely too. Only problem is that it is a long way from home.
Bath was quite ugly too - very similar, and again on a nice campus.

Horsemad · 24/09/2014 12:56

I met a lady on an open day recently who has triplets applying for uni! Shock

Can't imagine going through 3 applications at once!

Waitingaround · 24/09/2014 13:24

horsemad good to hear your Ds liked York- mine wants to apply for comp science there too- but didn'take it to an open day
So all feedback gratefully received Smile

Waitingaround · 24/09/2014 13:24

Sorry not take but make

Horsemad · 24/09/2014 13:39

Hi Waitingaround, the whole new Heslington East where Comp Sci is is very new so looks very stark and modern. Not landscaped totally yet, so looks a bit bare. Nice lake feature in front of the 'Hub' where the cafe and enterprise centre is.

Comp Sci dept very modern building. Already upgrading their computers! Had a good dept tour, well equipped and friendly staff. Subject talks were good also.

Accommodation is lovely! Oldest is 4/5 yrs old. Good size rooms. No catered colleges, large kitchens. There are en suite or shared bathrooms (shared between 3 or 4 depending on which block).
Only 15 mins walk from Heslington West and connected by off road cycle track and uni bus service.
Brand new sports village (leisure centre) for students to use.

I'd love DS to go there, I could 'see' him there, iyswim!

Certainly one of my faves and only just over 2hrs away (not that DS is bothered about that!)
