Wellington College - Resources and fees

Am I a bad person if I resent the fact that other schools tell their children to access Wellington intranet site for teaching resources?

My OH and I have to scrimp and save for the fees but if anybody can access the resources, especially Biology and RS that my daughter studies why do we bother?? I know that resources are only a part of it but when I heard that other schools send their students to the website because some depts do not request a log in I got annoyed. . though I probably shouldn't!

Would I have been better off sending her to a less expensive school, getting tutors and then using the resources? If we had gone down the state route we could have afforded many more enrichment opportunities too. . .

Sorry for the rant but do any other Wellington parents feel the same??

Could you be more specific as to how to get into these resources? I just had a look around the subject list on the intranet but couldn't get very far without a log in .

Could you provide a link so that we can see how bad this is ?

There's your answer. Assuming your like AS (I personally can't stand the man) and all that Wellington has to offer then surely then this is an insignificant detail. You are paying for the whole package I know I am.
My DS is not at Wellington and I don't have the faintest idea if resources are available on line or who can access them but it they're good and useful to others who may not be in such a fortunate position why shouldn't they access them it's makes no difference to my DS.

I think the teachers are brilliant and the resources are great. . .but I do not think many other schools are so open with their resources. . .

I am not saying this is bad . . .maybe the RS dept in particular are being generous? There is even examples of students named work on the site too as examples of excellent work. . .I would have thought that this posed a child safety concern?? I would not like exam scripts with my daughters name being available to anyone who is able to google. . . . .

You have to log onto some depts but not others. . .

Have you raised the issue with the school? Given the vast majority of the the departments do require log-in isn't more likely that this is an unintentional error/oversight by the department involved rather than a huge conspiracy against the parents?

You mention Biology - that department seems to need a password for most of the information (other than items which I think are in the public domain anyway).

Your approach to this seems a little bizarre to be honest.

Loads of schools have decent websites with resources on them (including many state schools). Eton College has some great Classics resources freely available, but I've never heard the same accusation raised there...

My DS does not go here but I have a friend whose daughter does. She has never mentioned this as something she has had a problem with or even something she was aware of and we had many conversations over wine about education! I do not think she would be overly concerned but imagine that there would be quite a few others who would feel as you do.

The resources do look very good though but I did see those answers with student names on another page of that thread. . .I agree that is inappropriate and would also not like my children's work displayed but it is possible/likely that those students and their parents have given their consent. . . I hope.

I might be reading too much into your post and that you are worried about if the fees are worth it? I say if your daughter is happy, if you want to send her there, and if you can afford it (without too much hardship) then do not second guess yourself!

Wow, this is bothering you? Loads of schools share best practice. I suppose as a fee payer you can ask for access to be restricted. I think it sounds like you are not happy with the 'value for money' you receive from the school.

I agree that if names are displayed, permission should have been sort.

The resources are a bit odd. I was going to use some in a lesson and couldn't fathom them.

Don't mistake the fact they are on the web for them being good.

If this has led you to question your decision of school, then (sorry) it probably isn't the right fit for you.

Will your DD manage there until the next natural breakpoint? What schools do you think are likely to fit your ethos better?

I think I it is a great idea and one that other public schools should copy.
Wellington College gave a bursary for my son, and 2 others, from state schools to go on a week's outward bound course. He had to work very hard on his application to get it. I think they do it every year. I dare say you wouldn't like that either!

Sharing resources is very good practice and I.think I would be a bit concerned if a school didn't do so (it generally happens when schools aren't confident their resources are good enough) as previous poster said resource sharing happens on a massive scale on the TES website and is a very positive thing.

I am surprised that you didn't do your homework before you sent her- it states quite plainly that they are a leading teaching school and share their resources with other teachers on TES. It seems admirable to me, maybe the ethos of the school is wrong for you if you have such a 'dog in the manger' attitude. I only know one other set of parents who have a child there and they are quite happy. I really can't see why anyone wouldn't be.
