Wellington College - Resources and fees

Am I a bad person if I resent the fact that other schools tell their children to access Wellington intranet site for teaching resources?

My OH and I have to scrimp and save for the fees but if anybody can access the resources, especially Biology and RS that my daughter studies why do we bother?? I know that resources are only a part of it but when I heard that other schools send their students to the website because some depts do not request a log in I got annoyed. . though I probably shouldn't!

Would I have been better off sending her to a less expensive school, getting tutors and then using the resources? If we had gone down the state route we could have afforded many more enrichment opportunities too. . .

Sorry for the rant but do any other Wellington parents feel the same??

Don't sweat the small things in life!
The website will be a very small part of your DDs education, Wellington is an amazing school!
Private schools have a duty to be charitable and generally ensure the gap between them and state doesn't grow and add to the issues of educational disadvantage in the UK.
A child whose parents are unable to afford or even dream of sending their DC to wellington may be accessing the website and it may be really helping her education and it may contribute, just a small amount, to that child getting the grades needed for them to move onto university eventually and break the cycle of poverty in their family...

We have, overall, had a good experience and there has been great support offered in the lead up to her exams!

I don't think Wellington has a reputation for being charitable. It has a very small bursary pot unlike other big names which is mainly only available to those who win scholarships/exhibitions etc and is keen to channel it's money into publicity stunts like children from poor state schools spending a week at Wellington and then getting it on the news. A pointless exercise IMO.
There are many mixed reviews of Wellington Academy.

Refreshing to have an apology! I really wouldn't worry, she must be doing very well to even have got a place.

Yeah sorry if I seemed odd. . .was just having a moment. I have more exam stress than my DD and was just feeling uncharitable about a comment someone had made to me. . very childish I know!

Why would you put a link up if you were concerned about child protection?

As Wellington seem to have a reputation for being charitable (for instance the Wellington Academy) isnt this just an extension of that? Sharing good fortune with others less lucky.

Our local comprehensive has an English teacher who shares amazing resources on YouTube. I know lots of people in private schools who use them. Fancy that.

A bit bizarre to think that paying for education means locking everyone else out. Also OP doesn't seem to value it as she thinks online + tutor is as good as being there and her DD is just a clean slate to pour things in so she churns them out for an exam.

You need to log in- I don't need it so I don't know ,but I would think you can email and ask.

More links then?

I haven't managed to find anything more than a clear but rather skewed 'Dummies Guide To' type resource.

The OP is so bizarre that I assumed it was a reverse post designed exactly to publicise the site and it's resources!

I have never thought of looking in the TES site, of course many teachers share resources, like they used to when every LEA had a Teacher's Centre.

I wouldn't be keen on named pieces of work being publicly available, but who knows, maybe they have given permission and it is like putting something on your CV.

Is the whole post a viral marketing project?

The good thing from this thread is that it has publicised the site! Hopefully it will be used by even more.

I am surprised that you didn't do your homework before you sent her- it states quite plainly that they are a leading teaching school and share their resources with other teachers on TES. It seems admirable to me, maybe the ethos of the school is wrong for you if you have such a 'dog in the manger' attitude. I only know one other set of parents who have a child there and they are quite happy. I really can't see why anyone wouldn't be.

Sharing resources is very good practice and I.think I would be a bit concerned if a school didn't do so (it generally happens when schools aren't confident their resources are good enough) as previous poster said resource sharing happens on a massive scale on the TES website and is a very positive thing.

They share resources with poor people?
How ghastly!

I think I it is a great idea and one that other public schools should copy.
Wellington College gave a bursary for my son, and 2 others, from state schools to go on a week's outward bound course. He had to work very hard on his application to get it. I think they do it every year. I dare say you wouldn't like that either!

If this has led you to question your decision of school, then (sorry) it probably isn't the right fit for you.

Will your DD manage there until the next natural breakpoint? What schools do you think are likely to fit your ethos better?

Plus op go and look at the TES resource data base -your greedy nimby head will explode

The resources are a bit odd. I was going to use some in a lesson and couldn't fathom them.

Don't mistake the fact they are on the web for them being good.

Wow, this is bothering you? Loads of schools share best practice. I suppose as a fee payer you can ask for access to be restricted. I think it sounds like you are not happy with the 'value for money' you receive from the school.

I agree that if names are displayed, permission should have been sort.
