Waiting for DS1's Gcses results on 22nd of August. He did really well last year but, all the talk of moving grade boundaries has got me worried. Fingers are very tightly crossed for maths as this is the subject he struggles with most.

OP posts:
basildonbond · 22/08/2013 14:46

Well ds1 managed to pull it out of the bag - 3 A, 4 A, 2 B and one rogue result because the exam board lost one of his exam papers - school says that should eventually be an A at least once sorted out as he did well in the rest of the papers - one of the As is one mark off an A and one of the Bs is 2 marks off an A so both those being sent off to be remarked - phew is all I can say!!

He'd spent most of Y11 mucking around for some unknown reason and only started to get his head down after Easter

He's a bit disappointed by some of the results in subjects where hed been hoping for A*s but accepts that if he hadn't had to basically do a crash course in physics, chemistry and history he didn't have enough time to devote to some of the other subjects

He is hugely appreciative of all the efforts his teachers made to help him turn things around - they never gave up on him even when he was being a prize prat ... He's looking forward to sixth form and says he's learned his lesson - we shall see...

Just looked and DD's D in history......was 2 marks off a C and her coursework that she had been told had been marked and moderated at 35 is down as 27, which means that she should have had a B.

Definitely going for the remark but it has totally bollocksed up her plans :(

GredandForge this looks like too much of a coincidence...., one mark off for many

tapdancingmum · 22/08/2013 14:56

Well DD1 got Distinction Star for both Business and Dance, B for both English lit and language (only 4 points off an A so a bit disappointed), Biology & Physics C, Chemistry D ( we always knew this would be low), Food B and a 2 for Enterprise and Employability (don't know what this means but apparently it's good). She already has a B in Maths but did the first unit of A-level and got a U - good job she hasn't chosen that for A-level Wink

She had a major breakdown when we got home and said it wasn't good enough and why was she in the top sets for everything when she has failed so badly and what was the point of going back Shock.

But - we have just been into town to order her Shakespeare book and buy an academic diary so all looks good Grin

She also realises that she is now only doing 4 subjects at school and that she has chosen to do them. Her English teacher also told her that after today nobody cares (if that's the right word) what she got in her GCSE's.
Had to talk to the English teacher as heard mumbles in the car park that they have changed the set reading list and one of the books we had bought has now been deleted! Managed to take it back to Waterstones though....

Horsemad · 22/08/2013 14:59

DS1 did very well - 7A* 4A and a B. I'm relieved it's all over but not looking forward to 2yrs time when I'll have one doing A levels and one doing GCSEs. Eeeek!!

How do i request a remark? My DD was 1 mark off an A* for maths. Frustration isn't the word!

Sparklegeek · 22/08/2013 15:21

Niceguy I think your first step would be to contact the school. I think they would put the application in for you?

RaspberryLemonPavlova · 22/08/2013 15:33

DS1 got A* for Maths and A for English Lit. Only Y10 so just 2. Still stressful this morning though, can't imagine what it will be like next year.

Highly pleased for teacher DN as well, he just e-mailed to say his school has improved its A to C inc Eng and Maths by 18% and he is so chuffed for his students.

antimatter · 22/08/2013 15:36

niceguy2 - we got all details re"remarking in the same envelope as results, maybe your child has that too?

BlueStringPudding · 22/08/2013 15:44

Very happy here, DD2 got 7A*, 2A and a B. The B was in English Language which was her weakest subject, but she was still a little disappointed not to get an A in it, particularly as she got an A in English Literature.

littlemisswise · 22/08/2013 15:45

DS2 was close to A*s, within 2 or 3 marks, on 6 of his As. When we picked up his results the teachers had already looked through the results and told us that they have requested remarks for Maths and English Lit.

We've looked at his scores for all his modules and coursework and it seems they have marked down quite a bit of the coursework. His business coursework, for example, was 1 mark off an A according to his teacher, it has been moderated down to just an A. I am wondering if they have done this to the coursework so they can keep them in the A grade boundary so the % of A students fall, which is what the government want.

MrsBartlet · 22/08/2013 15:56

Sorry to those whose dc have not got what they wanted - hope things work themselves out. Well done to those who did get what they wanted. Dd did really well - 10 A*s and 2 As. Very proud of her as she worked really hard.

HepsibarCrinkletoes · 22/08/2013 15:58

duchesse thank you, it's been a hard old 18 months for them and they have all done so brilliantly despite the devastation. I just wish he would stop trying to compare himself with his older two sisters. I can't tell him enough how proud I am of him and how bursting his Dad would be if he was here. I'm hopeful now that with his chosen A level subjects he can knuckle down with the subjects he is passionate about and this time next year these results will be in the dim and distant past.

jamdonut · 22/08/2013 16:06

rightsaidthread The BTEC notification of performance tells you:

"This learner has qualified for the above award with grade Distinction* in June 2013"

The pink edexcel student report form for the BTEC shows a handwritten D* in Overall Result" It is OK. It means distinction star . Smile

summer111 · 22/08/2013 16:13

So proud of dd's results - she missed three quaters of school this year due to illness, coupled with the fact that we are coping with dh's diagnosis and treatment for cancer...all in all a lousy time for dd. She reduced her subjects to 8 core (her school have been brilliant) and achieved 1 A 3 A's and 4 B's. She achieved the elusive A in English language too.

So proud Grin

mummaemma · 22/08/2013 16:20

nice guy 2 and sonnet, why would you request a remark A and B is brilliant and enough to study that subject at A level. A levels are the important exams not the gcse's

Bogeyface · 22/08/2013 16:25

I dont get why you would get an A remarked. I am getting DD's history paper remarked because her previous results and predictions were B and she got a D! Something has gone wrong somewhere, we are also querying her coursework marks. But a very good A is surely achievement enough surely? Even if it is only 2 marks out, that doesnt mean that it has been wrongly marked.

mummaemma · 22/08/2013 16:30

lilibet- my daughter has just done her 1st year in Btec national diploma in business. She absolutely loves it. Got destinction * in her 1st 6 units this this. Shes worked really hard and much prefers BTEC's as theres no exams.
The diploma is equivalent to 2 A levels. She is also doing an A level in Art along side it. With excellent grades in both of these she is on her way to study marketing management at uni next year

circular · 22/08/2013 16:30

Congratulations to all those who got what they wanted needed, and hope everyone gets enrolment etc sorted.

DD did really well. 2A, 4A and 3B. Plus a double Distinction compulsory Btec. Well above what she needed, and one A more than predicted (Music).
Now enrolled at first choice of school for 6th form, chosen subjects - which was her main worry.

The Physics and French papers she thought she had screwed up were fine, and she ended up with A* and A respectively for those subjects.

Debs75 · 22/08/2013 16:31

Just got my MAths and Got an A so really really chuffed with that.Grin

I hope everyone elses DC's did well and got what they wanted

niceguy2 · 22/08/2013 16:33

@mummaemma

I agree with you. DD sat a linear maths exam earlier in the year and already came out of it with an A grade. So she had a choice. Take the A and relax. Or aim for the A*. Whatever happened, she would always get the A from the single paper exam.

She chose to go for the A*. So for her to put that effort in and be 1 mark off is incredibly frustrating. More for her than me.

My thought process is basically that there's no real downside. Worst case is they come back and say "Yep...she was one mark off - tough" but if they can find an extra mark somewhere then she gets the grade she put so much effort into getting.

roisin · 22/08/2013 16:40

ds1's school hasn't reported Maths marks, just grades. AQA. I've no idea why. Does anyone know?

Sparklegeek · 22/08/2013 16:41

In answer to the question upthread, I am probably going to go for a re-mark of an A grade result so as to maximise the chances of DS getting what he deserves. He obviously has the potential as he scored 90% plus in 3 out of 4 of the subject's component papers and mid 80s for the "low" one. And he has ended up one mark off the A*. If his grade ends up staying the same then so be it - at least we can say we tried.

And we are still going out for a meal tonight to celebrate his A.
