I thought I would start this tradition once again while we all wait? DS only sat Trinity...

Of course, boys are a notoriously poor source of information for this kind of thing :o

burntoutdad · 21/01/2013 16:47

Ds seemed to think that the best 3 - 4 boys in each sport were called for their names and given an S which he thought stood for 'scholarship'(he actually said 'dad I think I might have got a discount for football!')
soup - they did say that there would be recalls (mainly cricket and rugby they said), but DS said one of the swimmers (came first ) got an S.
Some had S in more than 1 sport???

kimalima · 21/01/2013 17:08

So as a newcomer I am confused about the process. Do only some boys get called for scholarship? My DS has a friend who is an excellent rugby player. Interviewed already but not called for scholarship. This system confuses me.

NotADragonOfSoup · 21/01/2013 17:31

I think pretty much anyone who applies for a sports scholarship with reasonable supporting "evidence" gets called for trials. Provided they've passed the exam. I'm not really sure though

Boys can get a scholarship based on their performance in more than one sport. I imagine they may decide such a boy is worth 5% for his swimming, 15% for rugby and 25% for combat-ballet Wink

morange · 21/01/2013 17:51

hi all. the waiting and anticipation is very stressful I know! re the sports scholarship my DS went through the process at W last year at 11+ - the parents were told in the intro before the assessment session that they had had more sports scholarship applications than ever that year (2012) ie over 350 and we should be very proud of our DSs for making it that far- for 11+ they said 120 of those who applied for sports were assessed (40 per day) and they said they expected to make approx 15 sports scholarship offers for 11+ - now I don't know how accurate that is in what was actually offered but they were clearly trying to manage expectations. kimalina - it is hard for the rugby boys at age 9/10 to show how good they are on paper wheras some of the other sports it's easier to measure success - the footballers can be academy level, cricketers county level, competitive swimmers, runners have individual times etc etc and alot of the applicants will be club rugby players as well as offering other sports. I have heard that how you do in the physical tests at the assessment is a major factor as measuring "potential" is very important to W - their assessment is certainly more scientific than any I have ever heard of at any other school. fingers crossed for everyone that they get the news they hope for. Good luck Smile

burntoutdad · 21/01/2013 17:55

Kimalima - as soup said if you have applied for a sports scholarship and pass the exam you will be called for trails. Im not sure if you have to do well in the exam to be invited or if just everyone that has applied and passed at any level is invited. However I have heard of someone who passed but did not get asked to sports assessment (maybe evidence not adequate?)
The interview can take place before or after the trails, I think just depending on timing. We have not had an interview date as yet but have been told that we will, DS friend had sports trail and interview date given in separate letters sent on same day.
About 20 boys I think today 10+ and same tomorrow then the 11+ boys wed - fri

kimalima · 21/01/2013 18:11

Thanks all. Thank god I didn't apply for sports scholarship. My son is good but certainly not a academy, county, etc.

Good luck all indeed!

I'll tell DS friend's mother not to panic yet.

burntoutdad · 21/01/2013 20:39

Ignore my feedback on sports assessment test Blush.
I think DS and friend got a bit carried away. I now believe that the 'S' is an indication of the sport that they are applying for the scholarship for. Obviously the coaches are looking at each boy doing his preferred sport, but i think that they are called over if they do well in another sport and asked if they have played before or at a club etc.
'Y' we think now could mean a yes, so 'S' and 'Y' good; no 'S' and 'Y' good; 'S' and no 'Y' not good - Confused
Not sure if anything I'm saying means anything at all or is correct in anyway, seems back in 'analysing every detail' mode!

havinganightmare · 21/01/2013 21:20

Can't enlighten you on the S or the Y as I didn't get that much info last year but I can say that I think there are currently approx 25 sports scholars in years 6/7 at Whitgift now - majority year 7 (some of those having received the scholarship when they joined in year 6). Went to the mentoring evening and am now trying tot up as I didn't at the time. After the initial assessments there were call back for cricket (to test with a hardball - only tennis ball used on assessment day) and hockey, possibly tennis as well. Don't think call back for rugby or football but no 100% on that. Those are easier to judge on the day except we didn't have a blanket of snow last year! I think the beep test was all important and agree they use this to look at potential. Footballers were academy level and cricketers county and district. Rugby players high level club. Oh good luck everyone. Couldn't do this again for all the tea in china. Fingers crossed all round! Grin

PopcornPizza · 21/01/2013 22:54

Re would they tell you if my son is being considered for an academic scholarship
Could the length of interview be a clue? At T they say academic scholarship interviews usually last an hour (my DS was in for 20mins)

NotADragonOfSoup · 22/01/2013 07:19

Trinity did call back for football last year.

Mum4School · 22/01/2013 08:33

Has anyone applied for 12+ at W or T, as we did? It's been silence in the snow for us here...

It looks like everyone is plenty busy with the 10+ and 11+ process, so 12+ may be dealt with later.

Good luck to everyone!

suz742 · 22/01/2013 11:52

Mum4School - I'm still waiting to hear about Whitgift 10+ so rang admissions this a.m. They said letters are still going out and rejection letters haven't gone out as yet...the misery continues!

FatalFlowerGarden · 22/01/2013 12:32

Don't know whether to be reassured by that or not suz! Still waiting here for news from the 10+ at W. I think the worst thing now is that I'm assuming ds hasn't passed and that has made me feel a bit cross (not directly with him though, I hasten to add!) I just feel a bit disheartened by the whole process. Am not sure I can face it again next year

Mum4School · 22/01/2013 12:40

Thanks suz742. This thread is brilliant for hanging on while we go through the same process!

xNovx · 22/01/2013 12:55

My DS sat 10+ Whitgift and Trinity, has his interview with Whitgift on Wednesday IA (fingers crossed) still not heard from Trinity though, I think their still calling and sending letters till the end of this week. Not liking the wait hope he gets called for an interview at trinity too.

noseynoonoo · 22/01/2013 13:05

Some rejection letters have gone out for 10+ already

Inneedofwine · 22/01/2013 13:23

As far as I can make out the Trinity10+ rejection letters should have all been sent out by now - the last posting date was meant to have been Friday. My DS has been called for sport and music assessment but we still haven't been contacted by admissions with an interview date. DH phoned admissions this morning (I told him not to) and they said they're still calling people and that we'll get a call at some point.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that if you haven't heard from Trinity (for the 10+) by now it it probably more likely to be good news than bad. At least I hope so. Good luck to everyone still waiting anyhow!

wjchoihk · 22/01/2013 14:48

Hi. Anyone for 13+ Whitgift? My son was called for a Art scholarship test this week, but not yet for a normal interview. I emailed the office and this was the response. "The academic process is different and we are still slotting boys in for interview." I did ask if I can assume he kind of "passed" academic papers for a separate interview, but I dont know what this response means. Whether it is only matter of time or he can be called for a Art test, but not selected for a normal interview...

Their admissions policy under Music/Art/etc scholarships states "Boys who
achieve a suitable standard in the Entrance Examination are then asked to the School for a subject specific audition/test." though.

Anyone in a similar situation or knowledge on this? Thanks.

burntoutdad · 22/01/2013 16:48

wjchoihk - we were called for sports test but no interview as yet. We were told that if called for assessment then DS had passed exam and so will be called for interview at some point. i.e. you wouldn't be called for test unless you passed the first hurdle 'the exam'

therugratref · 22/01/2013 18:09

Interview at W tomorrow- I am far more nervous than DC is.
According to him I am his hero because wait for it..... I am a good cook Grin

wjchoihk · 22/01/2013 18:19

burntoutdad - Thanks for your relieving comment. Even though I believe they should stick to their own admission policy, this whole process makes me feel nervous more than anything else.

burntoutdad · 22/01/2013 19:12

wjchoihk - if you do still feel a little apprehensive it is best to call rather than email. I have found the admissions officer at W to be really helpful and forthcoming throughout the process, however I can understand if they are a bit busy at the moment!
Bear in mind that they know who you are when you call, as your no comes up and shows them your DS name -it threw me when they knew who i was calling about when I hadn't even given a name Smile. So try not to give them any grief over the process Wink

Kylep · 22/01/2013 19:16

Interview at w Thursday and I've been told to ask them lots of questions but what if they cover everything PLEASE help peeps I'm so stressed out cant even think

burntoutdad · 22/01/2013 19:41

Does anyone know the type of maths questions they would ask in interview if borderline. I read here that for English it might be a short comp discussion but wondered about the level of maths.
