How often should I being washing a blazer?!

So, we're nearly at the end of week 2 of year 7, and I was thinking about when to wash DD's blazer! I gave it a once over and it seems ok - no bad smells in the armpit area (!), and so far small marks have come off fairly easily with baby wipes. Is washing once a month enough or should it be more frequent than that? Any advice would be gratefully received! Grin

I, er, wasn't planning on washing it at all. Just a wipe over when needed

Sparklingbrook · 14/09/2012 12:28

I wahs DS1's every Friday. I don't like it when it starts to smell of school. Grin

WinklyFriedChicken · 14/09/2012 12:28

Our wool ones got dry cleaned once a year Blush

amck5700 · 14/09/2012 12:29

Hmm, I didn't think i'd have to wash it either :(

CuriousMama · 14/09/2012 12:30

Just do as you're doing imo. That's what I do with ds1's and will do with ds2's. Dd2 doesn't get BO yet though. And ds1 is very clean and uses anti-perspirant so his never smells. I do wash it monthly-ish though.

Sparklingbrook · 14/09/2012 12:30

DS1's isn't wool it's more the man made fibre end of the scale.

DameEnidsOrange · 14/09/2012 12:30

Once a week - always has grass stains from football / food spills etc and teen boy smell

amck5700 · 14/09/2012 12:31

Having said that - he hasn't hit puberty yet and showers every morning so will it actually get smelly? It's also bright blue so doesn't seem to show marks the same as black would.

Sparklingbrook · 14/09/2012 12:33

DS1 uses anti perspirant but it's the school smell I hate. Grin

MrsRobertDuvallHasRosacea · 14/09/2012 12:38

I wash every half term unless ds has been playing football in it.
It dries in about an hour which is great.

amck5700 · 14/09/2012 12:42

I don't think the school has a smell - it's a new building so maybe that makes a difference?

Sparklingbrook · 14/09/2012 12:44

Possibly amck, DS spends time on the school coach too, I bet that has it's own aroma. Grin

NimpyWindowMash · 14/09/2012 12:45

Dry clean once a year

SwedishEdith · 14/09/2012 12:45

Once a month? Once a year if I remember Blush

amck5700 · 14/09/2012 12:47

lol sparkling, I can imagine! Mine doesn't play football and doesn't like to move too much if he can help it so no risk of him breaking out in a sweat!

He will however not remove the blazer all day so maybe I should check it out for food stains :)

scentednappyhag · 14/09/2012 12:49

Mine was only ever washed after I melted a mint aero in the inside pocket and it dribbled out all over the place. Lovely Grin

Sparklingbrook · 14/09/2012 12:53

Don't forget to check the pockets for locker keys, bus passes and random stationery before entrusting it to the washing machine.

amck5700 · 14/09/2012 12:53

scented, I bet that smelled lovely tho :)

ibizagirl · 15/09/2012 08:35

Dd's actually in the wash now!! She has a problem with bo so her blazer and jumpers go on a gentle wash using Halo liquid. I have always washed a blazer every week and it doesn't seem to ruin it but it is only a very short 30 degrees wash.

brentwoodgal · 15/09/2012 08:41

Thanks all. DD came home with a pen mark on her shirt yesterday...Vanish hasn't worked...anyone know of another good stain remover that might work?! (PS I'm not obsessed with washing, really) Blush

I wash ds1's every week, sometimes twice a week if it stinks. Express wash 30m mins. He is a very sweaty tall fellow. I can't believe people who only wash their kids' every term....the blazers get sooo much use. Ours are polyester easy care blazers though. Perhaps a smart wool one holds out longer...still it must get whiffy.

amck5700 · 15/09/2012 11:19

brentwood - I use one of the stain devils for ink - it works pretty well.

IloveJudgeJudy · 15/09/2012 12:12

I like to wash DC's once a week. I and they are a bit obsessed with them not smelling as they complain that quite a few children at school do smell. They're usually not allowed to take them off in the lessons so are wearing them for a lot of hours a week. Our school blazers wash really well. I make sure that I'm around when the washing cycle finishes so that I can hang them up to dry immediately.

As for pen marks, I've got a very cheap handwash that I accidentally found out takes out nearly all marks. I use it on nearly all stains now. Pen is particularly difficult to remove, though.

BanoffeeSplitz · 15/09/2012 15:34

Depends if a jumper is being worn underneath or not - with a jumper, that absorbs some of the sweatiness (you do need to wash the jumper regularly though) & every month or so seems fine. If there's just a shirt or a tank top underneath it'll need washing pretty often - polyester so easy enough to stick in the wash.

Also - if they are tight round the armpits, they'll probably need washing more.

Cheap hairspray is good specifically for dissolving biro stains - if you never use hairspray then a cheap travel size will last for years.

bigTillyMint · 15/09/2012 15:37

Well I am a slattern. I have only washed DD's once a half-term for the last 2 years! She has never complained of it smelling and I have never noticed a smell.....
