Are you ready? What's everyone got planned for Thursday? I'm going to my school to check on results, then wait for DD to call me from her school, with her news.

It's going to be an emotional day! Possibly not personally with DD, not expecting any top results, but she does already has Maths and English in the bag. She had what she needs to move forward and that's all that matters.

I have another 120 kids at my school and one or two who I care very much about. Can't wait to be there for them.

mermaid I am so pleased for him, to achieve that is marvellous. That is amazing.

Dd has had a rough old time of it as well lately and has had counselling to help deal with various things, especially anxiety, so for her to get through with good results is a great achievement, I just have to help her focus on all the good she does in life, and not the ONE small failure. Unfortunately she inherited that trait from me.

LineRunner · 23/08/2012 12:12

YES!

DD got a C in maths. Grin You don't know what this means. I am having a Buck's Fizz.

All the grief ... the private lessons ... the meetings ... the compaints ...

GetOrfMoiUsain · 23/08/2012 12:15

I can't believe I posted her name upthread, I was wondering how the hell you all knew her name Grin

GetOrfMoiUsain · 23/08/2012 12:18

Line well done.

I don't blame you for being overjoyed!

I did try to cheer dd up - she got C in triple science. I said that meant she MUST have understood some of the physics shit, that Sheldon Cooper would be proud!

almapudden · 23/08/2012 12:21

Haha GetOrf, we're all actually psychic! Glad she's cheered up a bit - its one of those things that can seem like the end of the world but it's really, really not. Well to to everyone's DC - the stress is over for another year ( or not...January modules anyone?) Wine

bruffin · 23/08/2012 12:22

Ds has got 4As
3Bs
2Cs
D for German, not unexpected
Distinction for engineering
Merit ict

He is dyslexic and git hit by grade boundaries for English language where he got a c,but a b for English lit.
Was really pleased because he did a resits in English lit and went from a C to A* in that module and a b overall.

He is happy ad he can take all the subjects he wants at Level including Further Maths

mermaidbutmytailfelloff · 23/08/2012 12:23

Thanks Getorf. And well done your DD, she has done brilliantly, its just so hard to get them to see it.

Problem with my DS is his own expectations are so high, so he always fails as far as he is concerned.

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 23/08/2012 12:24

I'm sure MN will remove her name if you want, GOML.

I really, really struggled with Maths but strangely am a fairly competent programmer. Managed to scrape a C eventually (which for years I thought was a D as I totalled up the scores incorrectly and had never bothered collecting the certificate!). It hasn't held me back, anyway. Glad to hear she's cheered up :)

Is everyone having lovely dinners tonight to celebrate/perk up their DCs?

GetOrfMoiUsain · 23/08/2012 12:30

Bless him mermaid - it is horrible to see the self-doubt and upset when they think they have done something 'wrong'

Bruffin that is ace.

It all does seem the end of the world to then doesn't it - I remember opening my results in the 90s, I was gutted about my c in art (amazed I got a C in retrospect, I pissed about for 2 years)

SuperB0F · 23/08/2012 12:34

Being a teenager is bloody hard really- it's amazing they manage to cope with it all. And they are certainly their own worst critics. If I could give them anything, it would be the way we see how fantastic they are.

GetOrfMoiUsain · 23/08/2012 12:34

Thanks jenai - I won't bother, I have said what dd is called on various threads, I just am a bit nonplussed as oi usually type dd!

I have said she canchoose where we go for dinner (she has opted for nandos. I am getting her a chocolate cake as well.

LineRunner · 23/08/2012 12:35

Thanks, GetOrf, and I know it's hard for a lot of DDs and DSs (and parents) to see the wood for the trees today.

Did the dread fear about the English grades come true, by the way, for anyone?

Mutteroo · 23/08/2012 12:39

History was predicted B and ended up being a C. Apparently one module was a G grade? DS thinks he must have got everything wrong on it including his name!!
He gained 100% in his science ISA & both Physics exams. A* grades in sciences & Maths. Very handy as he's doing Physics, Maths, Further Maths & Computer Sciences as sixth form.
All other grades were B. Art & DT were surprise but happy results. All in all it's a great day.

That's so true BOF - it is bloody hard being a teen nowadays. So much pressure from everywhere.

I am so proud of dd, I know it sounds wet but she is 10 times the person I am, really engaging, kind and has a real social grace. She will do well in life as she is a good person, always has been.

All those kids today at the school with their 16 year old faces, really touching. It must be a brilliant thing (sometimes) being a teacher.

glaurung · 23/08/2012 12:45

Phew! Dd did better than expected & is very happy and dh and I are over the moon. Both Englishes 2 grades lower than everything else, but thankfully passed. On Literature, the paper that bought her mark right down was the one she had special consideration for (septic arm if anyone remembers), so it does look as if that did affect her. The paper the next day was also lower than she'd hoped too, but that was only PE so no-one cares (as I recall she misread a question on it and threw away lots of marks, so not really unexpected).

Can't wait to get her home and celebrate properly.

Dumbledoresgirl · 23/08/2012 12:46

Can I ask if anyone's child took Additional Maths? My son did, and failed it Shock although Maths is one of his strongest subjects and he is due to do Further Maths for A level. For context, he took the ordinary Maths exam a year early and got an A which itself was a disappointment as we were expecting A. All I know so far is one of his friends, who is brilliant at Maths (represented school at national level in the Maths Challenge and got a merit for his performance there) got a B, but was expecting an A (no A possible apparently in this Additional Maths course).

So clearly my son was not the only one to underachieve, but he has done so so spectacularly, it is really hard to take in. I am wondering if the poor results are confined to a) my son and his friend, b) the school or c) it is a national trend.

Is anyone else here willing to share their child's additional Maths grade and say whether it met expectation or not? Thanks.

And well done to all those who are pleased with their grades, whatever they may be. Ds's are perfectly decent by national standards but a bit of a personal disappointment to ds.

DS1 in y11 got straight A*s which is obviously great.

DS2 in y10 got great results for him - A* in science, A in maths then for the two he was predicted less than C - A in history and B in AQA English. He is one mark off an A in english though so presumably suffered from the grade boundaries stuff Sad. Will be getting it remarked and keeping everything crossed.

Feel so sad he is disappointed with his results compared to DS1's. I think they are a great achievement as he has spent some big chunks of time in hospital and missed a lot of school plus has done these four a year early. I hope they might give him a bit more confidence and reduce his hatred of school. We've sent him to a different school to avoid him being compared to his brother but it's hard to avoid him doing it himself when they are only a year apart.

LineRunner · 23/08/2012 12:54

Dumbledore, re: Additional Maths. That does sound pretty odd. No personal experience (DD lucky to pass maths at all - see above) but will keep an eye out for comments.

Dumbledoresgirl · 23/08/2012 12:58

Thanks LineRunner. Ds is a lazy sod who did absolutely zero revision so the results he got generally speaking are what he deserves even though they are not what he could have achieved. But to completely fail one of his best subjects and one that, I would imagine, you either know your stuff or you don't (and according to his teacher, he knew his stuff) seems really odd to me.

How would we go about getting the paper remarked btw? Is it something parents can demand, or does it have to come from the school?

hattifattner · 23/08/2012 13:04

DD got 3As for the three she has done early. SHe was one mark off A* with one of them. Very proud.

I tutored a lass on D prediction in English language, hoping to push her to a C. SHe got a B!!!!!! So very chuffed about that!

Clareyst · 23/08/2012 13:22

Hi Dumbledoresgirl - my DS did Additional Maths (FSMQ) - predicted an A and got an A. Not sure what the rest of the results at our school were like, but will let you know if I hear anything.

Remarks - our school gave a form this morning for parents to request remarks (and details of the costs involved!). So as parents we're able to request remarks, but it's all managed through school.

Lifeisontheup · 23/08/2012 13:27

My DS got 4 B's, 3 C's and 2 D's. Very proud of him as he has got ASD and is at a SN school. D grades were in History and Art which he is doing for A level but spoke to his teachers today and they are more than happy for him to continue as it's just one paper on each subject that really pulled him down.
