Anyone else suffering through this at mo?!

This is the first time I have used MumsNet forum and it is truly marvellous, thanks for the reassurances. I have missed the wisdom of the school gates since the girls went to High School. Probably couldn't talk to friends about this anyway, i would feel too disloyal to DD. Will try and keep her on an even keel for Module 2'S next week, and then encourage her to to just relax... till results dayWine

TheFallenMadonna · 17/05/2012 19:37

She can't calculate a grade from the student room 'mark schemes'. She has no idea what the grade boundaries will be, and neither do I. All any of us can do is keep working for the next modules and then wait!

One thing I would really recommend, if her teachers have not already done it, is to go through examiner's reports with past papers and mark schemes. They are invaluable for getting an insight in how to maximize your marks.

FrankWippery · 17/05/2012 19:38

Another in agreement with TheFallenMadonna here kthetw. I have one DD doing AS levels this year, but had the same last year with DD1. She was straight As at GCSE and found the transition really hard. She's doing English, Geography, Economics (and General Studies for whatever that's worth..) and dropped Psychology after ASs last year.

Her results last August were not as good as she had hoped for, but she has pulled her grades up and is set for ABB, possibly even AAB, but that will be down to the wire...

Do come and rant, moan, boo on here - this lot are marvellous and we'll all be here in August biting our nails and jollying each other along. With Wine natch Grin

kthetw · 17/05/2012 19:47

Thank you schoolchauffer, frankwippery and thefallenmadonna, and goodnight, better get some work done here and brace myself for the welcome later at home. Hopefully husband will have poured oil on troubled waters. Back in August.

I have just been sorting out one of those paper piles that keep forming in our kitchen cupboards. DS was laughing at a report from last November where his school exams showed A grades at 3 of his subjects and an E for chemistry! He wanted to drop Chemistry before the AS exams, was finding it so hard, especially as he had almost full UMS marks in his GSCE so placed in the top set for A level- in a very high performing school. The rest of his class were all coping and he was very depressed.

His teacher was great and gave him lots of extra revision guidance and work plans, and DS had worked like a trojan. Now his teacher truly believes he can get an A at his AS if he really tries and put in enough revision.

He still plans to drop it for next year though!

MABS · 18/05/2012 06:55

revision session at school for dd todya, then business studies monday. next week is heavy, only tues without exams.

DD is in D1 Maths right now- fingers crossed! Its her best subject so she will be gutted if the paper is a weird one. Picking her up at 11.00 for a long weekend at home ( she is at boarding school) revising for Chem, Maths and French next week.
Hope everyone has a stress free weekend and good luck for everyone with exams early next week. Enjoy a Wine this evening!

mindgone · 18/05/2012 09:21

Kthetw, it's so hard, but hang in there! DS had no jan modules, but mocks in feb, worked bloody hard, and got 2Cs and 2Ds! Was really upset. I searched online, and found a place fairly locally that does private tuition for revision help and exam techniques in small groups and individually. Booked hima few sessions for his different subjects, and he feels they were really helpful. Working harder than I could imagine ( I was lazy at school! I don't let on to the dSs though!), and is really scared of results, and the hard work being for nothing. He wants to do pharmacy, and needs either AAB or ABB. when we went to an open day, they said that the teachers predictions are more important than AS grades. I try to reassure him that the very worst that can happen, is that he needs to resist in Jan. I feel now though, that the August results will give us a realistic idea of what he is capable of, and we'll have to reassess things then. Will be so nervous in August! Lots of Wine needed! Best of luck, hope this helps :)

mindgone · 18/05/2012 09:27

Yes, good luck all for next week, and survival of the weekend! Agree, lots of Wine should see us through! Off to see Dara O'Briain tonight, so a good laugh should really help us all! Grin

JustGettingByMum · 18/05/2012 14:48

DS sent me a text to say he felt D1 and S1 (maths exams) went pretty well, so that's 5 down this week and he's now half way.

Hope everyone else's DC is feeling ok, and has a good weekend.

Mindgone I am Envy, hope you have a fab time this evening

MABS · 18/05/2012 15:30

agree, enjoy Dara :)

OP posts:
FrankWippery · 18/05/2012 15:35

Yes - have fun with Dara! I am v. jealous.

Well we're half way through pretty much. DD2 has a party tonight and has decided to take a double shift at work on Sunday Confused as she is on a mission to save as much money as possible for the summer hols. So we won't see her this weekend (also at boarding school), but she's finishing on Thursday and coming up then as she has two and a bit weeks off.

schoolchauffeur · 18/05/2012 17:53

Survived D1 maths- went well so big relief. Back from school and I'm into the wine ( not even six o'clock Blush) and she has hit the cake!! Have a good weekend all!

mumblechum1 · 20/05/2012 22:00

DS gearing up now for tomorrow when he has Politics from 1 till 2.20, then 10 minute break, then Biology from 2.30 till 4.15.

He's been studying for a good few hours yesterday and today, so fingers crossed.

Will be so glad when Wednesday afternoon rolls round and it's all over until next June!

FrankWippery · 20/05/2012 22:02

Evening all, hope you've all had a lovely weekend. DD2 has English and History on Tuesday, so she's been revising those pretty much all weekend (bar the football which has boosted her even more!). Geography and something else on Wednesday/Thursday - again she's not telling me.

Good luck to everyone's DCs for the last lot this week.

MABS · 21/05/2012 07:12

Business studies today. good luck all !

OP posts:
JustGettingByMum · 21/05/2012 07:43

Good luck to everyone this week

DS has a quiet day today, in school all day for revision, then exams each day

Anybody still have exams next week? DS has his final exam Friday next week, just before the half term break.

happyinherts · 21/05/2012 07:46

Business Studies today - and Psychology and PE next week - sigh of relief after that

schoolchauffeur · 21/05/2012 08:09

Good luck everyone. No exams here until Weds ( Chem), Thurs ( Maths) and Friday (French) and then a long weekend off to celebrate!
Lots of work done yesterday wth DH impromptu maths coach so fingers crossed all is on track!

FrankWippery · 21/05/2012 08:16

DD has her last exam on Thursday and is then off until after half term. She may be slightly excited by that! DD3 is even more excited as DD2 has promised to go in to her nursery school with her a couple of mornings next week. And I am excited as I may be able to do something without having a 3 year old attached to my right leg Grin

MABS · 21/05/2012 08:37

dd doesn't finish til 31 May, Pe that day. Her only day off this week is tomorrow.

OP posts:
MABS · 21/05/2012 11:09

just had text to say Business Studies pretty good :)

OP posts:
AliceInSandwichLand · 21/05/2012 11:28

DD has History tomorrow, then nothing for over 3 weeks until she does French A2 (she's doing it early). Therefore several weeks of very part time study and intensive driving practice - possibly the only thing more stressful than revision support?!

Jins · 21/05/2012 11:36

We're all done on Friday 25th

Biology this afternoon. Currently watching TV Shock

MABS · 21/05/2012 11:51

agree Alice! dd learning to drive too!
