Anyone else suffering through this at mo?!

OP posts:
froot · 16/08/2012 08:03

Am new to this thread but joining in (hope u don't mind) just got ds as results. Wants to do chemistry and wanted to apply to Oxford but no chance now tho results ok just not good enough for Oxford. Or prob Bristol. Or poss lots others as they all seem to want AAA or AAB . He has just got ABBB (and also A for gen stud and C crit thinking but we don't count those.)

Don't know if predicted grades will be same as these results - anyone know how it works???

postolympicblues · 16/08/2012 08:07

Apparently the grade boundaries were published yesterday. So there was lots of analysis and speculation going on over Xbox and facebook yesterday

FrankWippery · 16/08/2012 08:20

Froot - my DD1 got BBCC this time last year in her main subjects. She's just received an email from Bristol saying she's got a place confirmed which must mean that she has achieved the AAB that she was required to have. So, yes, I reckon your DS can do it if he works hard.

froot · 16/08/2012 08:26

Congrats to your dd Frank that's great news for her! And I am heartened ! What subject is she doing and what were her predicted grades/offer?

I think my ds would do well in interview and as he was aiming for Oxford his personal statement is done already (apart from adding in his (loads of relevent) work experience his summer) its just the flipping grades that are not quite what he wanted at this stage. Hmmm I TOLD him to revise grrrrrrrr....

FrankWippery · 16/08/2012 08:39

Strategic Management something or other. She needed AAB, predicted was AAB. She must have at least that to be in. She didn't do so well last year because she didn't work hard enough. She knew it and did something about it.

Don't be disheartened, DD1 has worked jolly hard this year despite having an awful one (their father died in March). DD2 has sights set on Oxford, Kings or LSE. This time next year I will be crapping myself about her!

froot · 16/08/2012 08:44

Oooh she wil have fun in Bristol. Wish I could do uni again. How did she get higher predictions than her AS results?? My ds is a lazy arse but think he will work harder after this as had same effect after poorer than expected gcse results, worked hard at Xmas so those modules he got AAAB , then got cocky so didn't work for summer exams. Grrrr grrrrr

CherryLip · 16/08/2012 08:49

Frank...well done to your DD! Now enjoy getting her ready to go to Bristol. Hope your other DC have good news too. Hope you will be celebrating !

FrankWippery · 16/08/2012 09:03

She resat two modules, but sheer hard work is what did it. Her social life went from chaotic to zero and she really knuckled down. Bristol will be awesome I reckon! Her biggest panic now is the 'how am I going to live on £50 a week' one!

froot · 16/08/2012 09:04

Lots of Asda Smartprice noodles!!

AppleCrumbleAndFish · 16/08/2012 09:12

YAY! DD1 got AAAB. She's dropping the one she got B in for A2 anyway. So pleased and relieved for her. She can enjoy the rest of her holidays now.

JustGettingByMum · 16/08/2012 09:25

Morning all
We are on holiday and my lovely friend has just texted us DS AS results, AAABC, and he's planning on dropping the C anyway so we can now relax and enjoy the rest of our hols.

Good luck to everyone waiting, will check in again this eve x

FrankWippery · 16/08/2012 09:43

If only froot - she hates noodles! Baked beans all the way I reckon!

We have her results now - she got AAA. One of her resits came back with a 100% pass, so froot, your son CAN do it.

FrankWippery · 16/08/2012 09:43

Just got DD2's - AAAAB

CherryLip · 16/08/2012 11:29

That's great Frank. AABB at AS here so very happy. Well done to everyone else too!

schoolchauffeur · 16/08/2012 11:29

Hello all- nice to see everyone back after the summer hols. DD got an A and two Cs which she is pleased about as had one nightmare module in Chem which if she retakes in Jan will give her a B. Thrilled with the A and well on track to get her A and 2 Bs next summer which is what she needs. She is also doing another AS but at her school the AS is done over two years to allow more teaching time for the main A level subjects and hers is an art subject so totally on portfolio.
Well done to everyone else's DCs too!
Oh- update- now thinks she might re-do a Maths module in January as well as she has worked out that would give her a fighting chance of AAB. Could be a looooong year............
Enjoy celebrating everyone!

crisisofidentity · 16/08/2012 11:38

Hi
My ds got ABBD and he is disappointed like yours froot he didn't work too hard in my opinion was a bit too cocky. I don't know how they know predict the grades for next year, or if will be able to resit any. Also a C for critical thinking.

crisisofidentity · 16/08/2012 11:41

froot I meant he was like your ds in being disappointed, not in being cocky!

mindgone · 16/08/2012 12:35

Congratulations to all whose DCs did well, and commiserations to those who are disappointed. Am afraid we are in the latter camp! DS got BCCC plus an A for GS! Feels gutted now and wondering what's the point of all the hard work. He really did work hard and was hoping for and expecting As and Bs. He was hoping to apply for Pharmacy which needs AAB to ABB, but was hoping for one of the higher grade ones. Not sure what to do now, DH thinks maybe he should re-sit year 12, but I'm really not sure about that, could be a lot of humiliation for really not that bad grades. Hopefully he can be like Frank's daughter and turn it around. It's hard though when they really can't see what went wrong. The teachers are in school today to discuss things, but he won't go today, still too upset, thinks he can go anytime and they'll be there for him!! Doesn't seem to understand that they have lives!!

Champneys · 16/08/2012 13:05

I think I am going to start a 'parent of gutted teen support thread'DD didn't do as well as she hoped. I dont know what to do to make her feel better Sad
Will start it in chat now. All welcome.

TheReturnoftheSmartArse · 16/08/2012 13:30

Champneys, I'm coming over to join you ... Sad

FrankWippery · 16/08/2012 13:54

Champneys, mindgone and TheReturn - please don't be too harsh on yourselves, or your DC on themselves. This was me last summer with DD1 and she is absolute proof that it can be turned around.

She put her social life on hold and poured her soul into her work. There have been tears and tantrums mine but my goodness it has paid off.

One of her resits (Economics) has come through at 100%, which is just brilliant as we were not expecting that at all. She worked part time up until December and then stopped it until after her exams in June. The only parties she allowed herself to go to were her close circle's various 18th Birthdays. Nothing else.

Champneys · 16/08/2012 14:03

Thanks Frank.

One cannot help feeling for the dc. So much bloody pressure. ~Too much pressure. I have let them do it all at their own pace as it is stressful enough for them. You see the work put in and hope to god it pays off so when they are gutted like this, it is awful for us, because we cannot really do much to help them.
DD abroad, so had to text her the results. I have to say, there is a whole crowd of them who have not done as well as expected. She says alot of her friends got E and U and wont be returning to finish the A2's they are that disappointed. Which would be a shame. Anyway I am off to bump the support thread as I dont want to put the gloom on all the great results on this one.

Champneys · 16/08/2012 14:04

link to the gutted thread

FrankWippery · 16/08/2012 14:30

Well I have spoken with three parents today and know of others whose DC have got E and U in English. THeir coursework was marked A, yet on the results paper it says D; their exams marked as U, let some got a final grade of E and others a U - there is something very very wrong with the English, maybe with others as well.

cinnamonnut · 16/08/2012 15:36

To the examiners who marked my English lit spec A on AQA - I love you.
