havinganightmare · 17/02/2012 12:51

It's a yes and a sports scholarship from W. I now love my dead postman!!!!

frankies69 · 17/02/2012 12:56

Hi guys, I am on but not with good news!!! Unfortunately my DS has not been successful in securing a place at W so my wait carries on until March 1st to see what state school he gets Sad. I have not actually received a letter but I have rung and been told the sad news Sad

We had what we thought was an amazing interview but obviously they saw us differently to how we see ourselves and our DS Shock

kravings devestated for you not getting the bursary..I just wonder if they are not giving as many this year as we too tried for a bursary....

Everyone else who has got places I am absolutely thrilled for you if not suffering a bit of Envy . If you are all going to meet up in the future count me in one the disappointment has worn off!!!

I will keep coming on and see how you are all doing and Thanks to you all for your support in the last few weeks and months xx

Well done havinganightmare! Great news!

Confusingly we had a letter from Tonbridge as well as our chosen school in the post just now, though no offer from the former Grin. Ds1 had a guaranteed place at his senior school but ds2 will have to go through selection in a couple of years (and we'll probably apply to every school just in case!).

kravings · 17/02/2012 12:57

lol havinganightmare great news!

kravings · 17/02/2012 13:00

oh I am so sorry to hear your news frankies - tbh I am a Shock, we are here for you...you and I can wait until 1st March and I am sure we will get the news we want.

frankies69 · 17/02/2012 13:02

Well done to those with offers and especially scholarships, sorry frankie.

Pleased to report that dd got her 2 offers :o (sorry to muscle in on this thread but the other one is very quiet) LM, were all those in your ds1 school who sat the 11+ exam pretty much guaranteed places ? dd may be joining them .... Did he sit the Tonbridge pre-test as thought those results were due out before now ?

miss600 · 17/02/2012 13:06

Hi all

Congratulations to all those who have had the desired results so far! Ultimately, the fact that you are the kind of parents who are on here stressing about secondary schools in the first place means that your kids already have a head-start in life, no matter what the outcome is right now.

I have been an on-looker for a while, enjoying the fun, but not wanting to gate-crash Blush

However, I have a burning question that I want to ask and can't think of a better place to go with it (although it's probably just wishful thinking on my part). Presumably some of candidates who have been offered scholarships/bursaries will turn them down for other offers elsewhere. In these cases, what happens next? Are some kids with full-fee places then offered the unused scholarships/bursaries or does the money just remain in the pool for next year's candidates or other purposes?

FarmerBarleymow · 17/02/2012 13:07

Offers from W and T! Decisions to make!

LIZS · 17/02/2012 13:10

miss600 we were wondering that very thing re declined awards. Lots of 11+ candidates must be offered multiple places and awards. Difficult one to drop into the conversation though , lol !

SoupDragon · 17/02/2012 13:10

Oh, Frankie :(

frankies69 · 17/02/2012 13:12

thanks soupy...

miss600/LIZS - you took the words out of my mouth...I need to know too.

Can anyone answer that?

katiebdee · 17/02/2012 13:21

I'd wondered that about re-offering scholarships when we first went through this but I think they expect some not to be taken up as children who are offered awards are often offered more than one at different schools.

I specifically asked about this and at one school we applied to, the specialist scholarships were re-offered if not taken up (sport, music etc) but at the others they didn't offer anything to anyone else if scholarships weren't taken up.

wjchoihk · 17/02/2012 13:30

Anyone who sat for 12+ W? Would a wait-listed have very low chance of getting in in 12+, as fewer number of places?? May have to wait until offereds accept/decline by 7 March(?).

Ladymuck · 17/02/2012 13:35

frankies69, I'm so sorry, and gutted for you. Sad. I hope that you get good news on the 1st.

Ladymuck · 17/02/2012 13:46

LIZS, all of the prep school Year 6 were guaranteed. Congratulations to your dd!

No ds didn't sit the pretest for Tonbridge, though I love the school. Just we were left in a complicated situation having lost faith in the local 13+ school but the commute to The Hawthorns being too far. We're very happy with the current school, and concluded that we would only be sitting ds1 for other schools in order to try to negotiate a better award for him at his current school (or to get bragging rights along with the rest of our friends with dc going through this). As ds2 can't get into the prep school he will have to go through the entrance exam competitively to Trinity, Whitigft etc and I didn't want to have already made any impression via ds1!

keepingittogether · 17/02/2012 13:46

Sad news today:( not sure how to break the news to DS. Really shocked as we thought we would be OK. "You did exceedingly well to make it to the final stages for consideration, but the competition for places this year was very high and it is with regret that we are unable to make you an offer of a place this year" how do I translate this to a ten year old boy. Deeply saddened. I hope you have all faired much better and hope that you have all won the places you wanted.

kravings · 17/02/2012 13:52

keepingittogether I am so sorry to hear your news.

Caoimhe · 17/02/2012 13:55

So, so sorry frankies69 and keepingittogether - that is just gutting and so hard to explain to your boys. Sometimes it can be really difficult to understand what happened but it may just be that the competition was exceptionally high this year. Sad I'm sure your boys will go on to great things with your love and support.

frankies69 you have some good state options so fingers crossed for 1 March.

Congratulations to havinganightmare, LadyMuck and LIZS re your offers (and scholarship for havinganightmare's ds!!) Smile

As for re-offering scholarships, it does happen and in one case when a scholarship was turned down very late it was converted into a bursary offer for another boy.

keepingittogether · 17/02/2012 14:02

Tears have stopped now. It was an 18 month long effort, but we will try again.

Thanks Kravings and sorry for being so selfish and not congratulating you and the others - really a very BIG well done and I am so pleased for you. Just heard from friend whose DS has a W offer for Year 7, plays Hockey for Surrey and gifted batsman but amazingly has not won a sports scholarship or a bursary which places DW & DH in strained position. Friend called W earlier and questioned the scholarship and was told that this year has seen an unprecedented demand for bursaries and scholarships which has stretched resources and limited awards, how sad for them. Saving grace without assistance we would not have accepted a place if we had won one.

LIZS · 17/02/2012 14:12

So sorry keepingittogether :(

Am getting the feeling that this year has perhaps been more competitive than others all round. Hadn't fully appreciated that until now, such as in LM's school's case that probably left 200+ external candidates competing for around 60 places.

keepingittogether · 17/02/2012 14:26

Thanks LIZS, I believe that it is a sign of the times with these schools receiving unprecedented demand for both places and financial support. Now beginning to rationalise.
