Hello, I've been told there is a really good tutor preparing children to Tiffin 11+ exam, her name is Mrs.W...I would be grateful if anybody who knows how to contact her can share it with me.. Maybe anyone could recommend someone or any school ,which teaches for entry exams. Many thanks

Gosh, having actually wasted ten minutes of my life reading through this thread (it's too wet outside to get up to the allotment and I needed a good laugh), I was considering contributing this year's spoof post asking for the contact details of a tutor who retired years ago. But I've been beaten to itGrin.

(Apologies, Magda555, if you hadn't read through the thread and seen the multiple responses telling other posters that this particular tutor has retired, but seriously, there are lots of them).

ExTiffinBoy · 20/08/2018 10:16

The legendary Mrs W has indeed retired, however, I was actually tutored by my Mum (who has now become a full time tutor) back when the Tiffin School entrance exams was verbal reasoning/non-verbal reasoning and I scored 256/280.

For those of you who don't know, Tiffin School/Tiffin GIrls' School have actually changed their entrance exam criteria and structure. It is now Eleven Plus (11+) Maths and English. To give you an extent of the difficulty of the types of questions, I have seen certain Maths questions on par with foundation level GCSE Maths. To be honest, the KS2 curriculum falls well short of where students need to be in terms of knowledge and exam technique so it definitely pays dividends to find a tutor who knows what they are doing.

Furthermore, I see that the Tiffin School applications have increased greatly in terms of numbers, I joined Year 7 back in 2002 and it was around 1,000 applicants for 150 places. Tiffin School have increased their places to 180 but back even in 2014 there were 1,863 applicants so the ratio has made it statistically harder to pass.

If anyone would like any information about the school, admissions advice or tutor recommendations etc please feel free to PM me or post your questions here and I'll aim to answer asap.

Hello I am curious to know if Mrs Walsh daughter still does tuition for childrens . I am in kingston area and trying to find a good tutor too .Does anybody have any contact number or recommendation for tuition in preparation to grammar school? Your help would be much appreciated.

montenuit · 30/08/2018 13:47

ok i am going to be blunt rude and say if you can't be bothered to read the thread then you really aren't of the mindset to get your dcs through the tiffin prep material.

Thisonesfortheroad · 22/01/2020 00:06

@saya @MaeMobley @toutlemonde would you be willing to share you tutor recommendations with me?

Thisonesfortheroad · 22/04/2020 18:46

@ExTiffinBoy, I’d be interested in understanding what the standard looks like for Tiffin as it is actually our closest school (I know that doesn’t count for anything), but DS is bright, top set for Maths, loves reading. Not as good when it comes to creative writing, but it’d be good to know whether trying for the exam is worth a shot.

I’ve spoken to a few mums in our school who all say tutoring is a must, but no one can recommend any, or those they do recommend are already full!

I think I missed the memo about signing one up on time Confused

ExTiffinBoy · 23/04/2020 05:31

@Thisonesfortheroad

The standard in terms of ability is extremely high. Just to give you some context, the students who I know that passed Tiffin School/Tiffin Girls' School were all consistently scoring 90%+ on CGP and Bond papers. One boy who got offers from Wilsons and QE (Queen Elizabeth School) was actually on the Tiffin waiting list (he wasn't strong in comprehension or Creative Writing, but was really good at Maths) but he now has a place.

Round 1:
Multiple choice Maths
Multiple choice English

Round 2:
Long written Maths
Creative Writing and written comprehension (English)
For the past two years, there was a new style of question called 'shuffled paragraphs'

Tiffin/Tiffin Girls don't release past papers and write their exam papers themselves so they are neither GL or CEM format.

Just as a disclaimer here and for transparency, I now run a tuition centre for 11+ Creative Writing but unfortunately, cannot take on any new students due to the length of my waiting list so I am not trying to advertise. I am more than happy to assist by answering questions and wish everyone's children good luck with their 11+ exams :)

Kind regards
Richard

Avoid Mrs. Jones's tutoring at any cost. Complete waste of time, money, and efforts as parents. If only I had a crystal ball.

suluzee · 26/07/2020 10:10

Has anyone looked at Teachitright if available in their areas www.teachitright.com. The USP of it is that they limit up to 10 kids per classroom. Chris, the founder is truly passionate about what he plan to deliver from a success rate viewpoint and all teachers are really magnificent.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 26/07/2020 22:04

One boy who got offers from Wilsons and QE (Queen Elizabeth School) was actually on the Tiffin waiting list (he wasn't strong in comprehension or Creative Writing, but was really good at Maths) but he now has a place. And yet as far as I can tell Wilson's has outperformed Tiffin in the league tables for nearly a decade?

Kingstonlifer · 27/07/2020 07:13

This is interesting. I know that Tiffin have changed their entrance examination a few years ago to make theirs exams more 'tutor-proof'. I'm not sure for how long the Sutton schools' SET has been English and Maths, and not VR and NVR? A friend has a son at Tiffin and he says some boys are being tutored to keep up

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 27/07/2020 12:52

I think tutoring at the SW London grammars is definitely a thing, even though some people find it hard to believe!

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 27/07/2020 12:53

Sorry not very well phrased sentence there. What I meant is that many of the pupils do indeed continue to be tutored once they're in.

Thisonesfortheroad · 24/10/2020 13:31

@NewModelArmyMayhem18 you are absolutely right: tutoring is definitely a thing and just because someone passed Wilson’s and QE but is on a wait list for Tiffin doesn’t unequivocally prove that Tiffin is harder to get into. Nor does it mean that the school is any better at teaching. In fact, if you what you say about exam performance is true, the child is better off at Wilson’s because they clearly add more value to their intake!

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 25/10/2020 12:54

@Thisonesfortheroad, it makes one query how good the super-selectives really are teaching-wise, if many of their great exam results are the result of tutor-enhanced performance. I recall mentioning this about DS's cohort and one particular MNetter shot me down (even though her DC seemed to be educated in the private sector!). It is very much a thing but not something many parents will admit to.

I think there are many parents who will choose the SW London grammar to which to send their DC, based on which is perceived to be the highest ranking. I think Tiffin's days of being considered the best locally are behind it (Wilson's just keeps on going from strength to strength).

Thisonesfortheroad · 26/10/2020 17:23

@NewModelArmyMayhem18 your view was certainly shared by a local mum I was talking to recently. She told me that Tiffin School wasn’t necessarily something to strive for any more and that there were better offerings for boys in Sutton or Hampton (if you’re willing to pay) and that academically-minded boys in the local comps do equally as well, as the schools try to facilitate their potential.

Thisismylife1 · 26/10/2020 18:39

The word on the street in SW London certainly is that children are heavily tutored to get into these super selective schools and then tutored throughout. It’s madness and the schools don’t care as they get the great results.

Kingstonlifer · 27/10/2020 14:17

My DS is at Tiffin and is having a great time socially and academically. Being amongst lots of clever boys is great for him. So far he hasn't been able to tell which boys are the ones that have been tutored to distraction just to get in Grin. I would be astounded to hear of boys that are tutored throughout, but maybe there are some.

I agree that clever boys would do just as well in a comprehensive and the opportunities they would receive maybe greater, purely from the fact they may stand out more and are at a comprehensive. The environment at Tiffin suits my DS, but granted it may not suit all boys.

Hina777 · 08/10/2025 15:48

Mrs Walsh's style of teaching was great and their explanation of each problem, a clear schedule was given to each child leading up to the examination period. For parents who are/ may be unaware of what was involved, having them tutor my sister's provided my parents with peace of mind. My cousins refused to share their contact information when I was sitting the exams many many many years ago. Both of my sisters go into their chosen grammar schools and my cousins too at the time. Does anyone have Mary Walsh's contact number ? We seem to have misplaced it. I recall there being a waiting list of some sort. It would be much appreciated.
