Let me get this right ...... you have to book a tutor to cram your kid to get them past an entrance test when they are 11, SEVEN years in advance?

amidaiwish · 11/01/2014 11:11

actually it is worse than that MrsBright
you have to book a tutor when they are about 4 or 5 just to get on their list.
then when they are in yr 5 they are called for an assessment. The tutor then decides whether to take them or not! (basically they pick those on their list most likely to get in)
then they charge £35 for 50 minutes for group tutoring (6) - yep that is £35 each child.

it is a complete swizz.

Hi is it possible to get the contact information for your Mrs W..... my daughter is 8 and I want to start tutoring her for the Tiffins exams.

Needmoresleep · 16/05/2014 10:44

DD goes to an indie that shares part of its catchment with Tiffin, and takes a fair number from state Primaries, eg if you don't get Tiffin you might consider this school as a fall-back.

A Year 7 coffee morning turned into quite a rant against the various well-known Tiffin tutors (and their daughters). Though DD tried Tiffin she was not tutored, and it felt as if we were the only ones not to have done so. The tutors may be good, however they select likely candidates, and charge them a lot. Those that then get in give them credit, so encourage others. Probably worth speaking to some neighbours whose children are at private Secondaries, and who were less satisfied customers.

Results at DDs school are better than Tiffin. However it is clear that fees for some involve real sacrifice.

AmazingDisgrace · 16/05/2014 11:39

Jamming, If you had read the thread you'd have seen that Mrs W isn't taking on any more students.

sanindu17 · 15/06/2014 13:05

hi could you sent me her contact details because i am looking for good tutor for my son.

AmazingDisgrace · 17/06/2014 15:17

Hi Sanindu. Read the thread please. Mrs W is retiring.

Pani6161 · 23/06/2014 14:10

Hi Everyone. My son will be starting year 5 in September and I am looking for very good tuition to help him in English and also prepare him for 11+ exam. Our first aim is Tiffin school but at the meanwhile he will sit at St' Paul and some other independent school too.
I would appreciate if you can recommended me an outstanding tutor and share your views with me.

HPparent · 23/06/2014 17:16

There is a website called elevenplusexams which has a host of information - look on the Surrey threads, there is also advice on prep for the various types of test.

mumshelp07 · 30/06/2014 10:20

Can someone pm me Mrs Walsh's telephone number please? Many Thanks.

HPparent · 30/06/2014 10:31

If you read the thread you would see that Mrs Walsh retired a while back. The exams and catchment at TGS have changed since her day so I would recommend the site I referred to above as a source of information.

I am glad my daughter has now finished at the school to be honest!

mung17 · 02/07/2014 10:34

Hi,
I'm Looking for a good tutor for Tiffin Boys and Tiffin Girls in Barnes/ Putney/ Ricmond. Appreciate if someone can share some info with me.
Many thanks.

neenaa1 · 23/09/2014 11:10

Hi,
I am myself looking for a good tutor for Tiffin Boys. Please if you know Mrs Walsh number PM me. Thanks in advance.

Shootingatpigeons · 23/09/2014 12:22

Think I will change my name to Mrs W Grin There is clearly a gap in the market. Sit 6 children around my kitchen table who I have already checked can perform at say the 90 th percentile (to make sure Word of Mouth quotes plenty of successes) and have them do repetitive Reasoning and Attainment tests for £35 an hour? I can do that (actually I can get 8 chairs round my kitchen table .....) I will even mark them and may even unlike most of the kitchen tutoring factories work with the children to try and make it interesting and build their confidence (or not if the tiger parents think it's a bit soft...... ) All I need to do now is tell say five parents who have DCs siting the exams next year that my lists are full and not to tell anyone about me Grin .

I'm not against tutoring, DIY or by a skilled and inspiring teacher , with sound educational objectives that actually do relate to the requirements of the schools, as long as it is interesting and confidence building but all this seeking out of commodified exam factories fuelled by Chinese whispers that it is the only way to succeed and illusions of pseudo exclusiveness is like lemmings running off a cliff....... Honestly they will make your children miserable, and it will add little value.....

:-(

Ladymuck · 23/09/2014 13:54

Thank goodness that the boys school has stuck with the VR/NVR approach, otherwise it would be more tricky. But I think that you're onto a good idea shootingatpigeons. I'd look for a local pottery studio or similar that you could work from.

[I am now seeing a wave of tutors advertising themselves as having trained under Mrs W in case that helps your marketing!]

pinkmoomin · 23/09/2014 14:28

Mrs Walsh has retired.

actually swizz isn't fair as they are clearly very good and there's no secrecy about it.

but it is a good money spinner - i stand by my last point, the schools should be helping prepare kids for state grammar, the prep school kids get plenty of VR/NVR practice.

CanadaUK · 26/11/2014 10:13

I am looking for a tutor for Tiffin Girls.

Apparently you have to make contact with a tutor a few years in advance, so that is what I am trying to do.

Any suggestions on who to contact would be most useful.

toomuchpokemon · 27/11/2014 17:42

Ladymuck: "Thank goodness that the boys school has stuck with the VR/NVR approach..."

Actually, they're dropping VR/NVR from now on so all the Mrs W's of South London may need to adapt their business model or be out of a job! See here for details.

Ladymuck · 27/11/2014 21:25

Dahling, already done. The clique just run mock exam courses now in multiple choice English and Maths. No teaching actually required, and parents will pay £50-£100 per child to sit papers that you can more or less print from the internet. You can program a simple Excel workbook to provide an impressive "personalised report", and then pass on the name of chums who might actually be able to teach to the parents (all for a suitable commission).

toomuchpokemon · 28/11/2014 10:23

A friend of mine phoned a Mrs W clone last year to register her son. While they were chatting, my friend mentioned that she trained as a teacher but gave it up. The W-clone said "Ooh, then you should get into tutoring ... it's a booming business". Smile So if they're encouraging others to get stuck in, they must be doing well!

tutorinneed · 29/12/2014 11:13

Does anyone can send me a message about Mrs W or her daughter number or name of the tution classes that they run for 11+.

Appreciate early response.
