Are you hoping to come up with an answer? If so, is there something missing form the equation?

ssd · 26/01/2011 18:31

trying to help dd, totally clueless (me!!)

it sayd work out the brackets then simplify, what does that mean, how do I start??

OP posts:
rinabean · 26/01/2011 18:31

expand brackets

10s - 35 + 3s - 9s + 63

(negative x negative = positive)

add up

4s + 28

Is this half an equation? Because the fact that both are divisible by 4 makes it seem like you are meant to at some point. Could just be coincidence though.

ramonaquimby · 26/01/2011 18:32

yup

so it's going to be
10s-35

and

3s - 9s + 63

10s+ 3s - 9s -35 +63
4s + 28

PatientGriselda · 26/01/2011 18:32

4s + 28 ??

SoupDragon · 26/01/2011 18:33

OK.

The first bracket becomes 10S - 35 (you multiply the inside bits by 5)

You get:

10S - 35
+3S
-9S - 63

Which, if you add all the Ss and all the numbers gives you 4S -98 I think.

thanks, but what is half an equation (I don't even recognise what this is!)

do you mean answer is s+7?

OP posts:
purlgirl · 26/01/2011 18:33

=10s-35+3s-9s+63
=4s+28
(I think!)

ssd · 26/01/2011 18:34

maryz I copied it exact from the homework sheet

OP posts:
ssd · 26/01/2011 18:34

none of the questions have a "= something" at the end

OP posts:
ramonaquimby · 26/01/2011 18:35
ssd · 26/01/2011 18:36

is it 4s+28 then?

If none of the questions have an equals sign then you must be meant to just simplify them. In that case the answer is just 4s + 28. Is your daughter just starting algebra, maybe?

PatientGriselda · 26/01/2011 18:37

Because some of us are slower than the rest of you, ramona!

Doesn't seem like it's supposed to be an equation, it's just practising the simplification process :)

FreudianSlippery · 26/01/2011 18:42

Also Ramona it may be helpful for the op to have lots of different posts explaining it in different ways.

piprabbit · 26/01/2011 18:45

OP - I think it's great that you want to put in the time and effort to help your DD.

It sounds like you are a little out of your depth here - and your DDs homework is probably going to be getting tougher.

Could you find a course at a local Adult Education centre to help you brush up on the latest Maths teaching methods? That way you can be sure you are being helpful, and not risk confusing your DD by using different explanations.

Aerobreaking · 26/01/2011 18:45

I would imagine it is just a 'multiply out' homework, so the answer would be
5(2s-7) + 3s - 9(s-7)

you need to multiply out the brackets, so you multiply everything in the bracket by whatever is immediately to the left of the bracket.

First take 5(2s-7)
This is equal to
5x2s - (5x7) =
10s - 35

Then the next bit is + 3s

so your answer is now 13s - 35

Now you take the last bit
-9(s-7)
and multiply each bit by -9
so you get
-9s - (-63) =
-9s + 63

add this to 13s - 35

so your final step is 13s - 35 - 9s + 63
= 4s + 28

Hope that helps (sorry if I'm teaching you to suck eggs!)

PutOnThePan · 26/01/2011 18:48

this looks like a BODMAS task as well as collecting like terms.

BODMAS is a way of remembering the order in which operations should be done:

B=brackets
O=pOwers
D=division
M=multiplication
A=addition
S=subtraction

so, 5(2s-7)+3s-9(s-7)

no brackets, powers or division so multiply first giving
10s - 35 + 3s - 9s + 63

addition and subtraction of like terms gives

10s+3s-9s-35+63= 4s + 28

thanks!

now can I get help with this please

factorise the following expressions

42fg-35f(squared)+21f(cubed)
