Can anyone confirm/deny rumours that KGS is v difficult to get into these days for 10+ and 11+? Boy at DS's school failed to get in last year then got a Hampton scholarship but latter is more academic or so I thought?

Astonished to hear that. Last year DS was offered places for 10+ @ KGS and Hampton, but we only went for KGS as it was the first exam and so would be practice for Hampton. DS's view was that KGS exam much easier than Hampton.

scrabble66 · 27/12/2010 22:08

Thanks for that - have had quite mixed reports re entrance Personally we want a co-ed as DS more creative type and is currently at v sporty boys' prep. He's in top third/quarter in year but school has said KGS 10plus 'will be a challenge' for him so now feel a bit concerned! There seems to be a lack of good academic co-ed schools with focus on rounded individuals in area- maybe those more enlightened than me know different - please let me know.

My good friend's DS failed to even get an interview at KGS but got into Hampton. Her DD did get in but ended up going to Tiffin girls. But maybe a lot has to do with how they cope on the day? Don't know!

You are right regarding the lack of quality co ed indi schools.

deaddei · 28/12/2010 13:26

Always thougt Hampton less academic, judging from 2 friends whose sons have gone there, having failed KGS and Tiffin.
Agree with poster- depends on boy and how they do on the day.

RatherBeOnTheMulledWine · 28/12/2010 14:03

It is also a bigger intake at Hampton.

Although they say they don't manipulate the entrance cohort, it does seem a good balance of boys and girls at KGS in each year.

stillfeel18inside · 29/12/2010 17:24

And what about siblings for kgs? do you think they get any preference?

RatherBeOnTheMulledWine · 29/12/2010 21:07

I asked the KGS registrar this last year and she said categorically not, there was no sibling priority, each in on their own merits blah blah. We certainly know of siblings that did not get in. If a sibling doesn't get in they call you rather than just getting it in a letter.

willow · 29/12/2010 21:35

Think it is probably down to simple maths - only half as many places at KGS for boys as there are at Hampton?

RatherBeOnTheMulledWine · 29/12/2010 21:51

I think Hampton is a much bigger school too? KGS is about 800, i think Hampton is 1200+. But I might be making that bit up.

scrabble66 · 03/01/2011 20:30

DS's test on Friday so we'll see how he gets on... but imagine you're right and it comes down to basic economics - if it's a co-ed chances are your DC will have chances cut in half. I guess CLFS (City of London Freemans is out of the way for a lot of South Londoners but have been wondering about there too...

Have you looked at Emanuel as a back-up. I know there are mixed reports but when we looked it seemed to have a big emphasis on the creative side of things.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 08/01/2011 23:12

Scrabble - how did the test go yesterday?

scrabble66 · 09/01/2011 16:45

DS was quite up for it. He did well on the English and reasoning apparently but didn't manage to finish the Maths paper :{ DH who dropped off said that there were apparently about 70 boys and 30 girls sitting the test. Yet their mix in year 7 always seems to be about 50:50... It would seem to me that boys are at a bit of a disadvantage as so many of us want girls' school for DDs and
co-eds for DSs - the sums of which just don't add up!
Thanks re Emanuel idea - this has been mentioned and may give it a visit.

Dint know about 10+ but feedback for 11+ this year was that KGS was easier exam than Hampton.

stillfeel18inside · 10/01/2011 10:28

scrabble66 - that's a bummer about the huge number of boys taking the 10+ - did your DH hear that from a teacher or just guesswork? Also do you know when we hear about results? Forgot to ask!

scrabble66 · 10/01/2011 12:25

The 70:30 ratio was an estimation from DH who saw the 100 children gather in the hall. Think we should hear by end Jan if an interview has been offered.

anyone hear anything either way regarding 10+

thanksalot · 17/01/2011 11:25

We've not heard any news yet about 10+ results. Any idea when we'll find out if invited to interview?

stillfeel18inside · 17/01/2011 11:59

We haven't heard yet but no post yet - have you had today's post?

scrabble66 · 17/01/2011 12:10

please let us know on this forum if you hear today

OP posts:
thanksalot · 17/01/2011 12:11

Yes, had today's post but no news!

stillfeel18inside · 17/01/2011 13:26

Nothing in today's post - who's brave enough to call and find out when they're sending them out?!

thanksalot · 17/01/2011 13:37

SF18 - you sound brave enough to call!

stillfeel18inside · 17/01/2011 13:53

No I'm a complete wuss!

thanksalot · 17/01/2011 13:53

That's a shame, me too!
